This week, we added three new 45s to our Louise Neal 45 Soul Auctions page, which features eye-popping, previously unplayed promo treasures from the Louise Neal Soul 45 collection. See the Auctions page for photos.

If you are interested in bidding, please visit the Louise Neal 45 Soul Auctions page for images and an explanation of the auction process.

  • Steinways, Oliver 2002 (promo), 1966.  "You've Been Leadin' Me On / My Heart's Not In It Anymore"  Condition: M- (M-(x)|M-(sw)|M-) Two very rare and highly collectable sides... both top-notch Northern Soul dancers.  This original 1966 promotional pressing (apparently, look-alike reissues exist, but this is the real thing) comes in a rarely seen Oliver Records factory sleeve. The labels on this new, unplayed promo would grade Mint, but one side has a small red star lightly stamped on it. The vinyl looks new but has a mild warp that won't affect play unless your turntable tonearm is weighted too lightly. The audio grades Near Mint, reflecting a few instances where very light surface noise is audible.   HIGH BID: $420
  • Lovelace Watkins, Sue 10-003 (promo), 1964.      "Dreams / Who Am I"   Condition: M- (M|M-|M-) Although it was actually this single's B side, the mid-tempo "Dreams" draws crowds as a top-notch track with a particularly sweet, crisp rhythm track. This rarely seen, unplayed promo copy has Mint labels. I'm grading the vinyl and audio Near Mint to reflect very light storage wear and very light (but mostly inaudible) surface noise, respectively. (Note: The Louise Neal collection has two more copies of this release, as I recall, though they have an "x" on one label. This is the nicest copy of the three, I believe.)      MB: $150
  • Hank Jacobs, Call Me 5385 (promo), 1967.  "Elijah Rockin' With Soul / East Side"   Condition: M (M|M-|M) The latin-tinged "East Side" was the originally intended A side of the rare and wonderful single, but it's the uptempo dancer "Elijah" that has Northern Soul fans lining up for a copy! There are commonly found reissues and bootlegs of this release, both stock and promo varieties. Rest assured, this is the original 1967 pressing, which has "C-5385-B RE Sm â–³66821-x ELIJAH ROCKEИ" in the trailoff wax on the "Elijah" side. (Remember, the Louise Neal collection ends at 1970.) This new, unplayed promo has pristine Mint labels and audio. The vinyl (styrene) is very close to Mint, but I noticed a small set of faint, superficial scuffs on one side, and the wax isn't perfectly flat (although it's within tolerance for new records). HIGH BID: $450

Other 45s still available for bidding include:

  • Invincibles, Warner Bros. 7061 (promo), 1967.  "Woman Is The Soul Of A Man / Git It"   Condition: M (M|M|M) Wow! Talk about great Northern Soul dance music! You can't go wrong with either side of this rare single, though "Woman" gets the nod from most Northern Soul enthusiasts. This new, unplayed promo comes in a crisp Warner Bros. Records factory sleeve. It has no notable flaws (even a very faint warp is hardly worth mentioning), grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio).      MB: $75
  •  Capitols, Portrait 109 (promo), 1962.      "I'll Drink A Toast / Fine Momma's Daughter"   Condition: M- (M|M-(sw)|M) Northern Soul with a strong RnB vocal group influence. Both of these rare sides are worthy additions to your Soul collection. FYI, this male vocal group isn't the same one that hit on Karen with "Cool Jerk." Note: This new, unplayed promo copy has pristine labels, and the vinyl would also grade Mint but for a very slight, no-impact warp. The audio is pristine Mint, both sides.
         MB: $65
  • Jimmie Raye, Garrison 3008 (promo), 1967. "You Must Be Losing Your Mind / For The Sake Of Love"  Condition: M (M|M|M) This rare single has a dynamite Northern Soul ballad on the A side and an irresistible dancer on the flip! This new, unplayed promo copy has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio).
         MB: $200

_______

Louise Neal was a black female disk jockey from North Carolina who had a 3-hour Soul/RnB/Blues show from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. During that time, she collected thousands of (mostly) promo 45s at her home from the many record companies she was registered with for receiving promotional material--ABC, Atlantic/Atco, Chess/Checker/Cadet, Decca, Brunswick, Shout, Stax/Volt, Fame, Imperial, Jubilee, Okeh, Sue, Philles, SureFine, Vee-Jay, Kent, Duke, Bell, Paula/Ronn, Rojac, Peacock, Motown (all labels), Veep, Capitol, Modern, Dial, Jamie and many others. A large number of these precious 45s accumulated unopened in their original shipping packages after Neal left the business and moved to New York in 1967. (Also during 1963-65, when Neal had earlier left town.) Most are highly collectable and extremely rare Northern Soul singles with book Louise Nealvalues ranging well above $100... a few above $1,000! Many are pristine--unplayed and with a bare minimum of storage wear. Others may exhibit very light storage wear and/or an "x" marked on the label. A good many come in their original factory sleeve, some of which are rare and valuable on their own these days.

The collection also contains rarities and classics of interest to fans of RnB, Blues, Girl Groups, Doo Wop, and various other genres of Rock.
