Radio 2 - Out On The Floor - 1/1/15

Recommended Posts

Nowt wrong with Sharleen, she often mentions Northern Soul when asked about her musical influences.

In fact, in response to the original post, I googled her, saw she was on tour and now have 2 tix for her Southend gig, which looks well on the way to selling out.

Mind you, I reckon DILY is still a fair bet to be broadcast all the same......

Very sorry, must be on the wrong site, thought it was called soulsource. Could go on all night about dance music with an influence. I remember dave evison playing' heatache avenue' by whoever it was at wigan. awefull. Just dont think this site is the correct place for music like that.

Didn't mention soul, I said northern. You can hear the influence.

We were discussing Sharleen Spiteri, and her love of Northern Soul. She is the lead singer in the group Texas.

Heartache Avenue, definitely has a northern influence. Though I would never play it at an allnighter.

I won't be listening, but I hope those that do are pleasantly surprised.  It doesn't always have to be hackneyed or clichéd, and with the film soundtrack available there might be a good two hours of entertainment from the girl.  I always think the BBC should make an effort to entertain their audience more considering they've coined it in from most families for years with their license scam, but feel that when they can employ people like the bumhole that is Moyles they have an agenda that runs deep alongside the commercially viable so called popular music genre, so aren't that interested in an underground scene that relies on an OVO policy that some of their cronies can't make money out of, or am I just in my post Christmas hate the world mode still?

Memory is a funny thing. "Heartache Avenue" wasn't released until 1982, well past the closing of The Casino. :g:

From the trailer its going to be the predictable stuff, tainted love, long after the night is all over etc etc

Now this is embarrassing, I'd never heard of Sharleen Spiteri before reading this thread. Just listening to When We Are Together on YouTube. Not a bad record, like many there is a soul influence, wouldn't buy it but don't hate it. If I remember, and am in a fit state after doing a nighter, I'll listen and hope to be pleasantly surprised. I live in hope.

........ so someone who isn't that knowledgeable about the music is going to doubtless play a few of the same old cheesy 'Northern Soul' records....

Clearly Radio 2 has done it's research on the scene and is giving people exactly what they want.

Actually I find Craig pretty knowledgeable. He's undoubtedly enthusiastic, knows his 70s mainstream soul very well and loves and respects the music. I think his DJ voice is Ok and a necessary bit of showbiz for a national show. I think his show is meant to be mainstream as opposed to the Northern ones which are by definition specialist. Sharleen frequently came down the 100 club in the 90s, let's hope the show reflects this with an hour of beat ballads!

i met him and found him a nice enough guy didnt think he was particularly knowledgeable though. The dj voice isnt neccesary though, but each to their own .

Agreed not particularly, but pretty! I doubt he'd know much about the Hopkins Brothers but probably has a good grasp on Kool & The Gang, Marvin, Fatback Band, Patrice Rushen etc. I don't like the celeb presenters idea much either but if we do have to have them which seems to be the case, I'd rather have ones that enjoy and have experienced the music rather than Stuart Maconie (who I actually like as a presenter) but don't see the point of him doing a Northern show because he came from Wigan. Someone correct me if I'm wrong and he was a fan at some stage.

Yep, I forgot to mention he's a working DJ so knows what the public at his dances want at least.

The youngsters/students etc lapped him up so to speak.  Whether his celebrity status was having that effect or the music and his DJing skills not sure but he had the place rockin.  Pretty sure any half decent DJ would have done the same though after following on from Lee Fields.

A guy I used to know, Andy Vaughan, who came from Ince just outside of Wigan was a big Wigan Athletics fan, and along with co-creating and contributing to The Mudhutter Latics fanzine/website, he's started writing books.

One of his first that he co-authored was Pies and Prejudice in 2005, and he doesn't have many kind words to say about Stuart Maconie, who some of you will know had a book published with that same title in 2007.

Just googled him to check back and I've seen he has a new book out called Faded Lois Dreams.

Also when she sang the duet on Private Number with William Bell at the Ace 25th Anniversary, she put back promo on Texas' Greatest Hits album so that he could join her on Jools Holland a couple of weeks later.

As to Craig he really does love soul and funk, and the guys who help him select the music really know their stuff.

He's the most popular show on Radio Six, and the option doesn't seem to be between Craig and someone else, but Craig and no-one.

A bit off topic but sort of related

I was listening to Bette Midler on a show on Radio 6...really liked what she was playing...not northern or anything like that but a really good show...then she dropped in  The Andantes  Like A Nightmare....nearly dropped me glass of Pinot   !!!
