Autographed Bits and Bobs

Recommended Posts

Over the years I've amassed quite a bit of autographed bits and bobs. Not too big a fan of writing on record labels to be honest but when Jerry Butler signed my Mercury Demo LP I took the 'emotional hit'. It was The Iceman after all!

I guess because of my love of all things Harthon and DynoDynamics, my prized possession is this:

A Larry Clinton in a Jamie/Guyden Birth sleeve, signed by the late Weldon A McDougal III.

So... anyone want to share any nice bits and bobs with the rest of us?

regards,

Dave

One of the best Jazz drummers ever ..and still is even in his 70's ...

Had the record sleeve of my Ordinary Joe. Cadet demo signed by Terry Callier. To Steve your just a ordinary Joe, lots of love TC. unfortunately when I sold my records I forgot to change the sleeve. Still got the photograph of TC and myself though. Same sort of thing with Bobby Paris. Night Owl. Signed by Bobby to Steve a Night Owl. That also went they same way as the Ordinary Joe

I once asked Reggae legend Daver Barker to sign a record for me. Problem was, he used the same pen he just did to sign an album sleeve, a finger-thick felt pen and ruined the label. It now looks like a 3 year old scribbled on it.

Many years ago I bought a copy of Mike & Ray on Giant, described as "heavy wol". Turned it it's signed by both of them.

Apart from that I have three albums signed by Terry Callier. One of my alltime favourite singers. Still miss him....

Here's another possession I'd never part with. At the end of this lunch, Deon agreed to appear in UK but then had a change of heart. He passed away without really understanding just how revered he was by his UK fans.

Regards,

Dave

Inspired by members esoteric and amazing artifacts, ibegan rummaging through mine, signed Edwin "Soulmaster" LP with his Ric Tic recordings highlighted{and Getting them wrong!} Ihit on the Holy Grail; An autographed Fontana copy of "Something Keeps Calling me Back",By Glyn Ellis himself! He was performing at the Wigan Pier Club, Apost casino club which flirted with NS ,New Romantics and the "soup in the basket " set starring Numero uno mindbender.  I waited for him at the stage door, his massive ego now over inflated he told me the story of the legendary "Back" he wrote as amotown /stax pastiche, produced by "Supersonic Mike Mansfield {not the human rights lawyer} featured Dusty, madeline and Pat Arnold,He wanted it as an "A" side and it was now worth 50 quid! Back to reality also remember my autographed Casino membership card by Ann Peebles, yes she appeared an allnighter, not alot of people know that? LOL Johnny

Got a few things.......never write on labels though!  My prized possession has to be The Dells "I Salute You" CD, the booklet of which is signed by each member under their respective photo in the artwork backstage at Trentham.  Add to that the fact that I still have the "long box" the early imports CD's used to arrive in (so that stores could use existing LP racks to display them) for this album and I think that's pretty unique.

Here's an example from when I posted it on Facebook when the great man passed........"Good luck little brother" it reads.......  :-)

Those long boxes...............good decoration for the record room.......

As I am not an autograph collector, even though I have met many famous artists and a few musicians, I have never had any of them autograph anything for me.  But, I have several 45s and a couple LPs with the autographs of the artist/group members, or musicians on them.  The one I remember most, at hand, is Richard Street and his "New" Distants on Thelma Records.  It has the autograph of all 5 members written in pencil on the "A" side ("Answer Me").  These were the new singers he recruited, when he decided to not join his fellow Distants in moving from Johnnie Mae Matthews' Northern Records to Motown when their contract with Matthews lapsed in late 1960.  Most of the other former Distants signed with Motown as "The Temptations" in early 1961, and Street formed his new group near the end of 1961.  He first signed with Hazel and Robert Coleman's Thelma Records in early 1962, when A&R man, Don Davis, changed DaCo (Davis/Coleman) Records to Thelma Records (naming the label after The Colemans' daughter, first wife of Berry Gordy).  Street was first signed as an assistant producer and songwriter, and soon after, got an artist/group singing contract for his new group.

Unfortunately, I'm not with my US 45s now, and so, cannot post a scan of those interesting signatures.

At the Kent 25th anniversary I got Maxine Brown to sign her CD.  I also got the poster signed by Maxine Brown, Mary Love, Winfield Parker, Tommy Hunt & The Flirtations unfortunately it's all creased up in the bottom of a drawer somewhere.  Got Darrow Fletcher to autograph his CD at his gig at the 100 Club.  Also got Ronnie Walker to sign the sleeve of On and On at Solid Hit Soul, although to be fair, he printed his name so it looks like someone has just written a name rather than signed it.

Brilliant.  Reminds me of those photos you used to see in the barber shop.  "What will it be today, young man?"  "I'll have the Russ Winstanley, please".

"Something for the weekend sir ?"  , Yeah I'll have 20 Red & Browns and a couple of Mandys for Monday.

I had one of my bits and bobs autographed in half inch letters, sometimes it says H Melvn and sometimes it says Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass and Sharon Paige :D

Mine also has 'Philadelpia International Records' on the end :P:lol:

Great to see all the memorabilia that people have collected. Should start a different link for it all.

Got more football bits and pieces than music related unfortunately, but did buy a copy of the Women of Motown book once which was listed as signed by Claudette Robinson (wanted the book anyway so thought one with a signature was as good as any), then when it arrived, it was also signed by Brenda Holloway! Also found a signed copy of Mary Wilson's book in a local second hand book shop for a couple of pounds. Last 'Soul' signature I got was Ben E King (in the history of the Drifters book by Bill Millar) when he was appearing locally a couple of years back.

A few of my treasured bits

I got Jimmy Armstrong from Chris Cerf when I visited him in NY, despite knocking a bunch of his most treasured 78s off a shelf and smashing them all he still let me leave with it, Eddie Singleton signed it when I got to L.A. ... the past connecting in a strange way

The late Joseph Moore gave me his Tru-Glo-Town 45, never seen another, I assume it never got past the demo press as Gloria Toote licensed it to Verve Records

Ady sent me a test press of Little Ann ... seems logical that when she came to Cleethorpes it was only fitting that she should annotate the label

Andy

One of the best bits of memorabilia I have  seen....

Was with Robert Bateman in Ann Arbor.Michigan discussing what became a deal for purchase of the rights to "Exus Trek" and he a produced black and white Arita publicity photo of Jeff Perry signed  "With Love To Uncle Robert".

Robert actually produced a demo sung by nephew Jeff of  the JP ccmpositiion "Because Of You" and Robert got the demo  over to his friend Sonny Sanders at Brunswick, which led to Jackie Wilson recording it.

Robert and Sonny were partners in the SonBert label,, but no he did have a suitcase full of Yvonne Vernee 45's!!
