Guest Juniorsoul

Rafa Club 6th December 2014 — Special guest  DJ’s John Parker — (York soul club) and Davy Mason (Gateshead)

This the last soul night at the Rafa club in 2014 and what better way to end the year than with 2 fantastic rare soul dj’s in John and Davy. We were so pleased that John and Davy could make it and it’s John’s 3rd appearance in the last 2 years which is testament to our faith in him delivering the goods as a rare northern soul DJ. John and wife Carol arrived really early (approx 7.30pm) and a Carol was first up on the floor to Ian’s set (Spiedels and Bob & Fred) which set the tone for the night. A good crowd supporting John and Davy with people from as far as Clitheroe and Burnley plus the usual soul fans from Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe. Ian Shoulder first up on the decks with :

Absolutely fabulous set from Davy Mason and as usual he delivers the goods playing only the best and some superb rare UK copies / 45's too. Lots of his set is on the free cd which in mind was one of the best cd's I've done this year, John Parker adding to the cd made it a joy to listen too.

John Parker up next (what a fellah — comes all the way from Beverley to play at our humble club, great bloke, record collector, dj and his missus is a good sort too!!!!)

J D Bryant — I won’t be coming back — Shrine (one of the best from the Shrine logo and as rare as they come — you lot are spoilt at the Rafa Club...........)

Shirley Edwards — Dream my heart — Shrine (ditto above)

Nat Hall — Why — Loop — (both versions in one night......)

Magnetics — Count the days — Sable (ditto above .... spoilt again)

Buddy Ace — Screamin’ please — Duke (Big at the Rafa at the moment)

Joe Jama — It’s my life — Optimum (Like it or not it’s one of the most infectious plays on the Northern dance floors. Henry Atkinson’s discovery featured in the first DJ sets some 15 years since, when it was cheekily covered up as “Little Henry”. )

George Lemons — Fascinating girl — Gold Soul

John & the Wierdest — Can’ get over these memories — Tie (Old Searling c/up as Spyder Turner and the Webs....)

John and the Wierdest — No time — Tie (in my humble opinion the best side and I stick my head above the parapet for you all to shoot at it, and I bet you’ll miss...... again a monster double sider, truly spoilt Rafa club goers....)

It was getting late and to give John a rest we had Paul Ackley finish off but John was having none of it so they double decked ‘till the end of the night, both dj’s playing off one another to perfection, each the perfect foil for each other ...... Guess who played what, answers on a post card to me and you get a free entrance to the club in February 2015)

Fantastic night, music to feed the soul!!!!!!!!,good to catch up with old friends and given a very warm welcome from new one's well worth the two hour journey, cant wait for Feb 15 to do it all again.

Thanks to all concerned.

Geoff and Margaret Buckley

Shame to have missed you Geoff as I was out on my works bash.

Must say though, we are a bit spoiled at the RAFA as the playlists consistently prove :)

Excellent playlists as usual, always delivers, well done to all.

Thanks Dave, and as you say York soul club delivers exactly the same as the Rafa soul club so let's all support it more. We all need your support to keep this scene alive, remember today's new plays become tomorrow's oldies, it,s always been that way and it,s all soul anyway. Many thanks to John and Carol for the visit, the dedication, effort and love of the music.

see you all in 2015! Regards Paul.
