I remember that exact moment, I also had this on tape from the night. Russ, "Anybody want a copy, 7 quid!.....and it`s 8 for (sounds like) Russel Steel"

That was when the Pussycat boots were on sale in the record bar.

I`ll have some of that Pete!

Mention of playing records getting repeated plays, I only ever taped there once and it was a couple of months after this, some time in May 1974.

"Panic" and "Too darn soulful" must have been the current flavours as they both got played an hour apart.

I'm fairly sure it was the first time that night for the Carstairs "It really hurts me girl"

Also... who remembers that 'vote' to continue the all nighters and have them end later in the day?

That's on the same tape!

Of course it never happened, but Mike Walker went on stage and asked the question and got a show of hands in favour of it, but you can't 'hear' that on the recording, only his promise to look into it!  :D

Yes, I remember it very well John, "Maybe get the nighters to finish at 10"..... I was on the balcony at the coke bar at the time

That would be the one.

No Pete, that was his original he was selling for £7.00. As soon as the boot came out some of the DJs would flog their originals. At least that`s what I always thought, maybe Kev can clarify.

I think the boot was a quid or so.

I think it was the boot you know, I bought one in 1976 and it was £4 then, I sold it at Wigan for £8...could be wrong

Remarkable Pete. This is almost identical to a live Wigan tape I made on the last Saturday in March 1974, down to the multiple plays of Dana Valery and Butch Baker as he was known at the time. There is only one track on my version that I can not name and Pat Brady could not identify it when I gave him a copy. Is one of the unknowns by 100 Proof 'One Man's Leftovers'? My C90 tape finishes off with Junior Walker's ' I Ain't Goin' Nowhere' and has the Olympics 'Same Old Thing' early on, but otherwise it is very, very similar to this one. The same sounds were also spun the previous Saturday on my first visit to the Casino - the occasion was so overwhelming, I must have said I'm going back next weekend with a tape recorder.

Don't recall it being around in 1974 but got the Butch Baker pressing on Cherub that summer. Snapped up the pink Pussycat version when I first saw it in 1975 or 1976. It predated the CBS Special Products release if I recall, so I didn't bother buying this one.

Trust me it was 74, another one dropped off the Mecca playlist like a hot brick.

I have the add from NME from Selectadisc in a scapbook somewhere.

Must be the same night - but I don't think I Ain't Goin Nowhere is the Jr Walker version

I haven't heard the tape Dave. It was a suggestion because the Barbour song sprang to mind. (and not much does at my age). Barbour version is faster paced to the old Jimmy Reed Jr. + diff writing credits.

The second unknown is definitely "One mans leftovers" by 100% Proof. I don't recognise the first unknown track.

I can confirm that the Dana Valery on the pink double sided Pussycat boot was about in '74, though for some reason it was scarce - were Columbia being a bit proactive with bootleggers at the time?

The plot thickens. I have named the unknown sound without hearing Pete's upload. So, it appears that this tape could well be one made off my master copy although I don't really recall making one for anyone apart from myself. The original C90 being of thinner tape got munched up a few times and then I made another copy of it before the tape-to-tape machine packed in. I have now remade the tape, a manually remastered version you could call it, and I play this on the last Saturday of March by way of an anniversary celebration.

I was evidently unaware of the Pussycat release back in 1974 even though that was when I bought my first Northern records such as Butch Baker, Gwen and Ray, Bob Wilson Strings etc.

Would be very interested to know the identity of the unknown track if anyone can work it out, thanks..

Yep that was pretty much the norm. Record pressed, original worth a couple of quid more.

The first unknown is Sam Dees - Soul Sister.  I think it's introduced on the tape with a cover-up name; can't make it out.

Thelma Houston from the Mowest LP? Was certainly played around that time...

It was the 1st version played I think.....certainly before Jnr Walker.

How very shrewd

Yep....how did you think I and similar Souls felt selling(in my case) SandI Sheldon Okeh Demo for £8, Tony Clarke Landslide White Chess DJ £20, Yvonne Baker £25, Professionals Groove City £25.

Happy times though.

Frankie the chap said the original is on a C120 and the tape he sent me (not the original) was indeed copied onto a C120

Cheers Pete. My mistake. It is a C120 tape, not the usual sort I tend to use. I still have the box somewhere but am currently in Texas doing a bit of crate digging. C120 was the longest tape available and being thinner, easily got caught up in the machine. Over the years, it got twisted several times hence the quieter and distorted patches. This was the only tape we had in our family at the time so it got absolutely hammered until it went to Wigan and then the tabs were broken out. For the record, you have put up the B side first and the A side second. Part of the tape is continuous but much of it selective as I just had to have Butch Baker and Dana Valery, the standout tunes from the previous Saturday, my first visit to the Casino.

Hey Pete, I must have deleted this from my hard drive somehow...I was looking for it tonight but it`s gone.

Do you still have a link to it?

Cheers

Steve and anyone else - I have posted a large amount of live tapes onto Mixcloud over the last 4 or 5 years - mainly Wigan but also Cleethorpes, 100 Club and so on - you'll have to search for them by scrolling down the list but there must be 20 or more

DG "Soul Clappin",one of  yours) .You bemoan the fact , in a prehistoric post , that you don't mind people nic in your stuff but at least "Giv e me Bit of Credit" .When I make up the liable how does "Foot see" recorded live  1974 by  "Wigan's Chosen One" sound?LOL Johnny Hart Malaga, Spain.
