Hello Northern Soulers!

Thanks for taking the time to read. We are running a BBC project called 'People's History of Pop' to tell the story of five decades of popular music through people's memorabilia collections. We would love members of the Soul Source forum to  get involved. We are collating photos, ticket stubs, diary entries, teen band recordings, wrist bands, rare footage and more - it would be great to get memorabilia from the Northern Soul scene up on the site. You can find the website at www.phop.co.uk - if you have saved stuff in your attic or under your bed, this is the time to get it out again!  For more information, the BBC page is at www.bbc.co.uk/peoplespop. Or just ask if you have any questions.

Many thanks, Zoe

Great that you've got so many memories and memorabilia. We don't pay people for their uploads - the copyright is yours to set as you wish when you upload, so some people set 'all rights reserved', while others are happy to allow their material to be re-used. There will be a BBC series out of the project but once we come to making films, depending on how you've set your copyright in the first place, and if we want to film with you, we'll get back in touch to talk about whether you're happy for us to use any material and will go through all the normal processes of licensing that as for any other broadcast. I hope that makes sense. You can find out more here too https://phop.co.uk/get-started/. Best, Zoe

Maybe you could start by looking through your own TOTP archives and finding 'Footsie'. :g:

Why don't they just ask Jazzy B to explain what a bunch of racists we all are?

The original poster posted what i thought was a fairly well mannered question in a friendly tone/manner

Am sure that many may have strong views etc on mainstream media but I just don't get this ott reply at all

Why bang on about a 5 second quote/clip from a bbc4  c4 documentary 12  8 or so years ago

If you want to bring up such serious topics then surely a separate thread be better rather than throwing it into this mean nothing thread/request in such a way?

Mike well said ... if people want to share memories or memorabilia with whoever it is , why not . The Northern scene has always wanted to keep itself out of the media spotlight and kind of jealously tried to hold on to its unique unorthodox position within all the music genres. I kind of get this to a point , but for the whole thing to sustain itself it has to attract new blood , a younger generation to create new memories , venues , records and clubs . Come on guys .. its not the Beebs fault , all media can and will distort things with either a bias or slant one way or another but Zoe's post was an open offer to all music fans to share stuff . Yes try and protect what you love , but don't close ranks and boarders to deter outsiders from looking in .. be grateful of what we've had and share . Its what life is about !

I've got loads of unpublished Wigan Casino photos if of any interest.  Jo Wallace was telling me of someone who bought these sort of things and then copyrighted them, can't remember who it was though, but some of these are belters and would look great in any book.

Thanks all for sharing your thoughts and to those who have shared that they have 'stuff' still. Northern Soul is a really important scene in British music/subcultures history and we'd love it to be reflected in the stories going up on the site. If you don't want to take part, you of course don't have to! Thanks so much, Zoe

Yep. Chalky has some good stuff from some old Echoes that I shared with him a few years back - Clifton Hall, Winter Gardens etc, along with some playlists etc. They're all on an existing thread somewhere - I'll have a dig round later Byrney.

Hope you're well boss.

I've got a set of scans of flyers from a few soul events in London during 1981-84 in one of my galleries on here, but not sure how to give you the link here. If you look for it under the title ' Seano - Early 80's London flyers' hopefully you'd find them.

Of course there's also the thread on scans of soul fanzines that several of us have contributed to, Shades of Soul being one, Beatin' Rhythm another, and there have also been uploads of the Pete Lawson mags. Not quick and easy items such as flyers, but terrific social documents of the time. Again, not sure how to give you direct links to these.
