What Ever Happened To The Friday Night Allnighter?

Just browsing through the events section and it suddenly struck me how few Friday night allnighters there are these days.

In fact, there's only Wilton I can think of (apart from Friday nights at weekenders).

Being a Monday to Friday worker I always used to really enjoy an allnighter on a Friday brecause it was a cracking way to end the sh#tty week at work and it also gave you two whole days to recover before you had to get your 'normal' head back on for work.

Back in the early to mid 90's there were several, especially around the Manchester area (Droylesden, Hyde, Bury etc.) and all were reasonably well attended considering the low numbers on the scene at the time.

I reckon there could be an untapped market waiting for another chance at a Friday Night Allnighter.

COME ON PROMOTERS! GIVE IT A GO! I for one would be there!!!

THE big Friday all-nighter finished when the Monthly oldies @ the Casino finished. My opinion anyway. That was the only night of the month when you could almost always guarantee to see all your mates in one place.

Last one (again, apart from weekenders) that I used to go to was the one in Birmingham, was it Q11, think Dave Rimmer would know. Cool venue sort of amphi-theatre, but remember probs with security. Suppose it's just not traditional anymore

Odd observation. Wigan oldies allnighter was maybe the pinnical of these. Now days traffic!!!!!! you try and travel, even late at night anywhere on a friday. Buy the time your home, just the thought of going out again into that traffic!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you mean mine was an odd observation Dave? Good point about traffic, bet if someone could be asked they'd find traffic has increased hugely over the last 20/30 years.

Last Friday night event we went to was the Orwell. Had to take the afternoon off work to get there at a reasonable time and we just don't get enough holidays to take time off every week. Left at lunchtime and the journey took 4 1/2 hours ! I hate the motorways these days  Not so long ago it took us almost 7 hours to get home from a party we went to in the North West because the M6 was partially closed.

Not got the energy for an allnighter on a Friday personally - I'm sure others have, but I'm too wiped out after a week at work. That living for the weekend mentality might still be there in spirit but the body isn't so willing these days.

Unless an event has a really strong local support and doesn't rely on many travellers, it's a daring promoter that risks his dosh on a Friday night event that attracts older people with families and work commitments. Good luck to the guys that can pull it off successfully.

No I was reffering to my own, as maybe not the first thing that comes to mind, but it does have a great affect on friday traveling now days. Last friday I had to pick up people for the event on sat, from the Stanstead airport from Oxford. Only route was up to Milton Keynes and across country via Royston. As I crossed over the M40, M1and A1 all were a car park. When we returned by same route about 8.30pm little had changed.

Any promoter wanting to run a friday event needs to offer free teleporting. biggrin.gif

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Yeah, take your points about the traffic and the being knackered after a weeks work but I've always felt that it's worth the effort to kick start the weekend.

It always makes me chuckle when you come out of a Friday night Allnighter just as 'normal' people are starting to come into town for Saturday shopping. The looks on their faces are priceless. You always get that look of 'What the hell has been going on in there?' and 'Who the hell are this bunch of sweaty wierdos!' It's that secretive, underground element of the Soul scene that makes it special for me.:D:yes::D:shhh:

Thanks to Quinvy for the Burnley Allnighter info. Looks VERY interesting. I will take a look at events lookback and may see you there!!!!

Sure beats staying in and falling asleep in front of Jonathan Ross (AGAIN!! )
