What's Your Favourite Album?

Guest Ranger

Recommended Posts

I've always found it impossible to choose a favourite soul record (or even a top ten) that doesn't change on a daily basis.

But what about a favourite album? is chosing a standout album any easier?

So what's your favourite that fits the following..

Consistent over all the tracks, a standout is a bonus not a necessity

Format immaterial, viny or CD

From any soul genre

From any era

Rarity irrelevent

Kev

And before anybody asks, no you cant have a 'Best of....' compilation

Chapter 8 - This Love's For real-Beverly Glenn

Produced by the genius Micheal J Powell

Nice call Petebanger!!!

I always thought Beverly Glen LPs were the buisness!!!

Remember talking to Terry Jones once, in the Spread Eagle Shoredich circa Christmas 87, and saying "Don't forget Terry Beverly Glenn comes but once a year"!

Cheers Paco

Beverly Glen churned out some great stuff-

Anita Baker-The Songstress another of my fave albums

Johnnie Taylor

Bobby Womack

Wasn't there something dodgy about the owner of Beverly Glen??

A gangster or something like that?

Cheers

A real grueller this one, I'm afraid...

Fighting it out for the Guys....

Lou Courtney "I'm In Need Of Love"

Bobby Womack "Lookin For A Love Again"

And a Catfight for the ladies.......

Sandra Wright "Wounded Woman"

Millie Jackson "Caught Up" Vols 1 & 2

They've been fighting it out for years, in my head, and I still can't decide on a clear winner!

Worse still, there are dozens of other strong contenders.

Hello Kev , Marvin Gaye " Whats going on" followed by his " Let's get it on " set .After that Sam Dees classic Atlantic album , and Luther " This close to you " .One recent purchase that I love , is Clyde McPhatter " Songs of the big city " - Mercury LP , early Soul but brilliant in my opinion .Best Wishes ,Eddie

Friction - The Soul Children (Stax)

Not a bad track on it.

If you're tempted to buy it don't buy the UK pressing as it's sonically far inferior to the US one.

Great album , I have one for sale on UK Stax ,and it's NM and fine

My fav's at the moment are --

60's soul - Going Back to Detroit - The platters

70's soul - The Spice of Life - Jerry Butler (Stop Stepping on My Dream , wow)

60's - Motown - Stevie Wonder - Uptight

70's - Motown - Willie Hutch - Fully Exposed

Best soul albums: Can't decide between Temptin' Temptations & Four Tops - Second Album.

Best record regardless of genre: John Lennons Plastic Ono Band.

Makes me cry everytime I hear it.

SORRY! This is Bjorn78 on Soulofs computer!

oooh, too many - Sam Dee's 'Show' has already been mentioned but another LP that I play pretty regularly, so it must be classed as one of my faves is The Impression's 'Young Mods Forgotten Story'

Lurve The Soul Children. Did they ever make a bad record!?

My faves would include

Marvellettes Sophisticated Soul

James Brown Apollo vol 2

Edwin's Soul Master

and almost any early Impressions album

Millie Jackson - Caught Up (followed closely by Still Caught Up)

Miracles - City of Angels

Ohio Players - Fire

Poppies - Lullaby of Love (yes really, but probably for sentimental reasons!)

Dryzabone - Conspiracy

And as already mentioned, Bobby Womack - The Poet (and Poet 2), Otis Redding - Otis Blue.

Tough one and ever changing!
