Ian, a good resource on here thinking about your other top five thread for finding music is the Playlist's section. There you'll find Djs from various events put up what they played over the weekend. You'll find some great tunes there and it will also give you an insight into venues you might possibly want to visit . You also get a broad spectrum of soul with play lists from the likes of the Horse and Groom Sunday Chill out where the music is not necessarily 100% Northern but covers other genres of Black Music .If you follow the thread you'll get an email when a new list is posted.   Guaranteed to find some fabulous music .

Well funny you should say that. Me & our peg went to Lowton Civic Hall's Northern Soul, our first ever NS nite last night. Totally, totally amazing. We travelled down the M6, a bit apprehensive not knowing what to expect ,and got there about 8.30. We pulled into the car park and there was only about 8 cars on there. We went in, paid our money and walked throught the double doors to the sound of horns and base. There was about 30 people there, so we got a drink from the bar, grabbed a table and sat down (near the dance floor as someone on here advised me to do). After about an hour the place filled up quiet quickly, the Dj dimmed the lights and the night took off. Someone esle said the music would never sound the same at home when you've heard it at a venue, and how right they were. Anyway as the night went on my feet under the table were shuffling along to the music. I think we'd been there about a hour and half and i hadn't even heard a track that i knew (which goes to show much good music there is in this scene). The missus said, "are you gonna get up", i replied "dunno all these lot are good dancers i'd feel abit embarressed". But the more i watched i noticed that no one was watching anybody else they were just in their own moment. So after about 10 mins i said "Bollocks to it, if one comes on i know i'm up". Three records later the moment came. So up i  got. What an amazing feeling of just letting yourself be ruled by the music. I dont know how it looked but after that i was up and down all night.

Hooked is not the word. I'll be defo going to the 21st anniversary In Feb next year and hopefully a few different ones before.

Thanks to everyone on here for their info and comments of support.

They'll be never any other kind of music for this lad again only SOUL !!!

Brilliant mate, so everything I said was spot on basically! Good move and imo you won't get a record much better than 'She'll come running back' either!

you cant go wrong going to places like Lowton and others people have mentioned , now you have taken the plunge I will give you a tip , don't get into vinyl its contagious and addictive and will bring you down financially and mentally and could lead to making you think you could be a DJ ,:hatsoff2:

You don't need to be helped any longer.  You've always had the power to dance.  Those magic ruby Solatios will take you onto the dance floor in two seconds.  Yes, and Toto too.

I've read all the posts in this thread.....it's fantastic you've been to your first do and had a dance, it's great isn't it?.. No one watches when you dance or judges you, it's all about the music....it must be amazing to hear lots of these records for the first time. Good luck to you and enjoy it, it's a wonderful all embracing scene, kind regards....Rob

Hi Ian

met Dave Nowell at the Casino mid 70's.

we used to call him Immaculate Dave, because that was his favourite phrase. Kept in touch over the years, and when he was writing his book he asked me for some comments on the scene at the time, and about my magazine Love Music Review.

i sent him a long email, and when the book came out, the email was there in its entirety. That was a surprise, a nice one though.

I've started to re-read the book again, which bit was it ?

Hiya, do your own thing, forget the copying of moves, looks only good if right track is playing, prob  would be ' right track'  nothing worse than seeing someone with practised moves to wrong track,  if you ain't carefull you'll end up with baggy trousers etc etc. if the music moves you that's great, enjoy, cheers
