At Yate not only did you get the three claps at the appropriate spot in the record, you would then imediately get an 'echo' three claps, and then everyone would clap once together. When you are 15, at your first allnighter, and watching/listening to all this, its impossible not to be sucked in. It is also a much under-rated dance move. As we are all getting less agile and the backdrops and swallow dives are becomming less and less (ahem) graceful, a good clap is a wonderful thing to do, or watch. Its law, that you arent allowed to purchase a vintage Lambretta or Vespa, until you have learnt to clap along to that one, without stoping dancing. Sadly Panch from Bedford loves to clap out of time, as Winston will testify, to put everyone off so a slap around the head if he does it when you are in the venue! I encourage clapping at every venue I attend, and at the Plinston it's a joy to behold a full house clapping like thunder to records. Just putting a set together for one of the audio sites - may make the theme "clapping songs" this week based on the suggestions from the good people on this forum. Also, I have a superb tape (copied from the late Paul Fisher) of a storming Butch set at the 100 Club about 5 years ago - superb hand clapping!! Particularly on his Jerry Williams c/u, Temptones c/u and his ender, Eddy Hughes "Soul Searcher" (then c/u as George Lemons). Not such a dead art in the South. There are two types of clapping along. Both require Winston's large arm movements and thunderous bringing together of hands. Take 'Crying Over you - Duke Browner'. The opening bars are dramatic and there is a pause. This is where dancers clap. (bear with me 'duh duh, duh duh, CLAP') Or 'Epitome of sound - You dont love me' when there are three rapid beats, dancers clap to each beat. Sometimes the way is to clap on a beat, on other's its the missed beat. I think thats the one Kolla is refering to in 'Time will pass you by'.
