Stevie Wonder, Britain 1966

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what date Stevie appeared at the Tottenham Royal Ballroom in Jan or Feb 1966 please? He was most likely backed by the Sidewinders. Also, Disc Weekly gives the following dates for him to appear at unspecified venues; Harlow, 1st Feb. Southampton 2nd and Birmingham on the 3rd, did these ever happen? He was on at the Plaza, Old Hill, Birmingham on the 29th. Lastly, he appeared at the Oasis in Manchester on the 23rd Jan but I've read two detailed accounts of him also being at the Top Ten, Belle Vue, Manchester but the Manchester Evening News does not carry an ad for that. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

It may not answer your question but some other background on his tour: Little Stevie Wonder played at the Ricky Tick Club in Windsor on Thursday January 27th 1966. The DJ at the club still plays around the Reading area and i remember he had an original flyer for the event. The club was a key part of the Soul scene in the Thames Valley at the time. Besides many soul greats, others such as the early Rolling Stones played there. Disappointing to relate that today it's a Brown's Restaurant so it has lost it's individual flair.

I could probably put you in touch with the DJ if it helps.

He also played The Marquee (London) on Monday 7th February plus a gig at the Cavern in Liverpool on that 66 visit ........

As EMI had fetched him over here to promote the "Uptight" 45, no doubt many of his shows here were last minute bookings.

It's also detailed (on-line) that Stevie played the Flamingo Club (London) nighter on 21st January 66 (supported or backed up by Peter B's Looners who had Peter Green and Mick Fleetwood as members at the time). Peter B's Looners (with additional members) soon afterwards changed their name to Shotgun Express.
