Dj Requests - Worse Ones

When I was djing last week at the I-O-W, some one asked me for 3 requests one after the other as I never had any of them.. I think this is the worse conversation i've ever had behind the decks the bloke/dancer was quite stroppy about it aswell..

any tales to tell, whilst djing that you couldn't belive at the time?

(No offense to Northerners as this was an individual)

Dancer " Can you play long after tonight for me"

Me "no sorry mate its only 12.30 and if I play it now everyone will go home, we got another 2and half hours yet."

Dancer " Can you play Here I go again"

Me " No sorry don't carry it about "

Dancer " oh what have you got  ... you got dangling on a string - chairman of the board"

Me "no sorry"

Dancer " thats the problem with you southerners you don't really get Northern soul.. Thats why its called Northern we understand it more up north, you just don't get the idea of it down south, you don't now what people want to hear  "

Me "yeh I know what you mean its a shame , it just seems down south we are more open minded with our music "

Dancer " yeh thats the problem  "

Not too sure how to take this, you say no offense to Northerners, it certainly has come across to me that way, maybe it's the way you have used smilies to highlight certain points

may be if you had stressed more that it was one individual you had a problem with, it may not come across as annoying as it is

'it just seems down south we are more open minded with our music  '

as above how can you justify the comment you made

Like I said it may just be me, but it has annoyed me enough reply

Im not sticking up for Mischief here (well maybe i am) but the northerner did start the north/south thing and it looked like a bit of tounge in cheek reply from Mischief to the northerner from how im reading it Paul.

Mischief has many northern friends and isnt racialist to them in any way even though they have gravy on chips, joke!!!

any way he wouldnt play the Snake for me either and he calls himself a open minded dj.

Bearsy

Alfreton November 1997:

Customer "Got Any Elvis"?

Me, "No, sorry, its a Northern Soul Night - did you know that?"

Customer "OK, no problem. in that case - got any Shakin Stevens"?

Me "Take a wild guess"

Customer "no need to be funny"

me " " (no answer but have a guess of my thoughts)

Sorry you took it the wrong way... never meant it like that... it was this individual person who said that southerners didn't understand northern.. to be honest I thought it was quite funny as he got so stroppy with him saying southerners didn't understand Northern and he meant it..

right after asking for chairman of the board (like them or not we have all moved on when requesting songs out havn't we?)....that was my point...

So not aimed at northerners at all.. I mean if you live in kent like me, East London is north as its over the river...

so was not a north south divide at all...

sorry you took it that way..

Have took a couple of little offending faces out and changed the northerner line... i've re-read it and as I say diddn't mean to offend anyone.. just meant it as what it is.. some one asking for a request then getting stroppy while i was cueing up the next record.. and looking back was funny at the time..

To be honest you would need a lorry to carry a collection big enough to cater for every request that you get when D.Jing. IMO a D.J should be allowed to play a set without people coming up and pestering for requests, a good D.J should carry something to everyone, and punters should be open minded enough to accept this. If I ever get pestered while D.J'ing I just say sorry don't play requests, and I hope you enjoy my spot, maybe the next D.j will play a request for you, I certainly wouldn't get into a debate over it.

Ooooooh I'm gonna have a massive list of requests to ask you for next time I'm in the same room as you

But then again, I'm a pain in the arse on purpose

I can't believe anyone would take anything Mischief says seriously!!! I've read his post three times now and even if I didn't know the Southern jessie, I couldn't find anything in his post that I'd deem offensive.

Personally, i think you got off lightly Mischief. I know that I-O-W lot (dirty scooterists) and all they normally want is The Snake  .

Anywayz... it ain't nothing to do with north or south - there are idiots everywhere. Whilst Dj-ing one night (with Karen Heath and Buey's wife, Becky) this guy came up to me and asked very seriously if I would play Ian Brown's "Stars". What a tool!

Best DJ box I ever saw was the one at Bar Shoreditch when Capitol Soul was in it's infancy.. you needed a 10 foot ladder to get up. Jet and I used to throw paper aeroplanes with our requests written on the wings.

--------------

Oh - and before anyone gets annoyed or offended about my scooterist comment - I'm married to one  .

Was asked once....Got any COMMERCIAL STUFF mate?,looked at me watch and said..The next DJ has loads,ASK HIM!

That's very, very funny! Was the next DJ Butch?

Mischief, I wouldn't take it to heart, I've know you for some time now and you always play a good set.

I could not make the IOW this year  , BUT when I do go to a scooter rally I now go with a different frame of mind than I do to a nighter, most of the rally going scooterists are quite happy to listen to for example Billy Ocean Red Light Spells Danger and the like, and only know the more "commercial" sounds like you mention.

Peter.

Are you sure he didn't have his Ipod plugged in, because At the Crown Hotel In Ryde That I was at last week, all I heard was crackin' Northern Soul. Oh yeah and Rufus Lumley "Stronger than me" But apart from that It was brilliant. You didn't play my request for Nolan Porter either.

Great weekend boys  .
