Ok who played the shite stuff Muriel day , night watch , James coit etc

Now't wrong with James Coit or the Night watch ( CU as Long Long way - The Elingtons IIRC), Certainly no worse than much of the shite that gets murdered on a weekly basis at today's pensioners disco's.

Night Watch was definitely Richard first. Sold him that and Peter Jarrett at same time.

Gary Lewis, Judith Durham, John Gary and all that modern sh*te

The same Judith Durham played by Brian Matthews other week, even he said it wasn't NS and I couldn't for the life of me think why anyone would want to play it, it was fookin terrible.

Yep it's a bit twee to say the least. I mentioned it to her when she was a guest at Magic in the 90's. Now Georgy Girl....that's a different story. Awesome!

I can`t remember Searling ever playing any shockers whenever I was at Wigan - am I right??

Here's an RS spot from September 1978. Some great stuff, but also a fair bit of less than stellar material in my opinion. I think as the relationship between Searling and Anderson went on the classic late Wigan sets took shape. This is from the beginning of that association, and while there are a few mammoth exclusives which went on to be all time classics there's also stuff from many other sources just like all the other regulars: some revivals and quite a few records that others were also hammering as well. Love Hustle, JC Messina, Reperata and Ben Zine are all—with hindsight—poor. Other things are definite 'Marmite' records, Wall of Sound, Peggy March, Lou Roberts etc.

Betty Boo ‘Say It Isn’t So’
Lou Roberts ‘You Fooled Me’
Vicki Baines ‘Country Girl’
Cobblestone ‘Trick Me Treat Me’
Paula Durante ‘If He Were Mine’
Benny Sigler ‘Who You Gonna Turn To’
Yvonne Vernee ‘Just Like You Did Me’
The Construction ‘Hey Little Way Out Girl’
Rita & The Tiaras ‘Gone With The Wind’ (first time out?)
Jimmy Burns ‘I Really Love You’
Gerri Thomas ‘Look What I’ve Got’
J.C.Messina ‘Time Wont Let Me’
Paul Anka ‘When We Get There’
The Twans ‘I Can’t See Him Again’
Wakefield Sun ‘Trypt On Love’
The Dogs ‘Soul Step’
Reperata & The Delrons ‘It’s Waiting There For You’
The Newbeats ‘Don’t Turn Me Loose’
Toni Basil ‘Breakaway’
Holly St James ‘Thats Not Love’
Frankie Beverly & The Butlers ‘Because Of My Heart’
Bobby Paris ‘I Walked Away’
Lou Roberts ‘You Fooled Me’ (again)
Tamala Lewis ‘You Won’t Say Nothing’
The Generation ‘Hold On’
Ben Zine ‘Village Of Tears’
Family Affair ‘Love Hustle’
The Millionaires ‘You’ve Got To Love Your Baby’
The Wall Of Sound ‘Hang On’
Peggy March ‘If You Love Me’
The Construction ‘Hey Little Way Out Girl’ (again)
Paula Durante ‘If He Were Mine’ (again)

think it was the likes of Bileo, Pretenders ( yrself ) etc

I still enjoy and appreciate much of what you played during both that spot and that period generally Arthur. I might get flamed on here, but as I view it, it was all a part of the huge progression that the scene was enjoying at the time due largely to people such as yourself, Soul Sam, Richard, Dave Raistrick et al.

BY MY RECKONING, SEVEN OF THOSE EIGHT 45'S ARE BY ................... WHITE ARTISTS  !!  ( YET MORE PROOF THAT THE NORTHERN SOUL VENUE OF VENUES WAS ALWAYS MORE ABOUT A NORTHERN DANCING SCENE, RATHER THAN A RARE SOUL SCENE).  MUST SAY I ALWAYS ENJOYED MY TRIPS TO THE CASINO, BUT THE TRUE RARER SOUL US 45 EXPERIENCE DIDN'T MATERIALIZE OR WAS EVEN DREAMED OF TO ANY EXTENT VIA GREATER SOUL APPRECIATION,  DISCOVERY. OR OPEN-MINDED ACCEPTANCE OF OBSCURE AND RARER BLACK RECORDINGS DIDN'T REALLY GET GOING UNTIL STAFFORD !!   (COMMENTS AND COUNTER ARGUMENTS PLEASE)  !!!!!!!!!

Nope. Blackpool Mecca was on it from the beginning from 1973. Especially the last hour between 1.00-2.00am.

I reckon I played James Coit at Wigan first, in the early session in Mr. M's. Searling heard it, borrowed it from me and RS passed it to Alan Rhodes to play in the main room. I bought it from Sean Gibbons who played it as a popular spin in the Morecambe/Lancaster area. I'm not ashamed, there are far worse records out there.
