A little known band out of Mattapan, Massachusetts put together by Joey Lites and Bernard Franklin formed a cursory quarted with a pair of Franklin’s siblings which would later be known as The Energetics after including Herbert “Pee Wee” Jackson, Calvin Shepard and Tony Borders to the line up. The Energettics “You Make Me Nothing” is a highly sought after on the 45 market as with their sister group The Energies “How Many Tears” 45. Both kiddie groups were managed by Donald Poole Sr with songs penned by William Ebison and saw releases on Cobra Records in 1974. Originally signed to the sprawling Memphis concern in the fall of 1971, the Soul Superiors would cut two singles in Wooten’s modest Park Avenue Studio: 1971’s “A Great Day” b/w “Whatever You Do, Do Good” and 1973’s “Amazing Grace” b/w “Up Above My Head.” These 45s, the first credited as “featuring Bobby Green,” derailed the group, as another Memphis-based operation would scoop up the Green Brothers for a secular run. Signed to Stax in June 1974, Aaron and Bobby would record only one 45 for the Truth subsidiary before being caught up in Stax’s bankruptcy proceedings. Generally reworking the day's top hits into dance numbers, in 1975 with backing from the owner of a rough local biker club, Directory hit Lubbock's Harold Franklin Studio to craft two of their own. Billed as an entertainment attraction and as a vote-baiting rehabilitation project, the 13th Amendment's dashiki-clad stage show, with semi-improvised comedy skits between break-neck medleys, quickly attracted a following. A handful of originals took form, culminating in a December 1970 recording session at Baton Rouge's Deep South Studios. "Hard To Be In Love" b/w "The Stretch" was issued early in 1971 on the band's own Slave label. Later that year, the 13th Amendment signed with Queen Booking Corporation, which listed them alongside no less than Aretha Franklin and Sammy Davis Jr. Another manager joined up, and the pie finally split into pieces the band couldn't feed themselves on.
