Can anyone recommend any books for Christmas presents. I love reading autobiographies of soul artistes and labels. Which ones have you read that you would recommend as a bloody good read. Current ones would be good but are there any old issues worth hunting around for?

The late and great Derek Allen, accumulated a huge and interesting collection of "black music" books.

I shall be putting all of them on the site in the first week of December. Most are deleted so you should find something there to grab you.

How about Blues & Soul no 1.!!

We are auctioning this amazing rarity in MINT minus condition this week..finishing in December..with # 2 #3 #4 #5 following closely behind..

"Upside Your Head: Rhythm & Blues On Central Avenue" by Johnny Otis. A 'must own' as far as I'm concerned. There are always plenty of copies available on Amazon.com, and cheap (although being a book, postage rates are a bit steep). I recently bought one for a pal for a dollar fifty.

I also always recommend another excellent Black Music 'out of print'er - this time a novel, "The Day The Music Died" by Joseph Smith (the real name of the West Coast R & B and Soul man, Sonny Knight). His writing style takes a bit of getting used to, but it's a terrific read once you fall into his rhythm. Again it's something that you can get on Amazon.com for, quite literally, pennies. I bought one for a mate for five cents about a year back!

Other than that, the massive 'History Of Beach Music' book that's just come out looks wonderful. It's called something like "The Days Of Yeeeaaah Baby" - but it apparently weighs a ton, so postage might be prohibitive...

Hope this helps,

TONE
