The Orchids - Kool Kat was a definite "true" rumour, along with it's upcoming release on Grapevine!!

Thanks for confirming. We didn't have anything like the knowledge then that we have now.

Interesting stories,  great stuff !

I'm not sure if i went to a different venue,   during those later days,  judging by the 'empty' comments?    I went xmas 79 (heard 'what christmas means to me' - Stevie Wonder🤨),   at the time when RS was on fire! I remember Rushbrooke playing Trade Martin,  so some of my faculties havent left me.  there were  Some fabulous records played that night......I Also attended two Oldies anniversaries and the 7th Anniv.      All 4 times i went, it was rammed

Considering im very 'oldies' oriented ,    The stand out record for me at any of my visits, was  'Anything i can do'   Will Collins,    I've never seen a dancefloor bounce like that, EVER !

Hmmm, must have got that tit-bit from someone, but can't remember who now, presumably some collector at the time, and God knows what the "Delgado c/u" was….must have mis-heard Richard on the mic.

Hi Steve I heard that rumour from Chris fletcher from Notts who used to publish the soul source magazine

The latter years of the casino were definitely a sad time , the appreciation for new sounds had dwindled   due to the oldies nights but this paved the way for better things.  Stafford ,100club and more recently lifeline picking up the mantle .but allas, the days of a big 1000plus nighter ever playing new discoveries to the masses  is long gone. Certain promoters  and multi room venues have not helped the cause.  So forward and onward upfront venues may be smaller .but unlike the masses we are not sheep.my memories of the latter years of the casino are great the tunes we heard are still some of the best to be put on vinyl

Brilliant post Steve as you said at bit younger at the time when you applied pen to paper, warrington was quiet (we used to go there from n.wales) and call into the pattern arms for a quickie before our train arrived for Wigan, because by this time we had transport weather it be car, scoot,or coach organised, musically it was great if you got there after russ and Keith with no disrespect to the later ,as you stated no question,no dancefloor activity you must of gone on a busy night during 1980 I with 3 others boxed yourself off in my Hillman imp and off we set to the famous dump on arrival shock horror call it what you want there was approximately 100 people I cant remember if they even bothered to open Ms that night we arrived about 3 am, I not being a lover of the oldies never enquired to it being opened or not ,I spent the majority of my time in the record bar talking to rod shard & Dave withers and theh were of the opinion they "were not gonna come again ",my personal feelings on this at what kept the cast club going were the once a month oldies which I only went to on the anniversaries and they were packed ,the second opinion which some may or not agree on is that the old school ( wheel ,torch ) got so cheesed off with it plus they were older just stopped going altogether, as I've said great post some brilliant comments ....if it hadn't been for Richard, pat I think it would of shut a lot earlier than it did ,we have the me ories good or bad and no one can take them away from us

I went from 76 till the final nighter (that wasnt) in 81 and virtually every week in 79, granted the monthly oldies were always really rammed, but honestly can never ever remember any saturday niter being "quiet, some more busier than other maybe but always an incredible atmosphere, bodies everywhere either on the balcony, in the back bar or crashed out on the floors and any regulars would,nt be any place else.. and as said Searling was spinning some really monster sounds at the time, only time i recall the dance floor thinning out was for about an hour or so between 5.30/6.30 am before the ressurgence began,...or maybe i was too blocked to notice
