Wigan's Ovation - A Genuine Question

Recommended Posts

Were/are Wigan's Ovation universally hated?

I'm just having a major clearout and working through a pile of CDs - keep or chuck - and came across what I guess was WO's only CD release.

Had a quick listen and whether you call it blue-eyed soul, pop soul, youth club soul or whatever I think it's good for what it is.

So it's going on the keep pile.

Anyone on here willing to admit to Wigan's Ovation as a guilty pleasure? LOL! :)

There are about 100, less socially acceptable guilty pleasures, i would admit to before that.

First time I saw or heard of W O I was in the pub and Top of the Pops was on, I remember people saying 'Hey Bob you're into this kind of thing aren't you, have you got this? Real cringeworthy moment.

I would rather admit to being cross-dresser................or even a Blackburn Rovers supporter!

Hang on Steve, that's taking it a bit far admitting being a Blackburn fan.

My God just when you thought it was safe.......................    :dash2:  :dash2:  :dash2:

Lots of outrage - I expected that. LOL But I still don't get why they were/are demonised to such an extent. Weren't they just four half-decent musicians trying to earn a crust.

If they were rubbish I would get it - but listening to that CD I would say their versions of Ten Miles High and Superlove (white soulful pop) were probably better than the David & the Giants versions (white soulful pop). Or were David & the Giants hated too.

Come on I've put my head above the parapet - tell me what was SOOOOOOOO wrong with them.

I hated them, because I had to go to work, the day after they appeared on TOTP and then take crap all day, I hate Burnley because I support Blackburn and they once beat us. I like Leeds because the chip butties are massive, and they have the worst centre back in the entire universe.

Dave I do kind of get that.

I think the worst ridicule I ever suffered was when the Tams were on TOTP. I was at college at the time and we had a TV room which was absolutely rammed with 95% Prog Rock fans when TOTP was on. Just imagine when the Tams came on in their pink suits and pink hats and choreographed dance moves. The whole place erupted in laughter.

Even that didn't get me down. As usual it was - if you don't get it - your loss - not mine. :D

It might have been this very edition here. LOL

I don't know if you were there when it was happening but the embarrassment factor was through the roof, the p*ss taking hurtful, yes they were a band of musicians trying to make a living but off our backs and they were just fake. If they were that good they should have done their own music, they were mild glam rockers with Soul badges. I cringe just remembering it and the idiots dancing on T.O.T.P'S, the rot started with the cameras for "This England", suddenly Sweet were out and Soul was in. In 72/73 David & the Giants sounded fab & new as well as different, I'm not sure they'd work today though.

Spot. :shades:

Just found a history of Wigan's Ovation written by band member Jim McClusky who says...

We used to play there [Wigan Casino] about every 6 weeks or so then one night around mid-night as we we’re packing our gear away and getting ready to leave the doors burst open and all these kids rushed in. I asked mike (walker), who was the manager of wigan casino and who, 2 years later, was to become manager of wigans ovation, “whats going on?” and he told me that, “it was something new he was trying for a few weeks, you’ll never know”, he said, “it may never catch on” of course it was the first northern soul all nighter. It was a massive success and the rest they say “is history”.
