Charles Sheffield, Excello 2200, 1961. "It's Your Voodoo Working / Rock 'N Roll Train" Condition: M- (M-|EX+|M) We've had a lot of requests for this 45 from the Louise Neal collection, so I'm finally putting this beautiful copy up for auction bids. It's hard to call this recording Northern Soul... it's definitely more of an RnB rocker... but there's no denying its power, both on and off the dance floor. This is a copy Neal may have actually played, but not more than a few times I would guess. The labels are Near Mint — nearly flawless! The vinyl exhibits some storage wear and a few light scuffs, grading a strong EX. Miraculously, even though the trail-in vinyl has light surface noise, the audio on this single is strong, clear, and undistorted, with no surface noise or other imperfections of note during the entire track. Truly, pristine Mint audio... awesome! In case you were wondering... Yes, this is an original 1961 pressing (nothing in the Louise Neal collection is newer than about 1970), with (here, let me get my magnifying glass out...) the infamous signature "Sheldon" etched into the trail-off wax. MB: $700 Oliver Joy, Big Deal 134, 1967. "Don't You Let Nobody Tell You / You Know That I Love You" Condition: M- (M- (x)|M|M) From a small New Orleans label, this rare single offers two soulful ballads — One in a Deep Soul mood and the other leaning towards Northern Soul. This new, unplayed stock copy has been stamped as a promo, with "D.J. Copy" on one side and two stars on the other. Aside from the faintest of storage wear, the vinyl is pristine Mint, and the audio has no notable flaws, grading Mint as well. MB: $100 Tina Britt, Eastern 605 (promo), 1965. "You're Absolutely Right / Look" Condition: M- (M-(x)|EX+|M-) This rare single offers two top-notch Motown-Soul-style dancers — you'll definitely fill dance floors with this one! This beautiful promo copy has Near Mint labels... nearly flawless! The B side label has a small red star stamped on it. The vinyl has signs of storage wear and possible use, grading a strong EX. Fortunately, the audio is Near Mint; the audio is strong and undistorted, but I heard one or two light "pops" during play, which is why the audio isn't graded Mint. I note that the wax trail-off has what looks like "Bell Sound" etched in cursive lettering on it. There are lots of reissues and knockoffs of this record: Just remember, there's nothing like the real thing! And that's what you're getting here: The rare original 1965 Eastern promo 45 release. MB: $75 Other 45s still available for opening bids: Capitols, Portrait 109 (promo), 1962. "I'll Drink A Toast / Fine Momma's Daughter" Condition: M- (M|M-(sw)|M) Northern Soul with a strong RnB vocal group influence. Both of these rare sides are worthy additions to your Soul collection. FYI, this male vocal group isn't the same one that hit on Karen with "Cool Jerk." Note: This new, unplayed promo copy has pristine labels, and the vinyl would also grade Mint but for a very slight, no-impact warp. The audio is pristine Mint, both sides. Minimum Bid: $65 Chino Feaster, Blue Rock 4078 (promo), 1968. "You're So Much Woman / A Grown Man Cry" Condition: M- (M-|M-|M) The A side is that rare ballad that's perfect for slow moments in a Northern Soul set... A real winner! On the flip side, the singer lets loose with some Deep Soul chops. This new, unplayed promo copy comes in a crisp Blue Rock Records factory sleeve. Its labels and vinyl exhibit faint signs of storage wear, grading Near Mint. The audio, I'm pleased to say, sounds pristine. Minimum Bid: $90 Lovelace Watkins, Sue 10-003 (promo), 1964. "Dreams / Who Am I" Condition: M- (M|M-|M-) Although it was actually this single's B side, the mid-tempo "Dreams" draws crowds as a top-notch track with a particularly sweet, crisp rhythm track. This rarely seen, unplayed promo copy has Mint labels. I'm grading the vinyl and audio Near Mint to reflect very light storage wear and very light (but mostly inaudible) surface noise, respectively. Minimum Bid: $150 _______ Louise Neal was a black female disk jockey from North Carolina who had a 3-hour Soul/RnB/Blues show from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. During that time, she collected thousands of (mostly) promo 45s at her home from the many record companies she was registered with for receiving promotional material--ABC, Atlantic/Atco, Chess/Checker/Cadet, Decca, Brunswick, Shout, Stax/Volt, Fame, Imperial, Jubilee, Okeh, Sue, Philles, SureFine, Vee-Jay, Kent, Duke, Bell, Paula/Ronn, Rojac, Peacock, Motown (all labels), Veep, Capitol, Modern, Dial, Jamie and many others. A large number of these precious 45s accumulated unopened in their original shipping packages after Neal left the business and moved to New York in 1967. (Also during 1963-65, when Neal had earlier left town.) Most are highly collectable and extremely rare Northern Soul singles with book values ranging well above $100... a few above $1,000! Many are pristine--unplayed and with a bare minimum of storage wear. Others may exhibit very light storage wear and/or an "x" marked on the label. A good many come in their original factory sleeve, some of which are rare and valuable on their own these days. The collection also contains rarities and classics of interest to fans of RnB, Blues, Girl Groups, Doo Wop, and various other genres of Rock. We began selling records from the Louise Neal collection in June 2015, and it will take years for us to get through everything.
