I always used to wonder where the name Arthur Daley came from, for my personal experience when mixing with pals from ,"Down the Smoke", Daley when used as part of slang meant "Arsehole", as in "Ya can stick that up yer Daley ,I aint aving non  ov that geezer".Perhaps  when the writer was coming up with names for the charecters and knowing that "Terry's",boss behaved towards him  in a way that would make him a bit of an "Arsehole",swindling and taking advantage of the good natured Terry, then Arthur (Arsehole) Daley, might be a good name.Of course Arther (imself, gawd bless er indoors",though swindling and cheating became a loveable person to the viewers. Therefore "Daley",as in arsehole! if that what was meant to be  faded entirely  in connection and became simply "Daley" as in Arther Daley!.Due to the wonderful winning ways of," George Cole Bless Im's" personality shining through the role.

However I do believe the word "Daley", as in stick it up your etc, still translates as "Arsehole", among the folk of London and surrounding areas.

Gawd bless yer Arfur r.i.p ,you brought laughter too many in your long career.
