This should be in there Chris….. (Elvin Spencer - Lift this Hurt on Twinight)

Good shout Ivor, though the grittier Winner version gets my vote. Also on Twinight of course Annette Poindexter 'Wayward Dream', and the brilliant Notations 'A new day', arguably as good an example of the crossover sound as you would find

Re. Donald Lee Richardson - A good example of how 'Crossover' manifests itself for me from the period identified late 60's early 70's.....the A side is 'Crossover' to my ears b/w with a traditional storming stomper......

I would add to that tunes like The Attractions 'New girl in the neighbourhood' (Bell), the wonderful Jimmy Dotson 'Heartbreak Avenue' (Mercury), and Leon Haywood 'Consider the source' (Capitol), which of course has had lots of plays while not adhering to a traditional dance blueprint and should probably make a top 100

How about this one.I'd put this up there with Ty Karim in terms of quality. Not really that well known to the majority at the present I would say. So therefore not a contender for the Top 100 but, given time, I think its quality will become more widely recognised. Bizarrely, a 1979 release date but one of two killer tracks on the LP which are clearly much older than the rest of the material. The other earlier track is "Just Don't Love You" which was released earlier as by The Carbon Copies[rare one on 45]. The Carbon Copies features singer Jewell Bass, not sure whether this track is the same vocalist but whoever it is,she's fantastic ! See what you think if you don't know it…...

Great stuff Ivor - very Voices of East Harlem

A contender for the top 100 crossover sounds ever would surely be:

The Chimes    "The Beginning Of My Life"  Down To Earth

Although not as sought after as it more illustious stable mate The Kings Of Soul, this little cheapy in value (but high in musical quality) has continued to be a perinnial favourite.

Dave

Was thinking of this one myself - typical of that dreamy, floaty, slightly hippy kind of sound a lot of crossover stuff has. Came home with a bag full from Chicago in the late 90's thinking I'd found some super rarity but as you say only a cheapie

On 26/03/2016 at 09:14, Kegsy said:

Ok what we have in terms of Crossover is a particular "sound", maybe or maybe not from a certain period of time 68-72 say.

Once upon a time there was an underground allnighter scene that played QUALITY Soul music that was danceable, included in this scene were records that would fit, sound wise, if not time wise, into what is now called Crossover;

Sapphires     Gotta Have Your Love

Du-ettes       Every Beat Of My Heart

Formations   At the Top of The Stairs

and dare I say

Edwin Starr   I Have Faith In You

Later the scene adopted a more uptempo style and sometimes the Soul element was sacrificed and Northern Soul was "born". After a while certain D.J.s decided many soul records were being missed, due to the obsession with all things uptempo, and started playing QUALITY mid-tempo danceable soul, and the scene found it's original roots again.   Simples !

That's a really interesting post and I can see where you are coming from

For me, this is one of the best ever. Crossover ? I reckon so. I suppose for some, because its not rare, its of no interest but can you imagine the fuss they'd make if it was a super rarity ? Dig those funky colour suits. I think 'd go for the green one if I had the choice. I 'd probably end up looking like a leprechaun though ! That wouldn't be very cool would it….

Or this one, another massive personal fave and big with the old London 2 step crowd. Another that personally, I would include in the Crossover chart. Some will disagree but for me it has the lot. Available on 45 [Curtom in 1973] if you don't know, however, its the LP you need for the full Trombone-tastic mix featured here. Oh Lordy…..What a tune !

Had forgotten 'What good am I' in particular, would deffo make a top 100 IMO in terms of most played, most loved, etc

Yes but "What Good Am I"  by The TSU Toronadoes always been a Northern Soul record, so why does it need the new label of crossover????

That goes for all the other 70's Northern Soul records this topic is calling crossover?

I can see the point in calling records Crossover that are relatively unknown and have not been played on the Northern Scene, but not the ones that are already excepted as Northern records and get played in Northern Soul venues.

Whats wrong with calling them Northern Soul?

A lot of the track labelled crossover were IMO done so by dealers to cash in on an in demand genre.  Many of those listed I wouldn't call crossover as I understand it.

It isn't a new label, I've been calling it a crossover record since I first heard it 25 years ago - if you were calling it northern soul before that or any other time then good luck to you :D

Interesting to hear people's ideas of what "crossover" is. I remember hearing Dave Evison play Channel 3 'sweetest thing this side of heaven' on his radio derby show (I even remember it was a request by Jamie Saul RIP) in 1982 and thinking "this is like all those records I got by that bloke Tyrone Davis , wouldn't it be great to hear them played out !! "

Dreams can come true !!

Don't think it's been mentioned yet?

Bobby Reed The Time Is Right For Love

Dare I also suggest Diane Jenkins Towaway Zone? Played long before the term 'Crossover' was coined. Quite raw in its production considering its year of issue and somewhat out of kilter amongst all the sophisticated Philly, NY & TK 'disco' stuff that was taking off.

Hi Chris

It's an interesting question, but also as a couple of friends on mine in Germany have said on more than one occasion 'Why do the British need to make list of every thing ?" an equally good question. Also once a list is created, will that mean the prices of these will go through the roof as trophy hunters try to complete the set. Will you start to hear carbon copy sets at venues around the country as those DJ's with little imagination just pluck from the list ?

Finally the worst out come, as some northern promoters already do, imagine walking up to the decks to start your set and some idiot promoter saying 'Top 100 records only please'

That all said Johnny Gilliam - Room full of tears, has to be in there:D

I love looking at lists its fun.

can I add, Cornelius bros, and sister rose, too late, Gloria Scott, Marcia Hines, Corey Blake. Cant see them elsewhere and all were massive and typify the sound I think Chris has clearly defined. Yeah there are loads of Mecca tunes and modern northern oldies you could add but to my mind that misses the point.

In my opinion Crossover is a term used to describe a type of soul music that is different to traditional soul, northern soul and Motown that was played from the 60's to the early to mid 70's.It was introduced onto the soul scene at two major venues these being Blackpool Mecca and Cleethorpes pier /Winter gardens around 1973-1975 I would say a good percentage of Crossover records were a more funky type of sound albeit some were mid tempo , Examples of Crossover records are  Brainstorm:- Loving is really my game.  Frankie Crocker:- Ton of Dynamite. Skullsnaps:- I'm your pimp. Babe Ruth:- Elusive. Black Nasty:- Cut your motor off. The Matta Baby:- Do the pearl. Reggie garner:- Hotline. Everyone must have their own interpretation of what constitutes a crossover record. My views are based on actually attending those clubs back then and experiencing the music and the directions the music has taken over the years.

Regards Fred Ward

None of these records are Crossover.

My therapist once suggested I might be slightly obsessive and a compulsive list maker. I denied it of course.

Fantastic, thanks Derek - been meaning to do a round up so you have saved me a job :D

Constantly thinking of big hitters that haven't been mentioned - Walter Jackson 'Let me come back', Rita Graham 'My cup runneth over', Linda Jones 'What have I done to make you mad', for example

Going back to my original point, in terms of a Top 100 Chart of most played / most loved crossover sounds, what would be No 1?

I would probably still say Constellations 'I don't know about you' - any thoughts?

Cheers, Chris.

I'll have a couple of punts from out of left field. Was Call On Me Bobby Bland played out at the Wheel and such at the time? Lovely Calypso. Or how about the Traamps Scrub-board as the granddaddy of crossover 72 tune played as new and definitely not your 4 to the floor as the rest of the night would be.

What no Buddy Connor, the start and king of crossover for me.

That and these, you can say definitive, the end.

Bobby Reed - The time is right for love (Bell)

Willie Tee - First taste of hurt (Gatur)

Alice Clark "Dont You Care"

Although interestingly other than Buddy Connor the other 3 are played out more than any Northern Oldie, including Frank Wilson, ever was, with little comment or criticism. Interesting,.
