I'm glad the subject line for this topic says 'northern instrumentals' and omits the word 'soul' as as much as I don't mind the odd instrumental I can't see that a tune can be soulful without a vocal. My opinion....

Flip of George Lemons is infact the backing:

Do you think this is why he ended up dying in prison? I actually like the vocal. Just a thought.

can a instrument be played with 'soul' and if it can then could the result be classed as 'soulful' ?

think one of those 'each to their own' viewpoints ... maybe

And in this day and age where the funky side of soul is creeping in, for good or not. This one was a big Jebby play at the Mecca and Burnley Rose Room in 1972.

If you think of it as a (fairly loose) category, then the answer is yes eg. Watts 103rd st. rhythm band or Mike Cotton Sound.

Thought i would throw one of my 'Cleethorpes Pier' Cover ups into the mix. Never bothered to uncover it to this day. It is Riding High - The Just Brothers which is really  a track by the Ventures from the L.P.  "Theme From Shaft" Called  " Tight Fit"  ( U. S. United Artist )) Was also released as a single but the LP version is best, a better mix and plenty of Balls. Still love it and play it, Wonderful inst. that will not cost you a fortune. Enjoy! Rick

Could well be...both too fast for today's scene!

Another weird and wonderful slice of instrumental I've never heard played out and about in many years..

Not sure if dj's would ' cut to the chase' these days..

'Stone Fox Chase' was maybe what you're thinking about Used as Old Grey Whistle Test Theme

Indeed...

Thanks for the title...I've heard more obscure tunes played out....but this would be pushing it.

Then again, I could listen to a good harmonica player like sonny boy Williamson all day:)

Sorry, I meant, and Rick picked up, that the little sonny track is harmonica based , same as the old grey whistle test theme.

He knew the title...
