 Is any one going to The Ocean Night Club, this Saturday13th, and has anyone got any information.

We are traveling up from London and are wondering if there are going to be any friendly faces there, but still looking forward to seeing the Flirtations live on stage.

Hi Soulie64,

The venue is a night club so i would think it will attract that type of patron, that said i hope they get a large crowd because the Flirt's put on a good show and i would suggest your journey to Nottingham would be well worth it.

Spoke to Steve Whittle this afternoon and he reported a crowd of around 400 in on the opening night, he went on to say the crowd seemed to know their stuff and the Flirtations did a good set.

400 IS ABSOLUTE BOLLOCKS FOR A VENUE THAT HOLDS 1,600 AND HAS JUST SPENT A FORTUNE HYPING IT.

WE KNOW WHERE THE REAL CROWDS WERE....AS PER USUAL.

Kev,

I was led to believe that a brewery chain was behind this event, and I am out and about most weekends and I have not heard a barman/pub-club manager 'dissing' your events.

I must say I find it rather sad that you get enjoyment from news that a new venue only had 400 in, I thought the scene was about Togetherness

Promoters who constantly disrespect us as a business ultimately lose out. That's why we have been around for 32 years. The useless hype surrounding this particular event from the organisers(not the venue) tells its own story.

Togetherness.......yeah...we had 2,000 in at Fleetwood.

Hi Kev,

I didn't go to either event, so can't comment on what they were like. Although I had a number of friends go to Fleetwood and heard nothing but good things.

My reason for replying to you, and forgive me as I'm not a big promoter or a DJ, but is the be-all and end-all the number of feet you get through a door?

I've had some of the best nights of my life when there's been less than 100 people there in a tight little venue. To me Kev, it's about having some wonderful people around you and the music to match. If you get the mixture right, you can't beat it.

I've been to Whitby for the last 2 years, and had a fantastic weekend on both occasions. It was well organised, some terrific DJ's and a great atmosphere. But I've had just a good night on a personal level when I've been at a smaller club.

I respect what you do and what you to try to provide for a certain market. I just wish all you promoters could be a bit more humble and self-effacing. Sometimes it does come across as arrogance. I don't think it would harm to compliment other promoters, and just because they 'slag-off' your events doesn't make it right to call another event 'absolute b*llocks' because they only got 400 throught the door.

I don't know how you think, but personally I would have thought your silence would have spoke loudly enough about your success at Fleetwood. Afterall, your events are undoubtedly very successful, but do you need to go to the same level and fire pot-shots back at other events?

We are all grown-ups now aren't we??

All the best,

Jamie :P

Jamie,

You are bob-on. Sadly less experienced promoters revel in 'mischief making'. I have merely let them know(one of which is a member) that 'what goes around, comes around'.

The sniping promoters and a few useless disciples that hang onto them to 'hopefully' get a DJ gig are the real problem.

As for us, we will carry on giving value for money and treating our supporters with the utmost respect. As for the usual 'chinese whispers' from rival promoters who constantly try and rattle our cage, my message is clear -WE'LL BE THE LAST TO TURN OUT THE LIGHTS'

Reading your response it is obvious that it's very deep-seated and would guess it goes back a number of years.

For those of you who know all the reasons behind it, then I'm sure you will all feel justified in your actions.

But for someone on the outside looking in, it all seems a bit daft 'My clubs bigger than your club ner ner ner ner ner'

And these are all people who as a young lad growing up, I thought of as 'Hero's' of mine.

It's all a bit weird when you grow up and see people carrying-on like I did when I was at school.

So, it doesn't give us any hope of a 'Kiss & Make-Up' meeting does it???

Shame for the scene really.....

There are some pretty distasteful promoters out there. They know who they are. Let's leave it that.

As for just regular collectors, customers, nice people and the majority of this site

I personally have nothing but respect for them.

In the words of the Detroit Executives, I am now going to 'Cool Off'

When it seems that every other post no matter what the thread, is answered by roberts telling us how many punters that this or that venue had in, or attacking other venues

"400 IS ABSOLUTE BOLLOCKS / 400 is the best news I've heard all week!"

(Yes very together kev), you have to wonder whether there is any site you can go on to get away from him?

When asked whether certain artists featured on goldmine cds received royalties he hides behind

"I cannot comment too much on Goldmine as I have a confidentiality agreement in place".

What does he contribute to this site other than self promotion?

Lets be sensible about this, the more people that post complaining (me included) the

more he will respond because in this way he is generating the publicity he is seeking.

Mike/Kolla kick him off ! Alternatively everybody totally ignore his posts, although I guess there will always be the sycophants who will feed his ego & fill his clubs. Your choice, line his pockets as that seems to be what is dearest to his heart.

I didn't go to Fleetwood but 2000 people did - are they all Kev Roberts' sycophants then? What about all the people who cram into the Kings Hall - it's a fantastic night, even I go now and again. Giving the people what they want isn't a crime, neither is self publicity, we all have to make a living and if it is a crime then I'm guilty of posting my record lists on here trying to get people to buy things off me.

"Kick him off" - why? Cos you don't like him?

I don't like the trail of memorabilia and cash-ins that go with some of the Togetherness do's e.g. drinking mugs, t shirts, whatever, but there's obviously a market for them, as there is for limited edition of prints of Wigan Casino or perspex-mounted soul badges.

I take people as I find them, I've never had anything but successful transactions with the person in question and I trust him.

No Pete giving the people what they want isn't a crime & possibly I went a bit over the top, but answering so many different posts with replies that simply amount to hijacking the thread to publicise his own venues is only going to antagonise people & he knows it. Nothing wrong in advertising/publicity but all the time on & on & on & on & on & on &on....................?

I don't know him apart from his using my name in his top 500 book with a quote attached that most certainly didn't come from me so I personally wouldn't trust him, as for not liking him I don't like the way he conducts himself on this site , simple as that.

I for one dont want it, I come on here for some general info on whats going on on the scene and to try and learn about records I havent heard before etc

If youve got the bollocks answer me this question truthfully ( just a simple yes or no - nothing else, no politicians answers )

Would you have any involvement in the scene if you didnt make any money from it? ie would you promote a venue purely for the love of it?

I normally keep my opinions to myself but felt I had to say something this time.

Everybody to their own Kev , you don't know me & so you can't comment on my particular musical leanings. I have nothing against your venues or the people who attend , I have myself been to Stoke & it wasn't for me. Why should I want to travel there to hear tunes that I've been listening to for 25/30 years. Friends of mine do make the occasional journey up & they have a good time. Personally I'd rather stay in the South & choose my venues such as 100 Club to suit my taste. You describe me as "a typical disciple of 'follow anything and anybody' providing it aint popular", as I said you don't know me but why attend a venue just because it's popular. I don't follow anything because "it ain't popular" but I do support venues that will play something other than the same old same old over & over again.

The whole point of all this is your continued rantings about how great your venues are compared with anywhere else & constant hijacking of any thread to publicise these venues. Don't you have your own website that promotes your events & if so

why do you constantly come on here to annoy all & sundry. Surely anybody who was interested in your nights would go to your website?

"Right on keep the faith" LOL when did anybody say that ?

Considering I used to line up outside the Torch in 1972, I'd say I have every right to love Northern Soul and be in business with it. PAID MY DUES!

This is a good point and it's one of the reasons I don't really go out anymore, but a couple of times a year I do and to be honest, I think we all go to venues for certain things - last time I went to Stoke I was chatting til gone 4am and have no idea what was played before then - so it's more social for me really. Gone are the days when I'd travel miles just because one person played one particular record. I went to one of the rarest of the rare nights at the Ritz a couple of years back and that was really good. But at 44, I have maybe 10% of the entusiasm I had when I was 16, so thats why I choose Stoke I suppose - for the crack rather than the music.

I think that you've more than had your dues back Kev, but so what, your in business, but you constantly wind people up and maybe you should think about some of the sentiments being expressed, or is it the ego thing, which seems to be much more important to some people including more than a few DJ's, that keeps you coming back to the site. Your plugging of events etc might be more acceptable if you side stepped the more difficult questions less often. I for one joined this site to learn more about soul music and to find out about records I've missed. With your knowledge, a bit more clarity on certain happenings in both the distant and recent past might change some peolples perspective :P

Feel I have to enter into this.

Got back from Fleetwood Monday morning and got a call later from some friends who went to Notts do. They said it was a poor night, very expensive and they wont be going again. They said that the quality was poor but then again Steve Rouse has never (unlike some) made any pretense to be in it for anything but the money.

I did have a good time at Fleetwood but having done all 3 for the last few years it still trails behind Prestatyn and Cleethorpes IMHO. I cant comment on the others as I have not done them.

Being with my mates and having loads of beer always helps to have a good time but I wasnt to drunk to miss what was going on. The music in the Northern room was generally poor with the same tunes being played over and over with noone willingto play anything different. The 2 best spots of the weekend - Soul Sam and Keith Money (brilliant) were played in afternoon sessions to fairly empty dancefloors. The rest were mediocre which forced me (to much ridicule) up to the modern room where I heard some great tunes from people that were'nt afraid to mix it up.

When I'm at the other weekenders I am often asked by people involved in the organising if I'm having a good time? I've never been asked that at Fleetwood even though I've known the promotors for more than 30 years!!

Says a lot !!

Its tough saying 'thanks' to every customer when you are dealing with huge crowds, management, security, artists etc. But from me..THANKS.

As for the music policy...I have said it a million times, you cannot play obscure or unfamiliar tracks in such a large room, they don't fill the floor and our customers are king in my book.

Kenny and Keith as usual were terrific....to a luke warm floor on Sunday at 5pm.

If you were in the room at 7 for the Charity Raffle before I kick started the 'oldies party', I deliberately played a set including See Saw-Don Covay, Sam and Kitty, Ed Crook. Answer---very little response to what I consider to be evergreens.

The majority today know less than 500 tunes. And at prime time in a big room you are going to get repeats. 1. iT HAPPENS EVERYWHERE OF A SIMILAR SIZE and 2. THE CUSTOMER HAS THE RIGHT TO KEEP ASKING FOR THEM OVER AND OVER AGAIN. They are not my choices!

On lets say a Saturday at 2am, Kenny, Keith, Ginger even Butch would have to reach for 'old reliables'- if they don't the floor will dissapear.

People like yourself hate that type of thinking. But you like many of us are overly passionate about NS. The rest are wallowing in nostalgia and looking for a feel good factor.

I would dearly love to receive radio requests demanding a bigger variety, but it does not happen. The norm is can you play Harold Melvin-Get Out for John who's 50 today or Ruby Andrews-Just Lovin You for our Silver Wedding Anniversary.

The very same people are not in chat rooms or even read mags, they may only go out to Weekenders and avoid Soul nights...who knows?

We cannot stop nostalgia. The Northern scene has peaked musically(sorry to be the bearer of bad news), however other growth areas are emerging.

Never the answers passionate folk really want.

Now i'm not gonna get into this i'm really not, look please just stop all this, it's not funny anymore, the fact is that there is bad blood out there between certain people on this scene, i just wish instead of all this pussy footing around you would all just step up to the plate , wise up and get it on! don't keep fucking about on here it's boring, if this is all about power, money, greed and worse control then perhaps we are coming to an end as a scene.

I don't agree with some of Kev's points we both know that but we are really getting no place with this.

It's all getting a wee bit personal in my book and you should all stop it now.

If it has turned into the majority of people only knowing and wanting 500 tunes....the what the f*** are we doing this for?????
