Therefore, it's time for our second Soulcialism New Orleans benefit soul night up here in Pittsburgh, and once again we're compiling a giveaway CD of New Orleans soul music for attendees. My question to you overseas guardians of American soul music: What are some of your favorite New Orleans-affiliated northern records? Whether its NO-based artists, writers, producers, labels - whatever makes it somehow connected to the Crescent City? And... GO! One more Chance was written & arranged by a chap called Willie Tee... and arranged by New Orleans DJ Larry McKinley which also adds a lot to the NOLA credentials (IMO). On a sad note the New Orleans artist Barbara George died on August 10th, she hit locally and nationally with the self-penned "I Know (You Don't Love Me No More) on AFO, which got a UK release on London, another I rate is "Send For Me (If You Need Some Lovin') on Sue, seminal New Orleans soul, she also cut sides for Lana, Seven B and later Hep Me without much success. Can pick just about anything from Huey Piano Smith's catalogue of recordings and it's gonna be a winner. Love his "Little Liza Jane" as well. Garethx Posted August 23, 2006 Share Posted August 23, 2006 Dozens of fantastic records mentioned so far, from right across the entire spectrum of rare soul: heartfelt crooning ballads, blue-eyed stormers, midtempo sixties, rocking R&B, smooth 70s and ghetto funk (has nobody mentioned Ernie & The Topnotes' Dap Walk yet? to me the very best funk record ever made) and everything else in between. All goes to show that it would be more than possible to put on an entire allnighter of music just from NO without it being in any way samey or too generic. Last year we asked a minimum $2 donation for a CD, and raised over $500 for Tipitina's Foundation plus a smaller amount (which I've forgotten. damn.) for WWOZ the New Orleans jazz/soul/funk/etc. radio station. Hopefully we'll do just as well this time. All goes to show that it would be more than possible to put on an entire allnighter of music just from NO without it being in any way samey or too generic. Truly a soul city with the credentials to match any and surpass most. And you lot with the house-sized record collections should do so! Some of it was tempered by availability - some of these I had, some I acquired, some borrowed, a couple from CDs or MP3s. But I think it's a pretty sweet disc. Thank you all for the tips! It's a neat mid-to-uptempo number with a choppy beat and great, gritty singing... the other side is one of the great deep rarities: "I've Got To Get Away From You." I played IYNL in Manchester earlier in the summer and it seemed to go down ok. it was a record I thought I'd never own, but out of the blue Mr Manship found one for me. The deep flip was in demand in Japan and a few copies went there John said. I'd forgotten the name of the artist as I sold it in the mid eighties. Think this might be it. It is Gareth. just found out that JM has a soundfile on his site. It was covered as two different artists, , and ended up as Henry Jackson and the Bad Losers for some reason It was a joke name but I can't remember why.It was a yellow label. Do you know the value ? I had credit with John from a copy of Ellusions on Lamon which he auctioned and took the CJ in a straight swap. This was about four years ago. In the meantime I noticed with some interest that Sam had reviewed the 45 in his Manifesto column, but I've never heard him play it out, as I think he has a fair few more instant dancefloor smashes to call on before he has to resort to this! For what it's worth I think it's a really good double sider; the deep side is about as good as it gets. it would be interesting to know if anyone has played the dance side in the intervening years since this was covered up.
