I can't select a Top 5 and don't have a clue what I'll be playing on Saturday, but suspect it may be abit more mainstream dependent on the people there (customer is always right and all that) but this is what I played at the Capitol Soul Club in July and I'll definitely be playing some of these:

I rarely feel I get anything I really want, and this is not in any way an all time top 5, or perhaps even a current top 5, just 5 that I think are nice and 5 of many relatively recent acquisitions that I have not yet had the chance to play out over here.

Clarence Townsend - I Found A New Love - Clara (would probably make the top 5 of records I own if I sat down and made such a top 5, top sound IMO)

Eula Cooper - Let Our Love Grow Higher - Super Sound (top oldie, I love many of these groovy funky northern sounds)

Carol Anderson - Taking My Mind Off Love - Whip (classic Detroit, only bad thing is that it is stereo, but you can't get everything I guess.)

Tom Green - Endless Confusion - Action UK (good 1973 dancer, a bit spaced out in parts but stays on the right side of things. Does it exist on US? Was gonna sell it, but will keep it for now. I know this has been played a bit on modern floors but has it been getting any northern spins? Reminds me a bit of John Gary Williams "Whole Damn World..", only much better.)

Bobby Bennett - Alone With My Tears - V-Tone (personally not the worlds biggest fan of beat ballads, but this is a damn good one, if nothing else I needed a good ender.)

I think Joe Arnold is pretty good, but would not call it R&B, early soul is what it sounds like to me, sounds very much like "Stand By Me" with a clip clop beat added to my ears. Not sure it is super rare either, exists with both black and orange label. John Anderson sold a copy on ebay recently that went cheap (IMO) for £130 or something, I missed a copy listed flip up by Craig Moerer at $75 maybe a year ago. Don't think it is common though, and could perhaps become popular with some people. Dave Raistrick had an orange label copy at £200 at Prestatyn and Butch probably still has a black label copy at £250 in his sales box. Whatever the case, a nice early soul record and I think it is rare, if not super rare.

The Volumes is a personal all time fave record, about as good as it gets IMO. The Worlds Funkiest Band is also a real goodie I think. I guess you all know that "I Need Your Love" by Tim on Celtex has the same backing track as Lee Shot Williams on Gamma, perhaps not the same thing, but still a good budget "version" since it is a £5 - £10 45.

I got the one from John Anderson, as the high bidder pulled out. Been a fave for a long time, and couldn't believe I got it for £130 after being told It'd cost me £600-800........ Although it now seems this is a little high. Guide says £600 orange, £500 black I think. Mine's black, and yes it does sound like "Stand By me". Othe side's very good too

Link to comment

£500 - £600 is crazy, £300 tops for either version, probably less. The copies I mentioned had been there for quite a while and are possibly still up for grabs. I think it is still largely unknown and that is why it is relatively cheap, might change quickly with a few spins by the right DJ's though, as we all know.

 so's mine

Think you'd struggle to sell it on here.

Only few that know how rare it are the ROTR lurkers, of which I am a proud member! :D:lol:

Perhaps if you chuck a couple of scans and a soundbite maybe people would hear just how good it is...

Or better still, we could steal a pair of Soul Sam's gloves, turn them inside out, and stamp his fingerprints all over the vinyl (although being VERY careful not to scratch wink.gif ):D:lol: . If this won't get it some attention, nothing will!!! :D
