It's not about living in the past.. it's about still enjoying songs you love irrespective of how many times you've heard them.

the only thing that bugs me is hearing the same oldies played over and over again, shows a lack of imagination imho, but apart from that, i enjoy all arenas which make up the 'rare' scene, from RnB to upfront soul, Delx

I am of the opinion that some of the 'regular top 50' northern oldies have become nothing more than 'pop' tunes with 'pop' being meant in the true sense of the word;- 'popular'

Therefore you could go to an Abba tribute night or Status Quo night and know all the words to the popular stuff churned out if that was your bag and think you'd had a brill night. I think thats the way with some of the northern oldies brigade.. Just keep turning out the same top popular tunes and they're happy... Each to their own I suppose. :D

I don't know if us oldies fans live in the past or not, I don't get out much. But whilst I'm here can anyone confirm some extremley distressing news i've just heard; apparently Wigan Casino is on the verge of closing, can anyone confirm, before I set off to a nighter there?

Thank god for that; my trousers are either that big or have that many pleats and pockets, I spend that last 25 years ironing them and it would be a shame not to be able to sport them in front of the stage and end up looking like a div!

Anyone know of an easy way to get Brut out of the bottle and into the steam- water chamber of an iron?

HI there,

I don't think so, I'm an oldies fan, I wasn't born when the Casino closed and I don't live in the UK, so anyway I can't be really up to date to the tunes that are currently played on the scene.

I think mine is a very particular case, but anyway, we all live in the past don't we?? 60s & 70s music is not exactly the present :D

Thats true Dante but there are some brilliant less played tunes of that era unfortunately not all will listen to them at times and has been said to us when we've been at venues where a DJ has played something not in the 'top 10' (Pop pickers! :D ) 'Whats this modern crap' and 'Why can't he play stuff we know?'' when its actually been a tune played at Wigan ! (I'll let you know what they were later when my memory serves me better!!) we didn't know all the tunes that were played at Wigan, whats wrong with breaking a few different ones now and again??

Could this be tied in with the.....

NORTHERN SOUL NIGHT TONIGHT....VILLAGE HALL 7PM TILL 1AM £2 OTD Debate???

If its advertised as a Northern Soul Night play Northern Soul, (check out flyer below) You dont have to play the run of the mill oldies, plenty of good Northern semiknown/unknown that have the dance beat required to constitute a Northern Soul Night.

To put a finer picture on Northern Soul, to all you out there that thinks it was Wigan was the first place where it began YOU ARE WRONG most of you will not be old enough from when it started. The so called gospel church Wigan Casino only took Northern soul to another level in the early stages the sounds were good but then the pop pickers came and changed it, some liked the new sounds and stayed others went the other way to keep to the sounds they liked before.

SO any one for this bus trip to Wigan this weekend 25 pound none refundable ticket with wrist band ooops  well if Im going to get the blame for it who gives a oot Im letting myself go and getting down to the same level as some on here

Yeah but no. They're not all oldies anyway because that Russ Winstanley snogged Kelly and then Dave Evison went and played a bootleg, so there.

Don't go giving me no evils.

sometimes on here I find myself looking at the top to remind me where I am

It all started in 1960s Hitsville, USA - the birthplace of Motown.

When I was a pup back when Gods dog (dendog) was alive the sound's was played on

Radio Luxembourg on our radio you could listen all over the world and it had glass things in the back.

Dusty Springfield was making herself heard with soul she then came back to us from the states what did she do for Soul?? Northern Soul in the early 60s was unforgettable big names like Kim Weston, Martha Reaves, and so on. Lets talk Dungeon, Mojo, Wheel, Torch, Mecca and so on & on & on from where it started for me was soul nights in the early 60's Wigan was eary 70's

i did say some of you were not old enough to remember so sorry to those that were

These discussions make me laugh.

The oldies brigade is holding the scene back, let's be more progressive listen to my latest discovery it's only 40 years old! The majority of records (if not all) played on the scene are oldies (30-40+years old), it's just that some are played more often than others.

Everybody has different tastes, it's as simple as that. Lifes too short to be worrying about stuff like this.

As so many new spins eventually feed into the 'Oldies' circuit, I suppose another question would be... Are 'Modern' Fans Living In The Future?

For me it all boils down to this I recently sold an orange issue of roy hamilton crackin up for £62 on ebay ,a supposedly rare modern track I listed at £4.99 It's on JM's for £50 , no takers, just put it up again with soundfile on the hope somebody will bid.So what I'm really saying is the demand is still with the oldies :shades:

if you want to listen to oldies go to a oldies venue if you dont then dont go

Ahh if only it were that simple.

I once played records at what I reckoned would be an oldies night. Poor reaction, ah well, can't be helped, I'm not especially good at playing records anyway. Bloke comes up after about 45 mins and says "play some oldies", "I am playing oldies" says I "No you're not" says he. Oh bugger...

I think I'll do a poll.

==============

The title of the thread gives it away. Those who like oldies will be told they're living in the past, told to go to specific venues, told they're holding back the scene etc. Then there will be posts re: the clothes they wear etc etc. Really can't understand why it isn't live and let live, but it seems to be the nature of the soul scene, and a very sad state of affairs. I really have never seen hordes of oldies fan ganging up and saying 'we are right' they just do the right thing. Go out, dance, and enjoy themselves, one of the main purposes of the soul scene as far as I'm concerned......no agenda.......that refers in particular to the punters, as opposed to promoters.

For myself I enjoy oldies, newies, modern and a tiny little bit of R&B, but wouldn't dream of saying which is the right way forward, because they all have merits.

Can a record that was classed as 'modern' 29 years ago, e.g. Eddie Holman' s "Night to remember" be classed as an 'oldie' or is it a 'modern oldie' or even an 'old modernie' tune????

How long has a record have to have been played before it is classed as an oldie? Some of the 'TOP' tunes still doing the rounds, by old standards should now be classed as oldies, even overplayed oldies come to think of it!!!!!!!!

 Here we go again, why do people have to knock knock knock the " oldies" I think thats the key... that word.... " oldies"...... Its called "soul" actually, and does it matter, if its a sound people like, and they get GET up and dance to or clearly enjoy, many people just like to sit and listen.

Went to New quay weekender( great for a first time!!!) and I thought the best slot was Soul Sam and his Twisted Wheel sounds ..........the place just rocked!!!! Likewise the Wigan and Torch, Catacombs sounds.... fantastic

Equally there were some good newer sounds... ummmm but for me .....keep on coming the Oldies!!!

SO THERE.... :shades:

Answer me this Why wont you play the oldies then??? Maybe your collection is lacking???? or you cannot keep the floor filled perhaps. or maybe you dont want to??? :shades:

Oldies, newies its all the same to me as I wasn't there back in the day, however if its about the memory more than the music thats a worry.

Let's face it....They are all oldies really....I play some what people call modern or newies but the truth is they are 15 to 20 years old.....

I think it matters very little how old a record is, what decade it was recorded in within the boundries of the scene 60's, 70,s etc. etc. and how often it's been played, if there is a quality there in the first place examples like George Blackwell, Billy Prophit, Earl Jackson, Duke Browner, Willie Hutch, Ronnie McNeir, Sam Williams, Ty Karim and dozens of others prove to be timeless because they are simply quality records which have stood the test of time, i believe we are in the best possible postion now circa 2006 to be able to select the best we can to play, dance to, collect and enjoy from whatever style and era, forty years of club culture is something to be proud of, even better to still be part of.

My own personal taste has changed dramatically over the years, now if i get fed up or bored with a tune rather than keep playing it i moove it on and chase other tunes, but there are some tunes which i simply can't part with such as the examples given above, we all have favorite records, periods of the scene, memories conneted with venues and records played which is all part of us, i'm not ashamed to say that the likes of Roscoe Robinson - That's Enough - Gerri/Wand, Willie Tee - Thank You John - Atlantic and again many more will always rate in my all time favorite list, why? simply quality recordings nothing more.

Of course we need new discoveries for the good of natural progression as a music scene, but to suggest that oldies fans could be holding us back is really a little blinkered as i believe the scene today is in the main retro nostalgia based which is driven by the classic tunes at many venues, there should and is a balance with pockets of DJ's and venues going at it in a more open minded approach blending all the styles, era's etc. together, new with the old but having said that people deside what that want to collect, listen and dance too, i for one will never down anyone who perhaps likes oldies only, i'm more pleased that we are all still going at it so whatever floats your boat should be applaued and not looked down upon, personally i like to hear different and unknown tunes then i can deside myself if i like them or not and again what's good for one person may not be the case for another, it's all horses for cources with this old chestnut.

We have so much stuff to go at which speaks volumes to me at least of how lucky we all are to have such a vast amount of records to go at, thousands of them, i agree it's a little short sighted to constantly go at the same tried and tested tunes week in week out, for me this becomes boring but again if some people only want this to get their Northern Soul fix then fine, we can select the venues we attend and avoid the ones we feel can't deliver what we are looking for, this has been stated before on SS and makes sense to me at least.

There are enough venues out there to provide everyone connected with the scene what they musically and personally want and if not collecting what you want and like should fill the void if you can't find a venue to cater for your personal taste, the chase and the wanting of certain records keeps us all going, finding a well balanced venue offering something for everyone also plays it's part in keeping the scene alive, nothing beats 2000 people all as one clapping to The Jades - I'm Where It's At...has to be where it's at and what it's all about...the same can be said if it's The Mellow Souls or even Frank Wilson....there's nothing quite like Soul music it's inside us all...for life.

Yes you did... :D

Funny how all the people who claim they only want to hear new sounds insist on having the same old oldies vs. newies debate. Ironic eh?

Personally i like both.

The last Marrs Bar was a case in point, oldies, newies, 60s, 70s, 80s, R&B, crossover... a bunch of DJs who knew exactly what they were doing and a bunch of punters ready to dance to everything.
