Attic, Mansfield 4th Nov 06

Recommended Posts

We just want to say a massive thanks to Steve, Dean, Kev, Gary and Mr Mark Bicknell for the absolutely brilliant night at The Attic last night. Great atmosphere and tunes to die for!! On the way home we both said that this is what a northern night is all about and how we remembered them from 30 odd years ago. Some tunes you were very familiar with, some you thought you knew and some you just got up and danced to because you liked the sound of them!! We can truly and honestly say that this is the best night we've been to in ages and if you missed it then you really did miss an absolute treat.

By the way Mr Bicknell I'm the lady who asked for The Houston Outlaws 'Ain't no telling' which you didn't have with you.. Perhaps you could play it on your show??

Anyway.. Just keep on doing what you're doing lads.. You've obviously hit on a successful formula.

See you next month (or at Pilsley perhaps)

Thanks Chris and Sharon, appreciate the supportive comments. I think we're all just coming down at the moment, or in some cases sobering up. We've been in bit of daze all day, looking at each other and grinning "What a night". I am sorry for those who missed it, but given the size of the venue I'm really happy with just the number we had in. We wanted to create a northern soul social venue when we set out on this venture and I think last night it worked really well.

Apologies to those in early, I didn't think my spot was very good between 19.30 and 20.30, I was having a running battle with one of the decks and sounds that usually play good skipping, and wanted to save some bigger sounds until later when we'd filled up. In the event Steve and I decided to ask Mark if he wanted to play through as the night was in top gear and we wanted to keep it that way. I think everyone will agree we made a good decision there. Is there a record for the longest guest northern spot? Well done Mark, absolutlely top spot.

I thought Kev and Garrrry both did good spots on the night. But biggest thanks (Mark excepted) must go to Steve (the worry) Lydon, the drive behind this night was really down to Steve and his vision for a night like that.

I think it will stick in our minds for some time to come.

You will see us at Pilsley - I have never yet had a less than great night there and am always telling people so - The best night in Derbyshire (2nd in east mids !!??). It was good to see you both there, and to see Chris dancing with his shoes on!

Thanks to all who supported us, we had a great night and hope you all did. See you around, Dean.

Thanks Charlie - I'm getting a flavour of what you like now, Susann Farrar - The Big Hurt; Leslie Uggams - Don't you even care; those big vocal female perfomances, we have something else in common!

Thanks for your kind words, you and Alison have been there from the start and are really valued guests. I'm glad you made it on Saturday, I would've hated you to miss that having supported us this far. Saturday was very special.

No comments yet from Steve!!!! Is he at last lost for words, or has he finally been banned from the PC to prevent "unauthorised" purchases from ebay?

How do we follow this? We just keep on keepin on, bring on December with Cressy (or his evil twin Gressy). Hope you can make it Charlie.

A solid thanks to all who made Saturday so special, stay with us. Best wishes, Dean.

As usual we made the long trip up from the beautiful south and I have to say ( forgive my ignorance here ) that I didn't know who Mark Bicknell was or what to expect soundwise.

Well I do now - Great sets as well from Dean (liked the Leslie Ugams), Garry and Kev and apologies for missing yours Steve.

I feel that the Attic really took off on Saturday and I'm already looking forward to December.

Thanks again Mark and the Attic regulars for a truly memorable night.

Charlie

Hi Charlie

You and Alison truly are dedicated soulsters!

You come all the way from cambridge? is that right ?

Gary and I have attended every one since september and have really enjoyed it

Do they have many soul nights your neck of the woods?

Just landed back in Manchester after a fantastic night out in Mansfield, the welcome and hospitality was awesome, a 90 minute spot turned into two and a half hours and it was a joy to play records for such a nice bunch of people, the breakfast was legendary, the company was out of this world, count on me returning to The Attic in the very near future, big thanks to Steve, Dean, Kev and Gary, a small venue that very quickly will gain a huge reputation.

Playlist to follow.

Regards and thanks - Mark Bicknell.

 well, the missus about summed it up for us with her ealier comments, but i want to say, whoa, i haven't been to a proper soul night like that for years. well done to the lads, great night, great atmosphere and fantastic northern music all the way through. Got any doubts, then read Marks play list, that will do it for you, unless of course you can't see by Edwin Starr and My Weakness is you or the Contours, A little Misunderstanding, great records, ruined by the 'this is what I danced to when i was on the northern scene' bridgade.

Reminded me of the days when Northern was truly northern. Mark you are a legend in your own time, please come and dj at Pilsley, anytime whenever you want., Sorry couldn't make the party after but was at Twikers for the big match on Sunday afternoon, should have gone to the party instead.

Thanks to all :yes::huh::yes::yes::ohmy:

Heh you all - I'm lovin this thread, it's like some real brotherly love thing going on, Attic, Bentinck, Pilsley. F' d politics, we all seem happy doing what we're doing.

Just had a text from Steve about a mini-bus to Pilsley!

Chas - if you're around on the 18th I can give you directions or check with Steve if there's space on the bus. Pilsley and Bentick are more your proper soul clubs, where the Attic is more a soul social - and we're happy with that.

Hope to bump into Mark B again soon, genuine top dog good bloke, a real pleasure to meet you Mark.

Looking forward to Dec Cressy.

This scene is alright isn't it.

Heh Mark, I thought that's what you were meaning. That is great news, Pilsley is a really good place. That hill can be a bit bleak in December though. Never had anything less than a great night there. Barry and Chris have to put up with Steve craning his neck over the decks all night, occasionally demanding "the other side - flip it over". I think he's picked that up from you! Great hosts. It will be good to see you, looking forward to it, Dean

Nothing wrong with a bit of "Two For The Price Of One" lol

See you soon - Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Had a problem with the cable modem but I'm back now.

WOW what can i say that hasn't already been said, its now Wednesday and I'm still trying to come back down to earth,so at the risk of a bit of repetition I'm going to anyway:

I'd like to thank everyone who has supported us from the start, especially Chas & Alison who after a chance meeting at Sweet Soul in Newark have made the journey from Cambridge to Mansfield every time we've been on - hows that for dedication?

Also Mandy & Gary who have a slightly shorter journey from Ollerton :) Well done with the exams Mandy thumbsup.gif and tell Gary he's got a problem  he'll know what I mean.

Christ this is starting to sound like an oscar winners acceptance speech!

Also big thanks to Mak, Mart, Neal & Karen Parkes who are behind us all the way.

I was blown away by the comments from Chris and Sharon from Pilsley, thanks guys

We'll be there next week, well done for getting MB down.

Now on to the real star of the night Mark Bicknell, words fail me to be honest - what a fantastic 2 1/4 hours of soul music, you'd have to go a long way to beat it. You know you dont need another invitation to come back down here mate  You'll need a bit of practice at holding your beer for next time though :D

Like Dean said its not bad this scene of ours is it?
