The Stephanye Label

Recommended Posts

I have a few questions about the Stephanye label release with regard to originals and bootlegs (more accurately counterfeits in the case of  Stephanye). I'm only referring to the three original, genuine releases not those later bootlegs that have no connection to the label.

1 Stamped or scratched matrices:  Is the situation similar to Ric-Tic and Golden World  where original releases may have either or both? I would assume that the same pressing plants were used so this is likely to  be the case?

2 With regard to later reissues: Manship only has one such reissue for sale, Roy Handy, and that's listed as a '73 release of American origin. Were the other two releases also reissued at this time?

3 Was this/(these) reissues authorised,  unauthorised or "grey area"?

4 Did it/they have vinyl/moulded labels like the Ric-Tic reissues?

I only have one of the three releases, The Prophets. My copy is styrene with a scratched matrix. I always assumed it was original but  I'm not 100% sure.

I'm pretty sure that both Shirley J Scott and the Prophets have never been booted, so the only grey area would be the Roy Handy, of which the boots are moulded, and originals are styrene.

As to the origin of those Roy Handy boots, I'm sure they are indeed American, probably from the ususal suspect, alongside SuperDuck

Cheers
Mick

If Roy Handy was pressed and released in 1973, you can bet that whoever released it didn't pay Gene Redd, Jr. and/or Ed Wingate for the rights to press it up, and that neither of those 2 were the ones who pressed up that "lookalike" of the original.

ORIGINAL COPIES are STYRENE

Stephanye_STP-334-A_DJ.jpgStephanye_STP-334-A.jpg

In the case of ROY HANDY STP-334

Both DEMO & Stock Copy have Identical Deadwax.
Both are on STYRENE and are Scratched - "ZTSC-107536"
With " T I " 180 degrees, scratched in the Deadwax.

Deadwax Width approx 14mm

I don't know if this will help further, but when you hold to the light
Exactly where the "6" is scratched there is a slight, but noticable dimple in the STYRENE.

Also a very Tiny Dot/Dimple Under the "C-" where the ZTSC-107536 is Scratched.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------* 70s Repro *
Stephanye_STP-334a_B.jpg
------------* 70s Repro *
The Repro is on Vinyl, Is a different shade of Green,
Scratched Matrix, and the DEADWAX Width is about 8mm.
The Vinyl is quite Pitted when held to the light.

The Boot has
"ZTSC-103536" Scratched in the Deadwax.
Instead of "ZTSC-107536"

ZTSC 103000 was mid 1964, while 107000 was early to mid 1965.  The '70s boot was probably done the same time as the non-Stephanye songs' boots, as they looked very similar in vinyl, runout and other aspects.
