This Fine record from Wigan Casino days, is for auction at the moment on ebay and going for strong money. Item 351142499733

 

I was a little bit sad to see she had autographed it with these words - TO VIKKI MY ONE AND ONLY FAN, JUDY HUGHES

 

She made this great record and it looks like only one person cared at the time!  Frustrating when I think of all those pop people earning millions for making trash!

 

At least the Northern Soul scene rescued it from obscurity!

strange case, this record. Great track, at least one tv appearance, decent size label....why a flop and so rare?

when you think of the utter shite in a similar vein that hit in the 60s, it's really strange and tragic that this didnt. She looked the part too.

proof, if any were needed, that the measure of musical quality, even with pop music like this, is not success or contemporary popularity.

Being a builder and over 35, I listen to radio 2 at work - some of the crap that's played to this day just because it got to number 7 in 1976 or whatever is shameful, especially as it's at the expense of stuff like this.

but it vindicates a life of hunting obscure records.

First heard this on a Kent CD about 20 years ago and loved it immediately. Reminded me of "Liar Liar" by The Castaways. Being before the days of price guides and the internet, I phoned Mr Manship to enquire about the record's attainability - and was immediately worried by the sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. Sometimes things I asked about might be a ten or twenty quid. But not in this case.

 

It WAS on Richard Domar's list for £500 for a while, an amount of money I couldn't even conceive of spending on a record. In hindsight, was probably a bargain...

You've lost me there mate. It went for £1300 ($2170) and I bid £1198 ($2000) but as usual with eBay we have no idea what amount the winner actually put on it. Could have been £2K.

 

I'm thinking of changing my eBay name to secondhighbidder, I was outbid on the Little Nicky Soul last night too.  :dash2:

This is a strange record for me , I bought mine for a heartstoppingly cheep price around thirty years ago , was really mad on this for years and when I bought it I played it a few times then very quickly got fed up with it. It lay in my garage for a few years and then got it out again to play at six hills nighter, then decided that I didn't like it but kept it in my oldies box for the odd spin. last year I was offered a lot for it and I thought why not i'll get shut and buy some thing else ( like a dictionary ) but I just couldn't sell it , I was like Gollum with the ring , my head said " take the dough you twat " but my heart said no this is a very similar situation with Sue Lynn as mentioned in another thread earlier , not great but just can't let go. It's a strange situation with records like this; if you're a record collector or dj you're generally going to specialise in a genre that you think is where music peaked. If you're a soul or r&b collector, it seems reasonable to pay big money for an archetype of the genre - such records on top of being popular in clubs or on scenes feel culturally and historically important, so in a sense you're getting a lot for your money.

with this, great as I think it is, it's a throwaway type pop record, and outside of northern soul and mod dj circles, does it have any significance?

I love a good tune more than anything, but looking at it as an investment, as you have to now when big records seem to be priced in increments of £500, you'd probably do better buying tuneless and inept but ' culturally important' private label funk and soul than perfect pop like this.

Come on, if you are going to start picking people up on grammatical errors we are going to be in for some blinding threads.

If you must know I was on my phone and I struggle to even see the screen these days and my fat fingers don't help either.

 

Anyway, I love the record, and I'm sure one went for £2k a couple of years ago.  :P

Northern Soul is not a deep soul scene! It's based on dance floor reaction and that's why it can't be controlled!

One of things that's good about it is the great variation in styles of music it covers, even if some of those records are catchy, if that what you mean by pop!

Thank goodness it's not controlled by a lot of deep/modern soul chinstrokers!!

I like soul, I like pop, and I like poppy soul...I prefer that to deep soul or slow soul - I don't know if everyone's been following the Low Rider Scene thread but the music on there is amongst the most boring I've ever heard, I couldn't take more than 10 minutes of it that dirgy ballad crap.   Anyway one of my all time favourite records is by a white pop singer, Joanie Sommers..

Seriously catchy tune, if someone wants to pay big money their choice.

If that wasn't known on the northern scene and I heard Brian Matthews play it and inform me it got to number 55 in 1966 or whenever. I'd happily cough up £20 - 30 for it. But it is known on the scene and therefore commands more, which means I can' t afford a good pop record.

At last we agree on something Phil Holly St James is total pants come on lets be hearing it for Jackie Trent and Muriel Day!

Just so that I don't get branded a sexist bigot I just like to point out that some male records are bad like with or without any 'dimples' the Salvadors.

Always loved it as a rare oldie from the casino, but subsequently due to it's rarity, seldom played out nowadays !

Seem to recall an autographed copy on evil bay last year accompanied by autographs and press release photos to promote the release at the time, nice tidy bundle, but our American friends are now found in a corner nowadays clutching a copy of Manship's latest pricing guide and it was'nt cheap by any means and that was before bidding began !!

Sorry but I posted the comment based on an outbid notification but on reflection, someone has done very well to secure this rarity. Don't recall seeing one for sale so maybe it's a 3 thousand dollar record in mint condition and the thousand pound tag dating back ten years is now an irrelevancy. Hope you find an equally rare but good sounding record to drop your savings on...

you`ve  all forgotten this was on JMs auction only a few months ago..went for £2300.... all the records mentioned in this thread are  60`s white girly pop records..no soul content at all..and there probably was never meant to be any.. some decent records tho nonetheless.....i dont see a great record mentioned imo..just because it packs a dance floor.....lets face it the hokey cokey would pack a dance floor at some venues

Regardless of whether it's a good record or even if it's northern etc... I don't think we should be surprised it wasn't widely received at the time. She was producing  this when The Moody Blues were releasing Go Now and The Yardbirds - For Your Love and Marvin Gaye - How Sweet it is, etc...

 

I think we forget that the quality of most releases in the pop charts at that time was a million miles ahead of this record.

makes u wonder somehow, 1.  if a artist gets some air time on television surely she must have had some kinda name already (all the other artists were established and widely known acts of the time) plus 2.  the company will have had already made sure  that there will be enough copies at distributors and shops to meet demand created by the telly appearance. it sure wasnt released in any of the so often quoted 250, 500 copies only runs...  

 

I am sure there either  has been huge quantity of this record been dumped ages ago already or there is still quantity of this tune lurking somewhere waiting to be found..
