Feelgood New York, Motown-inspired Northern Soul mostly likely produced by girl-group doyen Richie Barrett. Using one of his many girl-vocalists he could call on… …maybe Beverly Marcel, Shelia Ferguson or even a Veneers unissued session, but this is of course is all Manship conjecture, as the label reveals very little. One thing is for certain this “SPECTORIOUS” production was hanging onto the coattails of Phil Spector and his huge success at the time; Lenny Hodes’s brazen use of “Spector” name may have been considered disrespectful, but the Spectorious set-up did craft some outrageously fine Girl-Group recordings of its own. Notably Arlene Smith - Good Girl - and the label did enlist some of New York’s finest, Junior Bea, Sammy Lowe, Richie Barrett and the drumming usually provided by Pamama Francis. Love it. The side Jimmy Jones decided to lead with is also a worthy listen. The pace drops but none of the beseeching delivery, squealing girl back-up or those potent horns, everything is again present and correct.. Galore No Right To Cry / Do It Right Now The much-loved Chicago Songbird, with her most-wanted, least seen and finest Northern Soul recording. Mamie Galore became the Northern Soul Darling circa 1970 when her “It Ain’t Necessary” hit the very top of the then flourishing Northern Soul scene. With youngsters like me reading Blues & Soul adverts for the Top-Clubs of the time, sitting in awe oggling the play listings of artists I knew nothing of… Catacombs adverts would amaze with their invitation to come and hear; Johnny Sayles, Richard Temple, Mamie Galore etc. During the early 70s there was rumors of an even better Mamie Galore recording on Sack. The mind-boggled and it was some time before I heard it and even longer before I actually saw a copy in all its glory, residing in Soul Sam’s DJ box. Owning this 45 has always been an unreasonable challenge to complete. Super-Rare and giving up “perfectly” crafted Northern Soul from Wally Roker’s & Monk Higgins “Special Agent” team. Click the sound file and wonder what if this Mamie recording was found before “It Ain’t Necessary”? What a test that would have presented the collector/DJ to try and emulate the standard the Catacombs was setting… Near 45 years later this 45 is still 1000’s of times rarer than her St. Lawrence anthem… and dare we say.. some way better. The Tempest Posted March 25, 2015 Share Posted March 25, 2015 I was given that Rain promo by my mate's big brother along with loads of other stuff when I started late Stafford days and he quit post Casino , bona fide original and due to my naivety of the record always thought that was it and everbody had it. Always liked it in my teens as one of those " guilty pleasures" . Sold along with my sevens collection a few years ago and now know why the dealer at the time was smiling and being very interested in it at the time , asked how much I said I wanted a tenner as never seen another. !!
