Bottom & Company

Gonna Find A True Love / You're My Life

Time to relish Soiul magnificence.

Here’s a beautifully clean copy of one of the very greatest 70s soulful dance 45s ever made, pre-disco and dripping with the quality that only great teams can create.

Step forward Muscle Shoals trained Terry Woodford (aka Clayton Ivey) with another great song to add to his already impressive discography teaming up with another familiar name Jimmy Helms and grafting brilliance with the prolific Mike Lewis crafting the impressive arrangement, for the rare Soul followers to drool over..

Amazingly this gem, started as a flipside, which makes it even more challenging to land, as the promo “You’re My Life” does not carry the magnificent flip. Having said that you can hear why at the time “You’re My Life” was preferred to lead with, it is also is a darn fine dance tune in it’s own right..

But falling short of the uplifting dancer on the flip, which in recent times has disappeared from view, demand is rising on the back revitalized DJ spins, I’ve heard this beauty a few times recently, the dancefloor appreciation was huge, the bar-leaning chin stroking older folk (me) just lapping up it’s second lease of life..

Top-quality will always rise up again, a replay that is perched to go bigger than ever before…an AWESOME 45 that like good red wine, it has been enhanced by being laid down for a time…

Patti Austin

Take Away The Pain Stain / Take Your Time

an unbelievable 1966 South African tri-centre press

INSANELY RARE!!! and in sublime condition!

What really matters to a dedicated vinyl-collector is to elevate his collection to the highest possible degree, by securing those records that so rarely come to market, the window of opportunity for ownership maybe just a once in a lifetime fleeting chance.

Some Northern Soul classics can be art of startling beauty, quality and stunning rarity. Before you today is a showstopper to be proud of, an eminent timeless classic of the highest order that on any of its 60’s original imprints is a record to be treasured within your collection…but a tri-center South African press takes NS original archiving to the summit of possibilities.

With there never being any U.K. 45 releases of Patti’s highly regarded teenage sessions with Henry Jerome in New York any variations on the USACoral 45s are considered fundamental goals to attempt to reach.

This copy is in glorious condition, some fine faint surface hairlines only revealed under strong light, original tri-centre fully intact, brandishing two unique unblemished labels.

A breathtaking testament to a young lady who provided not one, but s string of 45s that wowed the youth of Northern Soul during the 70s, this title being considered the Jewel-In-The-Crown…

Listen to the two sides that arrowed Patti Austin into the hearts of The all-niter congregation, embedded there for over 40 years…

Wishing to own top-NS-classics in their Beyond-Rare attire … it don’t get any more satisfying than this.

Primitive

Sister Africa / You Are Everything To Me

Unlike the very few other copies of this South Carolina indie that have surfaced this century, this example does not have edge warps or vg- gouged vinyl.

Before you is a clean copy, that if angled under light reveals a few hairlines none of which register on the stylus on the A-side. The gentler flipside an occasional tick but nothing to divert you ears.

So now the condition is confirmed as beautiful by comparison we need to introduce this slab of Charleston FUNK n’ SWEET!

An inventive fusion of Psyche, Jazz & Funk; Norman Whitfield inspired maybe but within the Wah-Wah, blasting-Brass and vocal chants, the recording carries some standout moments of pure genius; setting this session apart from anything that has gone before it.

In the 3:15 of this potent dancer there’s a instrumental break, that stopped me typing, fantastic meltdown of guitar picking, burping horn, then a trumpet intrusion of the finest quality, elevating the tune to new heights…

Having said all that, i adore the mellow flipside, a gentle vocal-group trip introducing different leads cradled by the rest of groups harmony choruses. A superlative Soulful love testament of the sweetest kind..

Inspired Funk backed with as Sweet Soul trip of real strength..

LOVE IT!

Velvelettes

Needle In A Haystack / Should I Tell Them

The autumn of 2006 was the last time this iconic Twisted Wheel anthem adorned these pages as a 1964 British Red & White DEMO.

We all knew the words off by heart, as “Doodle lang, Doodle Lang” rang out in every “Youth Club” nationwide on a Friday night.. one of the motivational signposts the journey defining our musical direction and nailing many of us to a lifetime of searching for that neck tingling sensation we all felt as soon as we entered the club and Motown resounded around the room…

Motown and Soul were the only things, as a 15 year, that had the power to divert my mind away from French Kissing, double hook bra’s and fantasies about the gorgeousness of our new Geography teacher’s legs..

Motown was the cure for everything… back then.

So welcome back you beautiful Red & White, the sight of you always catapults me back to those wonder years, that nurtured my musical taste..

Remember.. finding a “Good Thing Girl..” like this elusive Red & White Demo is akin to…”Finding A Needle In A Haystack..” an 11 year absence from these pages underlines that age-old saying..

This copy has fine clean vinyl, housed in a birth sleeve. A small mild rub scar just above the title on the A-side (see scan), light faded name on the centerpiece on the flipside are this offerings only pimples on this face of vinyl-artistry.

Chain Reaction

Search For Tomorrow / Say Yeah

Horns and guitar riffs dominate the intro until a congregation of male vocals glide into your ears on a mission to make you dance.

That mission is never in doubt, as the two brothers Harold & Silver Sargent guide Chain Reaction the same way they guided “Hot Ice” through another fine Blue Wave Studios production.

From the first note to the last, this energy drenched session promotes “dance” by blending Soulful vocal into a Funk infused production. Hidden on the flipside of a Funky Kool And The Gang inspired session, is a little less “obvious” gem..that has featured across Europe on the rare soul clubs for quite some time.. an initial handful suppled just the right amount of DJ’s for the disc to become very in-demand and sought after as plays blossomed..

Today it’s a record that is not so easy to acquire, brimming with potential for another ceiling to be lifted, we got a feeling this tune still has another life to go..

This copy is in sublime just off Mint condition..

Natural Four

Hanging On To A Lie / Twelve Months Of The Year

This great gatherings rarest 45 and ironically their finest offering to Northern Soul. Their Oakland, California based mentor Willie Hoskin’s guides the “Four” through a searing slab of late 60s harmony dance; crafting fluid, potent, precision Northern Soul from his most accomplished team.

A highly coveted record that has never had the compliment of being reissued, counterfeited or bootlegged, even though it’s standing within Rare-Soul circles would have made it the perfect candidate for a spot of parasitical prophet, but gold coloured label are notoriously difficult to replicate, so it’s pure unsullied status as a summital collector piece remains stronger than ever.

This rare piece as you can see has two squeaky clean labels, and play perfect vinyl to match, just a few fine sleeve contact hairlines reveal themselves when angled under strong light… plays flawless.

A finer copy we’ve not encountered in many, many years ..

Marvellettes

I'll Keep Holding On

Unique Motown Grail, recorded 22nd of April 1965 cut onto a 10” Hitsville studio acetate the next day 23rd April; released nearly two weeks later 11th. May in Motown’s golden year of 1965.

This was the dawning of one of the greatest Motown gifts to Northern Soul, from the desk of Ivy Jo Hunter & William “Mickey” Stevenson came the compelling music sheet for Norman Whitfield to craft into the perfect mid-60’s Soul dance recording. , This acetate captures the AY-VX-L-134312 2:22 seconds session, whilst the Tamla release on 45 was a marginally different take AY-VX-R-134321 at 2:27 seconds long, which in comparison there is no obvious contrast between the two. How could you improve on this girl group masterpiece? Norman Whitfield hey left the body of this recording virtually untouched from studio to pressing plant…

But for Motown disciples it is ever so slightly different…

Scheduled for a LP release that never happened, see “Picked From LP” office scribbling top right hand side of the label… the label makes such interesting reading, with (L.T.H.) - Lawrence T. Horn renowned Motown mixer being asked to finish the session off.

Historic in the extreme, a porthole in the happenings at the heart of making Motown music spring 1965…

In contrast to those rather yawn inducing “Gold Discs” so often captured in the backdrop of some Record Executive’s office interview, this 10” acetate is a conversation triggering framer whilst still being imperative for those DJ’s who want to turn heads.. with an exclusive play.

The disc itself suffers a little from over 50 years in storage, mild “misting” on the surface, a few very light marks.. listen to the soundfile lifted directly of this archival jaw-dropper… then ogle the scan

Arin Demain

Silent Treatment

Created May 1966 in Los Angeles, not discovered by Northern Soul until 1977 in Pittsburgh. It went on to featured as one of the famous “Last Record” of the set, a down-beat mood changer. The DJ “joke” at the time was to play something slow (but good) to leave the next Jock with an empty dancefloor to play to.

Just like the “Paris Blues” scenario, “Silent Treatment” was soon gathering a small following of dancefloor shufflers that within a month had swelled to a cram-jammed full floor. Then the search was on, every DJ wanted to spin it, every collector dreamed of owning it…

I personally never ever did find another copy whilst diggin’. Over the next 40 years, only a very occasional copy would break surface, a scramble for ownership would be triggered.

Today this record for me is the “King” of that “last record” in your set choice, and of course today the Beat Ballad Heaven sound has an enviable congregation of followers. Now perfect for any part of your set, as the dance-pace has slowed, with quality dictating the DJ’s choice.

A top-drawer 45 with a proven rarity pedigree, that is more suited for today’s scene than 1977 Cleethorpes… but so few own a copy it is rarely heard.. to me it sounds fresh, evoking euphoric recall of those halcyon days when legendary DJ “Poke” would deliver a gruff mumble “Thanks, For An Empty Dance-floor Again, Manship…”

He was only able to say that, for just a few weeks though..

This copy has fabulously clean vinyls, flawless A-side label, tiny sticker removal scar left hand side middle of the flipside label (see scan) for its only flaw.

Little Archie

I Need You / I Am A Carpet

Listen ad Weep

This 45 has everything going for it, answering “Yes” to every question your mind triggers, with an affirmative Yes

  1. Rare?… It most certainly is..one of the most challenging UK Atlantic’s to apprehend.

  2. Is it good ? I consider this record beyond “good” .. everything the man from Huntington, West Virginia was involved with is a superior slab of Soul. Check out the a-side for heart-piercing Deep Soul, with Archie Himmon’s extraordinary vocal cradled by considerate horns that whine and moan in timely sympathy with Archie’s declaration of love.

  3. So what about the flipside? … as you’d expect from the inspiration behind The Parliaments - This Is My Rainy Day, Magnificent 7 - Never Will I (make My Baby Cry) this man is no stranger to cutting edge self created Soul. A pleasing Funky edged Northern Soul dancer await you..

  4. What’s The condition? - the condition could not be finer, vinyl I cannot locate even the smallest blemished no matter how hard I look. The label is adorned with the coveted pre-release Poydor promo date stamp -6 SEP 1968.. still retains original wavy-top birth-sleeve (see scan)

This is a listing aimed at those who are truly dedicated to collecting British release 60’s Soul in unsurpassed condition; and of course for those of you who appreciate standout real-deal Soul..

The A-side being one of the most magnificent 60’s Soul ballads ever committed to vinyl..Little Archie was unfortunately unknown both sides of the ocean, sales in the USA never happened and in the UK the 45 did even worse.

Left, like so many wondrous recordings to be discovered years after it’s deletion becoming not only one of UK Atlantic’s Rarest Of The Rare, but also arguably the finest Deep Soul 45 to be released in the UK.

Perfection, is so many ways, awaits the new owner..

Arthur Alexander

You Better Move On

If you collect British release albums you will not need me to tell you just what an iconic platter this 1962 original is..

Vinyl is absolutely unblemished and the coveted MINT grade was tempting to give, but this album has been played by a very meticulous previous owner perhaps only a handful of times.

Labels are likewise flawless, only faint spindle trail or two near the hole, this jewel is housed of course in it’s birth poly-lined inner. (see scans)

The cover front and back are free of any discerning flaws, such as splits, crease, tears, writing etc. (see scan)

Back cover reveals mild age-browning (see scan)

The music we’ve selected a sample of this great man’s work, the man who’s hits cemented the financial base for Muscle Shoals to emerge as one of the most prolific and respected recording studios on the planet.

So listen to the man who influenced so many emerging British bands in the 60’s..

We doubt we’ll ever encounter a finer copy.
