This post takes me back to one of my first DJ sets in Japan. ... -i.e. Sam Fletcher, Roy Hamilton, Lou Johnson et al. However, before I played them it was pointed out within a discussion that generally these artists/discs were not liked by Japanese Soul fans at all! ...  more "Pop" than Soul...strings and big productions do not tick the Soul boxes.

... makes one realise that an awful lot of Northern Soul discs are not super Soulful...and I'm not just talking about the Blue-eyed stuff...not that I have a problem with that in the slightest!

:g:

I do get your point here Dave. But Sam Fletcher 'I'd think it over' is soulful as it get. Now if they are not to appreciate those big strings production is another matter. And indeed, a lot of northern soul played and still playing are not soulful. And a lot were and still are. I do have a problem with my records not being soulful. Well even if I have to admit that like many I do have my "guilty secrets" records gathered on the "dark-er side" of record collecting/discovering/crate digging. So I like Lou Johnson but I understand one would not like him. Roy Hamilton is not my cup of tea so... But that Sam Fletcher can be called "overplayed/heard" or not to one's taste, but not Soulful; not IMHO !

I remember a guy telling me that he went to Soul Bowl ,and John had more Eddie Parker's than Billy Sha Rae ,so ended up buying Billy's version .....I guess John at Soul Bowl would be the man to ask ,perhaps it was in general ,a one box find ? You don't hear of many copies being found out in the wild .Though Jack Ashford himself has provided a small amount .

Only went to the Torch once, and boy was I lucky, the sounds from there went on to be staple plays at the Casino and other venues. Great times, but 45 years ago..., now I feel old. Records imprinted on my mind from that one night include many of those on the tape from 1972 plus, The Tempos, The Younghearts, Dottie Cambidge, Danny White, The Isley Brothers ( tell me it is just a rumour), George Carrow, Chubby Checker (you just don't know) etc. Remember sitting behind the DJ decks watching Martyn Ellis in full flight (the most entertaining NS DJ of all time)

Back on topic, Eddie Parker is great for me there is nowt wrong with Billy Raes version either. I still reckon there a way more copies of Eddie Parker than we think, cos no one will sell it😀

Eddie Parker is as good as it gets Northern Soul!

we were at Springfield and someone said there was loads of copies, we tried to count what we knew and we didn't get far.

that was myself you and Andy Dyson and I seem to remember we got to around 20 ish separate copies not copies that have been shared around.

so in essence, not insanely rare considering the price tag, but it's real deal grab ya by the bollocks northern.

Edited accordingly!

Also.....Not sure on listening again I don`t think it was Guy Darrell`s version of HURT. There are a few part records like Clara Ward, First Choice  and some instrumental of Uptight which I skipped over. How good is it to hear Martin and Jebby back behind those decks!!! :hatsoff2:

And me too....I didn't think we got past ten with a name to them.  I know there's several down under and Japan.

If John got 50, in the grand scheme if things it is bloody rare.  It is wanted by more than just Northern collectors so will always be top dollar.
