Never realised Tommy Ridgely was Wigan spin for Searling.  Always thought it was John Vincent and few years later.

That's what I love about lists like this, it challenges the memories. For whatever reason I didn't have Al Williams down as 79.

Thanks for posting Pete, agree with the great set comments, he was King for a long time in my opinion.

I'd stopped going by then but I can appreciate a great set of records when I hear one, nearly all 'newies' as well

I remember hearing John play it at Clifton Hall and saying Richard had played it a few years before. While he was on one of his "retirements" !

What a great set! I reckon I was probably there, I was a regular around that time. Any chance you could download this to Mixcloud?

Im sure it would be much enjoyed and greatly appreciated by a great many soul fans.

Normally yes - this time no - I've given away over 40 nighter tapes on Mixcloud (including another one today) and elsewhere so I'm going to keep a few back, or charge for them, because every time I do any, people start selling them on bloody ebay!

I don't understand stuff like mixcloud and the like but would be willing to pay for a copy on a cd Pete - summat for the car. What's a fair price.

Whats the sound quality like?

Well, that's a shame Pete, especially for us lot that just love to hear these things and for whom not everything in life revolves around $$$.......see my note on another thread about people knowing the price of everything but the value of nothing. .......case rested! :-(

How did you get on with the Ric Tic recording?

Cheers,

I'll put it as a digital download on my website for £4.99 and if anyone does actually download it, I'll do you another one free of charge which I'll sort out after that.  I feel guilty about charging but honestly, if you look at youtube for instance, 90% of the Wigan tapes on there are mine, uncredited.  And when I see people selling them on ebay, after I've given them away for free, gets me a bit angry.
Anyone interested, let me know here on this thread and I'll send you the details when I have them, be tomorrow morning I should think.

I had to redo it because I forgot to press the start button, but I've done it now, I'll organise getting it to you but do us a favour and keep it to yourself because I don't think I'm going to make this one public.

Fantastic playlist

i wasn't at that night, however as a regular at Clouds all-nighters in Edinburgh around the same time, I vividly recall dancing to the majority of these when RIchard graced the Clouds decks - amazing set of what were just known as "newies" at that time

i was lucky enough to live in the same village to an up and coming DJ at the time called Ian Martin (R iP), who was buying things like Al Williams, The Agents, Cecil Washington at the time - remember going to his house every Thursday night and being treated to these - what a great apprenticeship it was - I was only bloody 14!!!!!!

great times and some of these tunes have obviously stood the test of time

excellent stuff Pete

awesome playlist pete...richard at his iconic best....i think we all dream that times like this could be had again...but a good many of you out there, lived that particular moment and can never have it taken away from you...it's possible to actually feel the atmosphere just reading the depth of the quality....a northern soul set to bring you to your senses amidst the banal pop infiltration and media attention, when truly inspirational soul music endured and shook you to your foundations. richard always believed in the truth, giving people the real deal, those latest discoveries, always moving forward, the quest never to rely on tried and tested oldies...he was always ahead of the field..and still knows how to do it now..

Great post Pete. Awesome playlist. After my time at The Casino so obviously missed out although many of the tracks soon became familiar on Grapevine and other LP's. Most of these tracks have not only stood the test of time, they number some of the very best and rarest records on the scene. Richard was often perceived to play second fiddle to Russ but this listing shows he was right at the top of the tree.

That is some playlist ! Bearing in mind they were newies of the day. Awesome

Remember fellas that 'Newies' back then meant something totally different to what it means now! Solid 60's all the way and not a Mecca-Ritz 'newie' in sight.

More crap Pop tunes from that old Disco on Station Rd you're forcing me to go and listen to again Pete......

Even after 35 years those first few bars of Cecil Washington still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up....... a truly awesome tune.

Thanks for posting Pete.

It is a truly awesome tune, but I've said it before, it was played out a long long time before 1979.

More like 73/74 by Pep or Blue max.

I'd be happy to pay for it Pete. Please let me know how. You are absolutely spot on about the bandits flogging recycled stuff you have posted for free.

I understand your frustration but hope you know how much people on here appreciate you making stuff available to us. Much as I enjoy your podcasts, the wigan tapes just blow me away every time.  :hatsoff2:

Cheers

John

sorry bro, i'll have to dispute that....i went to the catacombs during that era, and i never heard it,...definitely not on a wednesday night and as for saturday's?, no chance....yes it was for the rarer stuff but if it had been in either dj's boxes at that time....we would all have heard of it long before wigan.

Er i think we can & do, we are off to Barcelona in dec to catch Butch, who can still deliver with a mighty blow some of the greatest records ever played

..and it's good to hear it, sir arthur, the fact is, good sets can still be heard all over the country and the quality of the rarities haven't diminished....it remains however, a fact that when a breath of fresh air was needed amongst the choking smog of pop with a 4's beat, richard restored the balance and the sanity, reminding people what northern soul stood for. i'm sure you, along with butch, adey, sam and a whole other bunch of devotees, will keep the fires burning for years to come.

Nah. I thought Richard had the only copy at that point? I'm sure if Pep or Max had it, we'd have heard about it before surely? I knew most of what Pep had up to '75'cos he had a few I really wanted.........

That's an awesome Richard set innit?

that set list brings the memories flooding back . 79 - 81 at the casino . THE BOMB !  my first real nightclub experience as a fourteen year old [ not including the golden garter in wythenshawe . soup in a basket and tony christie. ]  one hell of a soul education  . richard was just unbelievable  and very well supported by sam and pat brady.  i had a saturday job on the market , so could only afford to go fortnightly[ if factoring in a couple of tunes ]  and there were always new tunes added to the playlist that i missed on the weeks i couldnt go. remember walking into the record bar a fair few times asking for one of  mr searlings latest monster tunes  only to be told by the likes of tim ashibende , thats not the artists real name and probably not the correct title.still love so many of those records even the ones that didnt make it big time . my mate always used to request  the old man  - the two of us , and alex taylor - slowly turning to love , not the best records ever in soul terms but they just seemed to fit in. and choons like king tutt - youve got me hung up and  jewel - paradise . i remember  mike shaft loving that when richard played it during his three record spot on mikes radio show. richard seemed to stay clear of a lot of the politics and just play the very best 60s newies  and new release 70s soul .  i know its unlikely but i'd love to see richard and russ  double decking playing tunes from just the last couple of years of the  casino . never say never .  before we end up in that care home it just could be coming to a venue near you  !

o.k  john anderson was a great supply line for richard  and of course soul sam  and pat brady  too. but this in no way diminishes richards  credibility for me . and lets not forget the deal worked both ways . john supplied  the big  d.js with these records knowing a massive demand would be created . great advertising for soul bowl. it didnt have to be one off dog rare items . if the quality is there , rare as rocking horse shit  or cheap as chips  richard will play it. top of the pile for me.
