Computer Question - external writer/burner

Recommended Posts

We're moving from a big house to a small apartment and I want to ditch all my DVDs, put them all on an external hardrive so I can plug it into the TV to watch them. We plan to buy a new pc next month but it looks like new PCs don't have CD/DVD reader/burners anymore ? So can I just buy an external burner from say someone like Amazon, they look cheap at about £15.00 a go. Any recommendations ? Many thanks, Chris

I have a toshiba external drive, its basic and does what it says on the can. I have a Samsung external CD/DVD writer, again, it does what it says on the can, but like Chalky, I wouldnt be without my NAS drive, fantastic piece of kit.

Could you translate please Chalky ? :D

just google synology and then go to. Home page.  Mine is a twin bay drive and one drive is mirrored to the other for extra security (I thonk that's right).  You can get single drive and quad drives too.  Like crazylegs, wouldn't be without it.  But all drives can fail, do a bit of homework and look for the most reliable.

I used AnyDVD and CloneDVD to rip DVDs to my NAS, then use Plex to access them on a smart TV.  Worth paying for a lifetime subscription (search for Slysoft).  You can set the size of the video file (I normally use 4GB) and get rid of all the trailers and other stuff, so you're left with just the film at a decent resolution.  I use homeplugs to extend my home network instead of relying on wireless.  More reliable.

I use the DS214 (or 214 play).  Seamless backing up or simply for external storage.

can be used a s a media player as well to play your files on ypur TV etc.
