Records That You Let Go - " Oops ! "

Guest Malc Burton

Recommended Posts

I was searching through some old files recently , and found a four - page sales list of original 45s I had put together from 1982 . Needless to say , reading it again after 24 years , and looking at the prices that were allied to each disc , the respective buyers of discs from the list must have clapped their hands more than the audience at an Edwin Hawkins Singers Concert ......

As stated , the list is a four pager , with over 200 sides listed : what follows is just some of the " bargains " I let go .......

Roy Hamilton " Crackin' Up Over You " ( RCA Black Issue ) ....... £ 5

Roscoe Shelton " Running for My Life " ( Sounds Stage 7 Issue ) ...... £ 6

Herbert Hunter " I Was Born To Love You " ( Spar Issue ) ....... £ 7

Darrell Banks " I'm The One Who Loves You " ( Volt Issue ) ...... £ 3

Terry Callier " Look At Me Now " ( Cadet Demo ) ........ £ 5

Tony Middleton " To The Ends Of The Earth " ( MGM Demo ) ....... £ 4

Pookie Hudson " This Gets To Me " ( Jamie White Demo ) ....... £ 16

Shane Martin " I Need You " ( Epic Issue ) ....... £ 8

Younghearts " A Little Togetherness " ( Canterbury White Demo ) ....... £ 10

There are many examples of bollock dropping on the list , but I have had to stop , as the tears from my eyes are falling onto the keyboard ......

Just before I get my coat , surely the biggest example of testicle releasing - think King Kong - must go to this ...........

Rita DaCosta " Don't Bring Me Down " ( Mohawk White Demo ) ....... £ 10

Chapper's has one in his sales box for £ 750 .

Such is life .

Question : What did you let go for silly money ?

Had you reduced it from £15, and written on the cover, 'On Brady's list for £20'??

If so it was me that bought it. (At Stafford)

I still have the cover, but had to sell the record a couple of years ago. I got a fair price from Eddie Edmondson, so at least it went to a good home

Not let go, but I did once leave copies of Anthony and the aqualads at £8, Frankie Beverly £12 and Tony Galla £8, and bought one of those dodgy Marvin Gaye - Lonely Lover 'acetates' for £8 instead!

sold a big box of records to a mate years ago, about 5 years later i asked him if he wanted to sell them back, which he did, however about 50 of the original box were missing, although the box was full the last 50 at the back of the box were disco records and deffo not in there when i sold the box, so glad to get most of them back i forgot about he 50 or so that had gone astray, soon prices started rising and i realised in the 50 gone astray was

both sandra phillips on gold broadway

both tobi lark on topper

charades on mgm demo

sharon scott issue

and a strange one that appears to have reared it head recently

little jewel on tayster :)

Otis Lee-Hard roe to hoe for 4 quid. Not a lot of people know that i had it. Buried on one of my lists, someone got a bargain, but i remember that at the time only 1 person asked for it, so it couldn't have been that known at the time. Everybody knows i let the Brooks Brothers go for a fiver, but the thing is, at the time it was fairly coommon in the west mids and there were a lot of copies about that were going for around 3-4 squid. It got poplar at Stafford and hence everyone wanted it. I had A.C.Reed at £4 but had 25 copies of it. Same with Lonnie Lester. I did Jeanette at a quid, a soul pack record wasnt it. Went big 30 years later. Anyway, everybody has probably sold/given away something that later has become an ultra expensive record, which has made NS one of the most interesting and for many a rewarding experience/exercise. :) The fact its still going and we can talk about the "MISTAKES" makes this scene all the more interesting.

I've only been collecting 10 years & have never had any of the really rare stuff but even in that short period of time prices have shot up so much that i'm slightly gutted what i've sold certain things for.

Darrow Fletcher - What have i got now £15

Gwen Davis - My man don't think i know £25

Clydie King - Soft & gentle ways £65

That's just three off the top of my head, i know i've sold at least 300 decent tunes probably for a lot less than they are worth now even though the prices have come down a fair bit.

God knows how you must feel if you'd sold stuff like Lester Tipton for peanuts, gutted i would imagine.

I really feel for my mate Wayne (if you're looking in mate :D ) when this topic comes up.

He had a really good collection which, due to misfortune in life, he had to sell, & unfortunatley just before the boom.

We were talking the other day, & he recalled letting an "issue" of "Youngblood Smith - You can split" go for £15 !! £5 of which he never recieved !!!! (hope you feel guilty whoever it was)

God knows what he would get for it today ? According to Kev Roberts Top 500 book it don't even exist !! ( alledgedly ) phew nearly forgot to put that

Does anyone know roughly how many were issued then ?

Just checked the Top 500 again definatley says Unless anyone knows otherwise, the record was never issued.

Any chance of a scan ? be nice to put the issue to bed, so to speak, as we were arguing about it existing the other day.

My most famous 2 minutes was a deal with Ian Levine at the Ritz All Dayer circa 1978.

in less than 120 seconds of madness I sold him

Don Gardner - Cheatin' Kind £3.00 (cleared the floor in my spot)

Inspirations - No One Else Can Take Your Place - Breakthrough £20.00

Utopias - LaSalle £15.00

and then i swapped Bernie Williams - Ever Again for Andre Gagon's "Wow" cause he had no more money on him.

He obvously felt he was "done over" cause the next deal he proposed to me, was over 20 years later..."did i want to buy some "one-off rarities" ?

Which were the...4 Vandalls, Jeanne & The Valamonts, and David Rhodes
