Rain Out Of My Mind

Near Impossible… as this unicorn-RARE, Red/Black & White label design Promo and…

baring no resemblance what so ever to the very first copy ever played on the Northern Soul scene by inimitable DJ “Poke” at Cleethorpes Pier - he debuted this tune over the North Sea as a miss-pressed Brownstone 4202 with the label reading “Vicki Anderson - I’m Too Tough For Mr. Big Stuff”

A far cry from Miss Funk herself to girl-vocal Northern Soul - and it was quite some time before it’s true I identity was know. Even back then and absolutely now, I don’t think I’ve witnessed more than a couple of copies with this THREE-COLOUR PROMO design.

A listing that will spark long-thought from those many of you in hot-pursuit of the Rarest Format, when it comes to amassing the real-deal Northern Soul classics..

Herbert Hunter Happy Go Lucky

Now here’s a man who could sing a logarithms book and it would sound immense! Welcome, Ted Jarrett’s prodigy, the crooner who gave us the immortal “I Was Born To Love You” with his other top-drawer Northern Soul contribution. But this time it is so very much rarer.

It has always mystified why one particular 45 on a label is rare and another just impossible. Our data reveals this “Happy Go Lucky” as infinitely rarer than his better known classic, but pulsates with all the same qualities..

That huge vocal, the uplifting Ted Jarrett production, the squealing enthusiasm from the backing girls. It’s all there - it’s only the unquestionable rarity that has stunted it’s growth from growing into an equally revered tune..

Having said that there has been some inspirational Lone-Wolf DJs over the years who have been solidly behind it, giving birth to a strong underground appreciation…

Well here’s your chance to join those “Lone-Wolf” Jocks and add more weight to it’s elbow…What ever takes to become a NS dance-floor-favourite this 45 has it all - except blanket exposure… the shackles of genuine rarity strike again.

This is a tune that begs to be set free..

The under-recorded but highly appreciated “Queen Of Los Angeles Soul”

60s Soul that is - when this indomitable songstress’s every recording was a flawless testament to the neighborhood talent that crafted exactly what the European Soul collected was drawn to… and this lady is universally considered THE best California ever offered.

Before you today is this radiant lady’s most-valued 45; in sparkling flawless condition - with the topside exploding with every component that makes Northern Soul great, and a flipside that gives up an on-her-knees performance that is consider her finest “Deep Soul” moment.

The incomparable Ty Karim at her vibrant best…

Willie Mitchell Driving Beat - 7" Jukbox Mini Lp

Amazing this near 50 year old, remains unopened, still sealed, complete with 85% shrink wrap intact plus as you can see the 6 titled inserts for the jukebox are still “as new”. As are the two thumbnail album cover replicas awaiting 1966 jukebox display.

For the serious condition-conscious Northern Soul classic original hunters, It does not get better than this..

The six tracks read like they were especially selected for a “Willie Mitchell does Northern Soul” CD

  1. Everything Is Gonna Be Alright

  2. Nick-O-Demus

  3. The Champion pt 1

  4. That Driving Beat

  5. Fat Cat

  6. Smiley

Noting that the floorshaking soundfile sample is from a long ago listing and is only for reference…

… snippet reminder of why legendary Northern Soul turntable master John Vincent made this “at the time” album only track “The Champion” the biggest dancefloor-detonator in the UK. Sheffield’s Samantha’s Allniter signature tune and a Wigan Casino anthem…Mr. Vincent was never one to compromise.. FULL-ON Northern Soul being his trademark for decades..

This &” 6 mini-lp was John Vincent’s launchpad for what became a near 40 year NS love-affair and still today igniting the dancefloor dash as the few opening bars are unleashed..

We repeat - still seal and unplayed.

Unknown Girl Group Gonna Be Some Lovin' / Don't Let Your Heart

As far as we know this magnificent circa 1964 girl group acetate is unique… and never released. Feelgood New York, Motown-inspired Northern Soul mostly likely produced by girl-group doyen Richie Barrett. Using one of his many girl-vocalists he could call on…

…maybe Beverly Marcel, Shelia Ferguson or even a Veneers unissued session, but this is of course is all Manship conjecture, as the label reveals very little. One thing is for certain this “SPECTORIOUS” production was hanging onto the coattails of Phil Spector and his huge success at the time; Lenny Hodes’s brazen use of “Spector” name may have been considered disrespectful, but the Spectorious set-up did craft some outrageously fine Girl-Group recordings of its own. Notably Arlene Smith - Good Girl - and the label did enlist some of New York’s finest, Junior Bea, Sammy Lowe, Richie Barrett and the drumming usually provided by Pamama Francis.

This recent “find”, at this moment in time we can only guess who’s singing, who’s producing, who anyone is on the session…

One thing is for sure, your ears are treated to superlative mid-60s Girl Group ideal for the Northern Soul circuit. Whilst the serious Girl-Group collector will be gagging to get his hands on…the raucous flipside saturated by an insane saxophonist..

I love rarity, but I equally adore mystery especially of this high quality…Any extra information about of this jewel is of course most-welcome..

Troy Johnson I Want You / This Ain't The Way

Late 70s Los Angeles Soulful dance rarity; a deliciously uplifting mover bristling with brass, shrill ladies and an acutely pleading lead vocal.

Jimmy Jones directs the horns, that frantically stab through the lilting arrangement, but so precisely time so not to overwhelm the vocals leaving the recording a crisp clean dancer rippling with Soul. Love it.

The side Jimmy Jones decided to lead with is also a worthy listen. The pace drops but none of the beseeching delivery, squealing girl back-up or those potent horns, everything is again present and correct..

Two strong sides with “I Want You” being a long-appreciated “Soulful Dance” must have..

Radio Station I.D. stamp on one label is its only forgivable flaw.

Mamie P. Galore No Right To Cry / Do It Right Now

The much-loved Chicago Songbird, with her most-wanted, least seen and finest Northern Soul recording.

Mamie Galore became the Northern Soul Darling circa 1970 when her “It Ain’t Necessary” hit the very top of the then flourishing Northern Soul scene. With youngsters like me reading Blues & Soul adverts for the Top-Clubs of the time, sitting in awe oggling the play listings of artists I knew nothing of…

Catacombs adverts would amaze with their invitation to come and hear; Johnny Sayles, Richard Temple, Mamie Galore etc. During the early 70s there was rumors of an even better Mamie Galore recording on Sack. The mind-boggled and it was some time before I heard it and even longer before I actually saw a copy in all its glory, residing in Soul Sam’s DJ box.

Owning this 45 has always been an unreasonable challenge to complete. Super-Rare and giving up “perfectly” crafted Northern Soul from Wally Roker’s & Monk Higgins “Special Agent” team.

Click the sound file and wonder what if this Mamie recording was found before “It Ain’t Necessary”? What a test that would have presented the collector/DJ to try and emulate the standard the Catacombs was setting…

Near 45 years later this 45 is still 1000’s of times rarer than her St. Lawrence anthem… and dare we say.. some way better.

This copy has some light surface marks but as you can fully hear it plays clean & true…

Take note, Deep Soul depressives take time to hear the sorrowful flipside.. truly unobtainable DEEP!

Inconquerables For Your Love / Wait For Me

RESERVE NOT MET

You are viewing one of the planet’s rarest Northern Soul 45s!

Not only ludicrously-impossible RARITY but also a magnificently raw-vocal-group dancer from the highly lusted-after FLODAVIEUR label. Dave Polk’s Soul / Jazz vehicle for local Los Angeles talent; guided by his impressive skills for producing fine Northern Soul with a difference. Not forgetting his belated reputation for stand-out Jazz & Doo-Wop released on his Vistone label. A grievously overlooked genius by the USA public was Mr. Polk…

Dave made his Northern Soul mark in the late 90s with the discovery of the fabulous Antellects 45 “Love Slave” still very rare today. But this absurdly-rare-NS-Ghost is even harder to acquire, as the vocal-group flipside is considered a Doo-Wop trophy-piece.

Take a listen to this staggering example of vocal-group Northern Soul, whilst the serious Doo Wop collectors check out the flipside..

… then cast your eye over the “brilliant Yellow-vinyl” label scan.. totally awesome vista!

We think you’l agree with us, as we shout “this is our most-impressive auction listing in quite some time…”

Dobie Gray What A Way To Go

It has always puzzled me why this record has been Dobie’s rarest 45 for 4 decades and more. All his other 60s 45’s are relatively easy to locate; but this baby has been a Northern Soul ghost, relentlessly elusive almost a vinyl apparition.

Super-Rare it may be but that is not its only attraction. Click the soundfile to liberate addictive-feel-good Northern Soul. Simple but zippy piano intro is lifted by blaring horns, wailing flute and Dobie’s blossoming enthusiasm, weld together for highly effective Northern.

Like all stand-out recordings this session grows and grows..mushrooming into an uplifting dancer you’ll find yourself singing out loud. Another fab-tune tat has suffered over the decades from it’s own severe-rarity…

A surefire “Niter-Sound” if I’ve ever heard one…

Outsiders Time Won't Let Me

Oh the beauty of the British Red & White DEMO dazzles again!

The Outsides one of those few “Blue-Eyed” gatherings that just had the knack of consistently spewing out dynamic Northern Soul. Influenced by Tom King’s penchant for the “Soul” sound, mixed with his mindset for rebellious dance music The Outsiders “sound” ripped into Wigan Casino’s atmosphere every Saturday night.

This was rightly a huge hit in the USA but in the UK upon release, it fell through the cracks completely unnoticed by Radio stations and collectors alike. Seldom encountered as the 1966 British release… but as a near perfect Red & White DEMO it’s something of trophy.

Listen to uncompromisingly bold Northern Soul - then gaze upon its undeniable beauty…

Carl Douglas Serving A Sentence Of Life

This is what we said about the last promo copy we auctioned

An highly respected member of that exclusive club of BRITISH ONLY release 45s. That tick all the Northern Soul quality control boxes.

Totally RARE, darn fantastic Northern Soul, validated vintage classic a beautiful head-turner into the bargain But there’s always a reason for some of these Brit-Exclusives capturing the very essence of Northern Soul - the catalyst in this case being Pierre Tubbs.

Pierre collaborated in the studio with the likes of Sidney Barnes, J. L. Jackson etc. Now there’s a pairing that crafted some truly awesome Northern Soul classics. So two years later after rubbing shoulders with the greats of our music, Pierre Tubbs brought traces of New York Soul to the UK giving the then raw 26 year old Jamaican Carl Douglas the job of belting out his fine vocal through, this horn-riddled Northern Soul masterpiece.

Huge tune at The Torch, Cats, Blackpool Mecca, pre-Wigan Casino’s birth and another lasting legacy for the relentless British crate-digging troops who left no stone unturned in the exploration for the “next” tune. Oh Boy, whoever first discovered this killer - must have leaped for joy all the way home…!

Fire I'm Good For You / Freedom

A listing for those of you who seek genuine obscurity giving up quality dance soul.. look no further THIS IS RARE!!!

At the beginning of the summer of 1968 with San Francisco mourning the “death Of he Hippie” and “Haight-Ashbury” flowers wilted. Local record producer and lyricist Ray Columbus turned to Soul; guiding local Bay-Area band “Fire” through this terminally RARE double helping of vocal group Northern Soul.

Blaring horns, rattling kettle-drums make way for an urgent lead supported by equally enthusiastic harmony vocals. Relentless horns keep the jerking dance rhythms pumping away as the vocals get more and more exuberant.

Flip it over and the same musicians are thumping out those honkin’ horns, rumbling drums, this time the arrangement gets a little Funkier with the vocal-group responding to that challenge brilliantly..

RARE? We never even knew it existed..!!!

I was given that Rain promo by my mate's big brother along with loads of other stuff when I started late Stafford days and he quit post Casino , bona fide original and due to my naivety of the record always thought that was it and everbody had it. Always liked it in my teens as one of those " guilty pleasures" . Sold along with my sevens collection a few years ago and now know why the dealer at the time was smiling and being very interested in it at the time , asked how much I said I wanted a tenner as never seen another. !! Knowledge. is power guys!!!!!!

Mamie Galore seems relatively inexpensive.  I sold a spare a few years ago for double that amount.

It appears not in demand anymore early 90's it used to be very rare would sale for around  £800 to £900

The Dobie Gray seemed quite cheap in terms of rarity although I guess it's more of a collection record

See lots of copies of Honey You Can't Take It Back but most of these that come up for sale are the promos with Do You Really Have A Heart on both sides
