Rare Northern/sweet/funk. Lots Of Bay Area 45's

Recommended Posts

So many great records on this month's list! Tons of rare soul from right here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I can say without a doubt that this is the deepest selection of 45's I've offered yet. Take some time to check these out, virtually all records listed have MP3 soundclips (if anyone has trouble playing them don't hesitate to contact me and I'll figure out the problem). Also, I will be glad to email label photos of any 45s that aren't pictured here (the message board limits how many photos can be posted). See the bottom of the listing for info on grading, shipping, payment, etc.

The Apollos/Waymond Hall - Soul Funk-Tion b/w What Will Tomorrow Bring, OFFERS

Jamal 1005, vinyl looks VG with many light storage marks from being outside a sleeve. Plays more like VG++ with just some slight background noise on the intro to the Waymond Hall side. Apollos side plays pretty much perfect. Labels have writing and some discoloration.

Absolutely top-notch funk 45 out of Stockton, CA that surprisingly (given the high quality of the music) seems to be virtually unknown . The Apollos side is a killer uptempo instro with a nasty flute solo and horn section while the flip adds an incredible and soulful vocal by Hall overtop a slightly more downtempo version of the same basic song. Not positive but I think this may be the same group that did the song "Peace Still Is With Us". Serious offers only please. You need to hear this: https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...5B21E930158255A

The Milestones - The Joker b/w Juicie Brucie, $250

Andre 706, VG+ (plays better). Nice copy of this raucous northern instro.

Emulations - These Are The Things b/w Your Good Thing

Emulate 101, VG+ (light marks, plays nicely with slight surface noise in spots), $125

Without a doubt one of the crown jewels of Bay Area sweet soul. The little-heard flip is a cool funky group soul tune. Listen:

Sisters From The Ghetto - What Made You Change Your Time b/w Somebody

Emulate 102, VG+ (fair amount of light marks that don't really affect play), $75

Rare Bay Area female group soul on the awesome Emulate label. Listen: https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...5BEC89D490D401F

The Cre-Shendos - This Must Be Love b/w You're Still On My Side, $60

Aquarius Records 822, VG- (pretty noticeable surface scuffs but none are feelable or have a major effect on play. Record plays surprisingly well), labels have old owner's name written several times)

Another killer Bay Area sweet soul record with a good northern-style flip.

Rick Baker - That's Called Love b/w Got You, $150

Marquette 1000, VG+

In-demand early 70's Bay Area crossover. Listen: https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...8AB800A2D59AC53

The Jackson Sisters - I Believe In Miracles b/w (Why Can't We Be) More Than Just Friends

Prophesy 3005, VG+ (light marks not affecting play), $50

Not stretching it to say this is one of my all-time favorite 70's tunes.

Tate - Love Shop b/w There'll Be Some Changes Made, $125

Cloverstreet 102, VG (scuffiness from being outside a sleeve for a spell but plays great. Writing on label.) Listen: https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...12C44AA5BB7CB34

Howard Wales - Huxley Howl b/w My Blues, $100

Costal 101, VG to VG+ (lot of micro marks from being outside a sleeve, plays VG++)

Well-known but scarce deep funk instrumental. Listen: https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...8F15DE61BC6F822

Little Denice - Check Me Out b/w You Can Teach Me New Things, $85

Ruthies 10, NM-

Hard funk 45 out of Oakland. You can hear a soundclip on John Manship's site

The Magicians - Is It All Gone? b/w Why Do I Do These Foolish Things, $125

Villa 704, VG+, owner address sticker on one side. So many great 60's group soul 45s out of the Bay Area and this one is right up there. Listen:

Onyx - Break It Loose b/w Pt. 2, $100

Nia 73012, VG to VG+ (micro marks from being outside a sleeve, plays VG++, writing in pencil on label)

Infectious hook on this early 70's modern soul gem. Listen:

Eddie Simpson - Big Black Funky Slave b/w Lovin' Season, $50

Duke 470, promo, VG++ to NM-

Strong soulful funk sides.

Ron & The Embracers - You Came Into My Heart b/w Latin Blood, $75

Spectrum 2, VG++, some slight moisture damage to label

Top notch latin soul out of Los Angeles with a nice instrumental on the flip. Listen: https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...D7F43681BB89B60

Wendy Rene - After Laughter b/w What Will Tomorrow Bring, $50

Stax 154, NM-, beautiful copy of this majestic deep soul ballad.

Sonji Clay - I Can't Wait (Until I See My Baby's Face) b/w Gentle On My Mind

Songee 1002, VG++ to NM- (plays beautifully), label has some minor wear, $115

Sheer class and - a bit redundant to say - a classic for good reason.

Listen: https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...2A7A11273C429C7

Arturo Martinez - Me Cain Tus Modos (I Fall Into Your Ways) b/w Nos Queremos Los Dos

Discos A.M.G. 101, NM, OFFERS

Pristine copy of a rare, practically unknown and damn good northern soul-style number. Here's the twist: Spanish lyrics. The flip is in a sweet soul mode, also in Spanish. Fantastic production and arrangements, out of Richmond, California.

Listen: https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...B649555557CED4A

Mike James Kirkland - Love Is b/w Give It To Me

Bryan 9003, NM, $30

Excellent early 70's crossover/sweet soul

Bobby Reed - You Are b/w I'm Not Coming Back

Brunswick 55282, VG (number of superficial marks, plays a grade or two up from how it looks, label has wear), $40

Listen: https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...7DE10857D6376C5

Smoke - Oh Love b/w Love Let's Be Happy Now

Mo-Soul 1971, NM, $20

Another good early 70's modern soul nugget

Christian Plicque (w/ Berry Street Station) - Hot Foxy Woman b/w The Stripper

Le Cam 316, NM, $95

Totally killer and unique tune here that will appeal to funk and crossover fans alike.

Listen (and stick around for the breakdown at the two minute mark): https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...E86DEBE3BBC310B

Lady Margaret & Perry Smith - Tripping With You/Out In Space OFFERS

Gemini Records 3-546 (private Oakland label), NM, minor dish warp NAP

Great, obscure and unique modern soul sound here, check out both sides.
