Never forget buying this brand new in Alan Fearnley Records in Middlesbrough the week it came on US import (along with a shed load of other stuff), we played the flip 'I Know' as a new sound locally, went to the Casino on Saturday of that week and it was played there also. Months later, Young Hearts was a UK chart hit!

Still love both sides

Remember reading a great story about one of soul music's greatest producers Rick Hall, who'd been trying to break Candi big on the US pop charts in the late 60's and early 70's with a run of fantastic " southern soul " style records but then let her go in frustration at the lack of appreciation from the US pop buying public ... then he described the moment he first heard "Young Hearts Run Free" on the radio , he says he "nearly fell off his chair" !!!!

(This track is) 30 years old but still never get tired of hearing it :D

Ditto biggrin.gif

And thanks to its commercial popularity, always a welcome oasis in the desert of music that usually gets played at works' Xmas parties & family weddings.

Anyone catch Candi at the Jazz Cafe recently?

This is a real coincidence, whilst talking to Banksy on Solar Radio abou 11 o clock last night i mentioned the "b" side of Y.H.R.F-----the sublime--"I KNOW"---and he said he,d try and dig it out for a future show.

weird eh!!!

Love and stuff to all

this is a wonderful record. it always brings a lump to my throat. lost youth, the long hot summer of 76, getting pissed on colt45 & southern comfort at the sunday night pub disco (having been at wigan the night before probably :-)

I think it was also an oasis in the middle of all the disco shite too.

I've gone back & listened to stuff like brass contruction, new york port authority, crown heights affair etc with a more open mind, but it still leaves me cold, just as it did then.

candi staton was always an exception. a great soul record with superb lyrics to boot.

nice one pete. :D

Top toe tapping tune - anybody who gets no buzz listening to this is dead from the neck up!

This is one of those songs that disproves the rule "Familiarity breeds contempt", no amount of hearing will lessen the sheer quality.

Good to see Ms Staton still recording, her 2006 "His hands" has been critically received, long may her success continue.

Don't know the track listing to "Cover me ", it can be bought on Amazon however

Equally wierd is that I played it on 'The Metropolitan Soul Show' last week. The show was recorded the previous Sunday!

I have two UK Warner Bros 45's of it...one is the standard green label, the other is a red label.I've always supposed the green one is the first, the red might be a later one when the record got really popular maybe?

I played it down These Old Shoes once and someone booed FFS! So I stopped the record, told them off and recued it to play again from the start :P

We didn't manage the Jazz Cafe but Cardiff at The Point was fantastic, mostly 7t's Southern Soul, with Young Hearts & that 90's track which I can't rememeber.

Paul's story reminds me of when I was working on a charity shop renovation around 1976 .

Radio 1 DJ plays this track , raves about it , then plays it again .I've never heard of that happening before or since .
