PUSHERMAN?

ANYONE REMEMBER A GOOD OLD DANCER CALLED THE 'PUSHERMAN', PLAYED AT CASINO ETC. (NOT THE FUNKY CURTIS MAYFIELD THING FOUND ON THE GOLD FUNK CD.) ANYONE REMEBER WHO IT WAS BY?

IS IT RARE?

'Pusherman' by J.J. Callier used to get played at the time but I remember it as being a fairly faithful copy of the Mayfield tune. Hardly "a good old dancer" then, but my memory isn't what it was (hence can't remember the label) and it could be the one you're after.

Is it rare? Probably - and given the state of what's left of the so-called Northern Scene these days it almost certainly is - now you've mentioned that you want it.

Sorry, caught me in a cynical mood.

Yep, you've got the artist right, but the tune is an original and not the Curtis Mayfield hit, I've got the 45 but I have to dig it out of storage if anyone wants the full monty on it, I'm certain its on a New Orleans label. Also have some vague memory of everyones favourite son Ian Levine giving it a mention in a 70s issue of Black Music magazine! Don't quite get what you mean by your cynical comment, but I take it you mean to say its too funky or different for acceptance on todays scene? If you're in a cynical mood , why not move to Australia which has a great rare soul scene devoid of politics, mainly cos it was a started by 100% local Aussies ! The worry though is now that English ex pats are moving in on the Oz soul scene, it is starting to result in politics creeping in I'm afraid !!!

If anyone wants more info on the OZ Northern scene, I'm the man! Feel free to email me at soulaustralia@hotmail.com

Cheers everyone!

thanks both of you for your replies, maybe 'the cynic' couldnt dance!! yep, jj callier thats the one. i do get where 'the cynic' is coming from though regarding that since ive mentioned the record it will probably go up in value. over here in the uk it just needs a 'top?' dj to play some 45 thats been lying around (usually after it has been discarded by others) - eg nina simone- 'sister james' (whats that all about?); futures 'party time man'; richard berry 'have love will travel' and so on, hundreds of copies turning up yet people still pay silly money for them. if u like the 45 that much folks sit back for a few months and you'll be able to name your price for them when something else more 'fashionable' comes along. (now i'm being cynical!!).

cheers

wrong mr cynic - i asked fopr the info as i came across it on an old warrington parr hall tape and couldnt make out the muffled voice of the dj as to who it was. i did bid on it on ebay but got outbid (well outbid actually ) as i only put a resevre of £25.00 on it - didnt think it was that rare or sought after. anyone with one to sell for a more reasonable price then let me know. sorry i forgot to log in

i was amazed at price as was looking for it about 3/4 years ago and came acroos it in a sales box at the viaduct it had a price of 60.00 ukp on it thought this a bit steep then so 80 odd would seem about normal.

i remmeber it from ian playing it at the mecca it may also have been played at cleethorpes.

.....Still chasing this damn record!!!!

Anybody come across/know where I can get my hands on one.

Reading a thread on another site about determining how rare a record is by how long you have been looking for it.

Well, it's coming up to 2 years now, and the only one I've had a sniff of is the one that went on ebay in Nov 2003!!!!

Anyone help? Aww Please!!!!!

Pusherman used to get played up here in Scotland mid to late 80s by Barney (Who sadly passed on 8 years ago). Was a record that always got my attention and one that at one time I too was chasing but never managed to get hold of. (always thought the label looked cool)

Hope you have better luck than me Soulsville.

John.

Ginger used to play this a lot at St Ives in 76/77.

Agree with Soulsville, this is a hard tune to pick up,at £40 I would think bargain.

It took me years to find a copy & if someone were to offer me £40 for mine I would treat the offer with the contempt it deserved!

A fine Afro indeed,as for jj being white, on my label he's a sort of grainy green colour (see icon at top)

There's one on Vault of Soul, go listen

Bloody awful record IMO   with a very scary Manson Family type label.

Can take or leave the tune myself.... true what you say about label though  ....

But thanks anyway Matt.... because "you've" just reminded me about "updating" audio page with more tunes now recorded, label scanned and edited and built ready to put up....

Loads and loads to do.... just time a problem to record and scan label individually.... reckon web space available will allow 700+ tunes from out of the Ponds Forge DJ's boxes.... determined to get them all done though....

steve croft who used to run the venue used to play it

nice tune still imo

Yeah what happened to Steve Croft?

He also championed "Lady Day and John Coltrane" which I thought was a great unusual sound that I actively looked for after the first time I heard it. Bought one on a UK label a few weeks later - it had already been dropped from playlists by then
