A few deep soul recommendations please

Dean

Recommended Posts

Genuine request: Could some of you more 'in the know' of the deep soul genre post a few of your favorites. I'm looking for less obvious, stuff I may not have come across, but if there's a more obvious stone-dead-favorite that you think is a must listen to then please post that too. Something to make me weep? appreciated, Dean.

Quite a few good DS cuts on KoKo from Luther Ingram & Tommy Tate ("School of Life"is a big fave of mine).

Lots more on other Stax labels too; Shirley Brown, Soul Children, Emotions, Ruby Johnson, C L Blast, Rance Allen, Sam & Dave, Sandra Wright, R B Hudmon, etc.

Also because you don't tend to hear them out anywhere or see them mentioned you forget other people know them

Ha! in exactly the same state of mind as Kev, if you want to hear the very best 'Deep Soul' come to 'Diggin Deep' a 5 hour Soul Session at the Red Lion, Todwick, between Sheffield & Worksop on 10th September 7:00 - Midnight.

Featuring yours truly, Kev Briscoe and John Manship playing out as we've never heard him before!

Gonna be special.

Jimmy Dotson - Heartbreak Avenue (Mercury)

Love Heartbreak Avenue wonderful record the intro reminds me of the Robinson Crusoe theme from TV in the 60s but soon gives way to a cracking slice of Soul music the flipside is good too.

Another one worth a mention is Joe Valentine I can't stand to see you go which is brilliant despite Joe sounding a wee bit like Phil Silvers on the spoken bit.

I bought this on UK 45 as a new release back in 69 ... it's got a very 'country style backing' (which would normally put me off ... but his vocals ...) .... ..... Joe Odom ....  on 1 2 3 in the US, Capitol in the UK (more about him on Sir Shambling) ... he (with the Assembly of Soul) used to be regulars at the Williams Lake Dance Club back in the 60's ...

Few more from me. Perhaps some leaning towards ballads rather than deep, but often on my playlist nevertheless.

Roy Lee Johnson - Take me back and try me

Johnny Baker - Accept me as I am

Cashmeres - Ain't no coming back

Fred Parris and the Restless Hearts - Ain't no use in crying

Little Royal - Jealous

George Jackson - Macking on you

Eddy G Giles - Love with a feeling

Elevation - Love won't pay the bills

Cicero Blake - Sad feeling

Spoilers - Sad man's land
