This England question about music

Was the music used in the documentary footage (post-edit) different to the tracks the dancers were actually dancing too in the shots?

I wondered about this  too, don't look like it to  me, cant imagine the producer was arsed about little details like that, probably more interested in the stilted social perspective.

Interesting question. Having seen the original programme and a video-tape of it many times, all the tracks were Wigan classics from the heyday. The soundtrack sounds loud and clear, rather than 'live' with all the crowd babble. The clips of the dancers are unlikely to be synchronised with a dub of the actual track fresh from a studio tape - that seems like a lot of extra work. So, I would guess the producer reached for obvious tracks by Judy Street, MVP's, Popcorn Wylie etc. Just an educated guess really but it would be good to hear the real story from a TV connection.

The out takes are on Youtube as well somewhere.  I bought the video when it was released a couple of years ago and was disappointed the out takes (or some of them) were not featured on it.

Yep, it's Wardie and he's on Soul Source. His spot in the limelight is him doing just that, being in front of the camera which until then had been focusing on Pete Ricketts. Credit where it's due, great bit of footwork... got to be a 70's shuffler.

This i think is Dave Wards post from an thread few years back confirming that the track they were in fact dancing to was Tonne of Dynamite--- Frankie Crocker

The P-Funk T shirt was worn for a couple of nights only, and I don't think anyone ever called me P-Funk to my knowledge...I was known, like most of us, by first name and where you came from, I was probably  'Dave from Leyland'. 1977 was a time of change, the Casino promoters started to 'ban' certain new records because they were too funky. I though that was wrong, hence the infamous T shirt. I liked the way Pete Ricketts danced, but never spoke to him, a nod, or a wink, at the end of a great dance record, was about it. I didn't rate circus acrobatics or side-to-side stomping, although these are the dancers who feature on 'This England'. I hate the clips on You-tube, they are out of sync. and backed by the wrong music. (It was Ton of Dynamite) ! Who was better, I don't care, I danced for me. If people enjoyed watching, that's a bonus. Best move...that snap back heel turn! Regret...that I couldn't spin....If I could have built that in...I'd have been there, done that, and worn the infamous T Shirt !

Blimey dazz, you're nearly as old as my phone.  Wasn't there during filming but remember people not being happy about it. When it was first shown on itv I went work in the morning and getting jip from my foreman saying 'bloody hell pete, you told me you were great dancers, all you do is spin' then lecture about rock n roll, jiving, women etc.  cheers

Yes Paul, the music was dubbed over. The filming lasted for a good few hours so you couldn't say they were dancing to a particular track. A lot of folk wouldn't dance at all. Would you if you were smashed off your box and people were shining arc-lights on you? Terrible, terrible night. End of an era, etc, etc

As suspected, far from a normal Saturday/Sunday 'Niter. Many regulars stayed away. The smaller-than-usual crowd numbered unfamiliar faces. The dancefloor was brightly lit and clusters of on-lookers were standing around. The cameras homed in on anyone spinning around then falling down. Such were the theatrics, the music at the time and later when dubbed, was irrelevant as the acrobats threw themselves to the floor when the camera approached rather than at a significant break in the track. The programme might have titillated some nostalgic Northerners but it was a travesty for the Casino and a slur on the Northern Soul scene that the media keep trying to match even today.
