Timeless Legend (baby) Don't Do This To Me / Where There's Love There's A Way

Ridiculously RARE and such an outrageously fine example of rare neighborhood D.I.Y. Soul.

Some records instantly hit you on the intro, some record smack when the vocal kicks in, some hit you as you soak up the whole recording, demanding a repeat drop of the needle.

This baby does all three, EVERYTIME!

A totally superior Soulful indie from the streets of Ohio and the brain of Dean Francis. Take time to absorb two contrasting but equally scintillating sides.

The dance side starts with a penetrating piano riff, bolstered by Bass-guitar strumming kick-starting the urge to dance, then an expressive lead vocal kindles the lyrics before it flares up into a totally addictive example of the genre. This session benefits from strong harmony backing vocals.. as it grows and grown on the back of an fully enthusiastic studio.. why not this really is a tune to enjoy as it swamps your mind …LOVE IT! That’s why it’s in my DJ box, and never fails to turn head, park beer and stop conversations..

Flip it over for a poignant ballad, as the man pours his out to a sweetly delivered lovers response. As the story unfolds through clear concise lyrics that so many of us can relate to… a fabulous tale of love and the turmoil it can stir and the possible solutions it throw up. SWEET SOUL at its very finest!

Two sides you just cannot ignore, with enviable rarity status too..

Sapphires Evil One / How Could I Say Goodbye

The lure of the RED & WHITE promo, could be overwhelmingly alluring this time; as the old-school will be equally pulled towards that ATV logo that adorned our TV sets whilst us youngsters were riveted to “The Tingha & Tucker Club” “Thunderbirds” “I Love Lucy”.

Someone at ATV was opening EMI mailers and watching The Sapphires RED & WHITE promo fall onto their desk..

In the days of the mid-60s it meant nothing to the ATV mail-room boy. But a few years on as the Manchester or Sheffield all-night Soul clubs fueled the desire to own those long deleted 45s the club-Jocks were spinnig. That was when UK Soul 45 fever took a stranglehold on our youth… with “Tingha & Tucker” memorabilia packed away under the bed, out of sight from the new girlfriend; as now showing her your prized “Red & White” was the essential turn on..

Well here is the real turn-on, the absurdly rare 1965 DEMO of a classic Philly girl-group Northern Soul dancer… not quite a once-in-a-lifetime chance, but pretty damn close - this record only scarcely ever comes to market..

This this condition with two flawless vinysl and the iconic ATV logo hand-stamped by “Tingha” neatly onto the centerpiece.. it’s just too much to resist!

Emmitt Long Call Me

When first discovered, this 45 was treated by some with a little suspicion, as there was little or no information of the label - so sparse in fact there was no writer credits, music publisher, address or anything to indicate location or creators..

Today, those 45-doubters are kicking themselves HARD! As this piece of 70s brilliance is so tricky to find and even harder to acquire ownership. In fact it is our first listing of this disc for fully 6 years and only our 3rd copy this century…

Well if you owned it, would you sell it.. ?

Two things we do know; it was produced by Charlie Richardson & sung by Emmitt Long… so let’s hear what Soul genius this pairing came up with…and ponder if you can afford to wait another 6 or more years for ownership…

AWESOME tune…

Marvelettes Twistin' Postman / I Want A Guy

If I get all forensic on y’all, squint away through the dust covered lenses of my close-ups. I can detect the merest of sleeve-brush on the vinyl or do I? I’m flicking it around in the light, changing the angles.. I can find no discernible flaw on either playing surface..

A magnificent Mint minus grade for this 1962 born Motowner and whilst scrutinizing the 7” landscape I detect a minuscule paper-fragment hanging on for dear-life in center-hole.. every single silver printed letter on the label is still perfectly formed. It has been played as the spindle hole scarcely reveals ..but condition is eye-widening.

Again a listing for the OCD afflicted the British Motown flaw-analysts, the continual up-graders seeking impossible perfection..this discs condition is in as good as you could ever possibly hope for, whilst seeking ownership of a 53 year old…

Chuck Jackson Arrives!

You are viewing the extremely elusive UK MONO press - in as near shop-fresh condition as you could ever dream of investigating..

Taking this album very carefully from its original “advert”inner sleeve - I’m confronted with astonishingly MINT vinyl and labels. Maybe this first or only three albums for Motown, has been left unplayed for the last 47 years. The only signs of its 1968 birth are a few very light creases to the laminated front cover (see scan) and scrutinize.

It’s flawless!

So now click the soundfile and unleash the persuasive voice of the mighty-Chuck, benefiting from Motown’s incomparable orchestration and lyrics.. we highlight some stand-out tracks that never achieved 45 release - prepare to be dazzled.

  1. Ain’t no sun since you’ve been gone - a killer version
  2. To see the sun again - virtually unknown Northern Soul candidate
  3. I like everything about you - again Chuck stamps his authority on it
  4. We’ll find a way - another surprisingly overlooked Northern Soul dancer
  5. Where you gonna run to now - for me the most-impressive track

plus we’ve reminded you just how Chuck’s short Motown contract crafted some exceptional dance tunes with two cuts that actually did achieve 7” release. “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “What am I gonna do without your love” two NS dancefloor winners, occasionally gracing the turntables of more inventive Motown evenings.

Chuck Jackson within the Motown studios was always going to trigger the creation of great Soul..possibly too Soulful as Motown became more and more “Billboard” orientated.

But to have the chance of a MINT copy is near 50 years later - is almost as special, as this Canadian’s titanic vocal-prowess..

Herman Hitson You Can't Keep A Good Man Down / Ain't No Other Way

If a gathering Soul aficionados were requested to formulate a list of the greatest Soul vocals of the last century, I would expect Herman Hitson to be perched comfortably in the Top Ten places… so that leaves us all wondering why so few “Hitson” sessions where ever liberated onto vinyl.

All his 45 recordings are hard-to-find, today you are viewing and listening to his most-challenging to track and capture.

The topside of this Georgia conceived killer, instantly legitimizes the rating “Of One Of The world’s Greatest Soul Crooners” ever. As his subtly pitched snarl charms you into an atmosphere only the “greats” take you to. Wrapped in a blanket of Sister-Soulstress cooing, a gently plucked guitar, distant horns, as if a brass-section was strolling toward the studio from way down the street, becoming more emphatic as the session builds. As Herman slowly but surely sinks to his knees delivering a rousing vocal performance..

Superlatives escape my mind, as every word seems an understatement of this man’s power-to-maneuver your emotions into a place real-life just can’t!

So if I said it is more-sought-after today, for the flipside.. would that amaze you?… but not when this screaming FUNKER invades your head.. those horns are no longer next door, they are right in the middle of the action; as the brass-section explodes into action, but do they overwhelm Herman’s voice….? Do they heck-as-like. He screams, squeals, growls, snarls and groans his way through the tsunami of deafening-blows, serving up floor-rumbling FUNK!

Wow ..two proper-tunes, each exemplary precedents of their genre - from a man who has few, if any vocal peers..

Exits I Don't Want To Hear It

Under-valued for too long. Is this gathering of Jimmy Conwell, Godoy Colbert, Sir Hank Graham & Dorondo Pulliam again serve up breathtaking Los Angeles Northern Soul with their hardest to locate Gemini 45. In perfect previously unplayed condition.

The unmistakable lead vocal of Jimmy Conwell in just over 2 minutes paints a picture of a man “Who’s Had Enough” and he don’t hear any of her reasoning he off to pastures for the love he craves… Conwell’s vocal is so suited to this style of beseeching singing.. whether he had tears in his eyes whilst choking on the lyrics we’ll never know, but you can’t help thinking he did.

The vocal-harmony backup is impeccable enriching the recording into a different level.. these guys, when they did - they did it up good…

Over the decades this 45 has been highly coveted by those DJs who spin the specialist “underplayed” evenings and Sunday afternoons. Time this beauty reached a wider audience. If not it should be filed into a collection where only vinyl & label perfection gain entry.

PERFECT vocal-group Northern Soul, in perfect condition.

B. J. The D.j. Jones C/w Music Sauce Soul Is Born (it Ain't Made) / Soul Is Born

A listing for those of you fixated on the seriously obscure FUNK! - those street-level projects that only reached for friends & family or those given away at artists local performance. Here is Orlando Florida’s answer to E. Rodney Jones, as the mighty-presence of B.J. instantly hits you.

As you can see on the label B. J. The D.j. Jones used this 45 to promote himself adding his phone # to the label.

So now get ready for some neighborhood FUNK, drenched in inventive weirdness with a unique instrumental groove on the flip. Dominated by a shuddering harmonica with some Bluesy guitar picking with a Funk rhythm.

The vocal side “E. Rodney” himself would have been proud of, as B.J.’s gnarled vocal preaches the values of “Real-Soul”. Ear-catching lyrics stroll though the maze of harmonica puffs & sucks as you’d expect with B.J. as the artist.

I find this ultra rare Orlando, Florida session, a totally refreshing journey away from the norm. Rippling with individual invention and personalized neighborhood musicianship…

SO RARE and we just LOVE IT!

Beginning Of The End Funky Nassau Part 1 & 2

First label before Alston - very tough to acquire this FUNK anthem in it’s birthday-clothes.

If you just want this classic tune - we suggest you hunt down the Alston release, a minor hit and not hard to acquire. But if your a stickler for own only the rarest possible form. Let us assure you, this disc, brandishing this label is one very tricky disc to nail down. In fact a “Scarlet Pimpernel” of FUNK collecting..

But maybe not just FUNK collecting as recently I heard this played at an established Rare-Soul event and it rammed the floor, you could taste the enthusiasm. I’m not sure why it surprised me, because it is after all one of the great “dance” records ever made…

But trying to own it on V.P.M. is decidedly problematic…

Edward Hamilton And The Arabians Baby Don't You Weep / Tell Me

How nice is it to see this Northern Soul timeless classic - free of water-stained labels, now that is not easy to find.

An anthem from those halcyon days of the early 70s. Catching just the very death-throws of “The Golden Torch”, for the baton to be carried pre-Wigan Casino by Richard Searling at Bolton’s unforgettable “Va Va’s” niter. This spin particularly standing out as one of the memorable hearings, as it rippled with more-class than was healthy for our pockets, with what sounded like the London Philharmonic Orchestra providing the backing.

A stadium of strings and rattling drum intro, magnetizes the mind as Edward’s sandpapered tonsils hit home with the hopeful lyrics; as those strings n’ things are enriched by “The Arabians” silky-choruses..

THIS IS CLASS! it was in 1972 and it sounds even more High-Class 43 years on.

Note this much-loved Detroit production credits “Mike Terry” on the label.. and those two genius wordsmiths Fred Bridges and Richard Knight all guided by the steady experienced hand of Lou Beatty,…

The result being utter Northern Soul brilliance - even more brilliant than the rarely witness unscathed label. Close inspection of the vinyl surfaces only reveals the light blemishes of sleeve contact cuddling..

PS the flipside just killz me… btw

E. Rodney Jones R&b Time Part 1 & 2

In the world of the Northern Soul classic DEMO’s, this example is unquestionably a very seldom-seen Promo-trophy-piece!

Let’s be right about this, the genuine “Black” Tuff log first press stock release copy is no easy find these days; and we are certainly not embarrassed to admit this is only the 2nd time this century we have listed this timeless-tune as a PROMO copy, that was over 8 years since.

Accumulating the Northern Soul classics in their rarest form is challenging and terrific fun… if that is your weakness.. this 45 as a PROMO copy, is a must!

Bobby Williams I've Only Got Myself To Blame / I'll Hate Myself Tomorrow

Detroit collides with Texas on Bobby Williams’s most-wanted Northern Soul platter, in impossibly impeccable condition.

Willie Schofield & Sonny Sanders, two Detroiters with exceptional writing & arranging skills craft the very best of Bobby’s Sure-Shot offerings. Piercing Horns erupt to clear a path for Bobby scything vocal to thrill, as an upfront piano-playing rattles out the NS dance-rhythm. Not typical Detroit, much more potent than definitive Motor City, angrier than the norm and much better for that approach..

So prepare again as we flip it over, for extraordinary SOUL with a Deep outing written by Houston’s finest Deadric Malone (Don Robey) & Vernon Morrison a writing duo who know exactly how to script a despairing ballad. Check out “I’ll Hate Myself Tomorrow” it is one of the finest Deep Soul offerings of the 60s, suffering a little by being on the flipside of such a “Monster” NS tune…

Despairing stuff saturated in Texas angst in the lyrics and shimmering with Detroit in the production..

Two great sides, and other that a very light “retrieve” finger blemish on the A-side vinyl - this 45 is as perfect as those gleaming labels suggest.

Dusty Springfield That's The Kind Of Love I've Got For You

When comes to girl-vocalists, NOBODY is more collectable than our Dusty!

A listing especially aimed at the worldwide army of Dusty-Devotees.. Here is one her toughest pieces of work to acquire; a 1978 UK Mercury Promo 12” in it’s original promo birth-sleeve - all in immaculate condition.

This is RARE RARE 12” but may I say the producer of this recording - should be “shot at dawn” for a crass electronic dirge arrangement and the obscuring of one of the last centuries greatest female vocals.

I imagine Dusty may have wept when the final mix was played back to her… a full 5.00 minutes that not once allows this incomparable-songbird’s vocal to exhibit it’s clarity and power. An over-production of the worst kind..

Having said all that, THIS IS DUSTY and to complete her works is at the forefront of all Dusty-Fans minds. This is a rare-piece and will no doubt attract interest from “Disco” Jocks and collectors..

But what a very sad usage of a voice that no other British-Sister since, has been able to surpass..

Cissy Houston I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself / This Empty Place

Cissy in Philly belting out two shattering performances of 1970 SOUL!

Yes, as you can hear “proper” SOUL the type that leaves you in no doubt why you live to hear great music from great performers.. click the sound file and await a Diva lift, send and deliver two Burt Bacharach & Hal David compositions gorging on a vocal that demands your attention.

Topside is a juggernaut version of the cherished Dusty Springfield classic - the flip is a mountainous take on the 60s recording for relative Dionne Warwick.. Bob “Girl Across The Street” Finiz does one hell of a production job elevating both versions up, over and beyond the previous takes..

Two awesome sides these undoubtedly are - but you must wanna hear about “Condition, Condition, Condition..” don’t you?

Still sitting in its birth-sleeve this 1970 British DEMO is PERFECT in every way.. Mint minus cannot get any minter… if you know what I mean?

I have the number plate:

R 5OUL for sale at a reasonable price if anyones interested??????

I think a much cheaper way of having a personalised number plate is to just change your name by deed poll to your cars registration.

Don't want to be critical of the plate seller but i think he chose

the wrong place to sell that plate.

I would have been looking for someone with the surname Soul and the initials LS,

that's what I will be doing with mine, I would also expect to get a damn sight more

than 675 for it to be honest.

I'm surprised you don't get stopped with that plate Steve. Will NPR be able to read it?

I do get stopped occasionally but I`ve had that plate the best part of 20 years, way before ANPR. It was always fine then and I actually asked a few cops at the time and they didn`t have a problem with it also..... there are a lot lot worse so as usual, they can go and get F***ed!!

Kegs your right, my wife sold her dads number plate separately, 8LKK and we made almost 3 1/2 times that paid for on JM auction. Seller missed out there I think
