Trial And Error Featuring Rupert Blaize

Thruway

On the rise as Soul Sam / Bob Snow currently spin this rarity, that is slowly unfolding into Monster-status!!

Rupert Blaize & team ignore all the overwhelming “disco” influences flooding New York in 1976 this gathering conjure up a exquisite blend of Soul/Jazz peppered with Latin influences that also surrounded them.

The uplifting jangling arrangement is collared by Rupert Blaize, who’s vocal rasp fits perfectly into the Northern Soul crossover presentation, with skilled musicianship, expressive vocal and a wailing sax, “Thruway” is the best new tune on the block at the moment. It’s a “grower” creeping under your skin, hooking into you, and lifting your spirits.

The parts when the lead vocalist’s voice gently cracks on the high notes, goes against the fluid flow of the session but adds a depth of authenticity to this D.I.Y neighborhood production..and the Sax breaks of pure quality, fitting so perfectly into what is happening at the forward thinking Rare Soul events across Europe at the moment..

Blending a full orchestra arrangement peppered with Mike Terry’s burping Baritone sax, shrill songbirds launch a prolonged “Hearrrrrrt Trrrrrouble” at opportunity, a male bass vocal Doo-wops in the background of a blanket of harmony, whilst the lead voice pleads his lovesick case.. BRILLIANT

Flip it over and you’re torn! As a finger-popping delights floats out the speakers.. a mid-tempo stroll into everything that’s good about Detroit 60’s Soul…. a lost art .. as likely to be replicated as a Chippendale cabinet during woodwork class at school…

L. Allen

Can We Talk It Over

A perennial floor pleaser that has not diminished a jot, in it’s power to delight the dancefloor and frustrate those collectors seeking ownership..

SOLID NORTHERN SOUL!

That lone piano intro ringing out signals the “Park Your Drink” “Rush The Floor” experience only witnessed at Northern Soul events; even before Larry Allen gets a word out of his mouth, the floor is congested as that relentless piano fights for elbow room with an off-key organ and the effect is endemic; as Larry just saunters through the lyrics, a weird high-pitched vocal occasionally pops up with the chorus… So decidedly different, the cocktail stirs into an befuddled mix of addiction..

Utterly BRILLIANT in it’s distinctiveness..

This copy is a beauty, vinyl has not a flaw in sight and plays perfect. Both labels are spankers..

Blues & Soul

No. 22 September 1969

Our data for the last 20 years indicates this is the mos elusive of all the A5 early Blues & Soul magazines - only our 2nd. copy this century…

Rare indeed and this example retains a Mint 8 page “ON DISCSUPPLEMENT” insert for the current new releases albums and 45’s. Such an interesting insight how John Abbey viewed for example, Bobby Bland’s new Action release “Honey Child” or Darrell Bank’s “I’ m The One Who Loves You” the supplement also asks “Where Is Chess Going” as their releases slowed down after being a major force in UK Soul vinyl from 1965 to 1968. Soul City Chart, USA Top 50 R&B singles etc.. And that is only the insert supplement…

Blues & Soul 22 itself is as riveting as all those that went before it. Featuring black & white artist pictures & bio’s on: Billy Preston; Friends Of Distinction; Drifters + discography more black & white pics of The Temptations, Jerry Butler & David Ruffin

plus artist pictures and sadly obituaries for Roy Hamilton; Shorty Long untimely deaths.

plus the unmissable Dave Godin column, talking about cancelling his intended Deep Soul label release with Doris Troy, who had just signed for Apple Records and wanted to avoid any misgivings of his intentions behind the release.. all very interesting stuff from our hero.

If that wasn’t enough for you to have you diving to the mouse…

There’s a spectacular black & white FULL CENTRE PAGE spread of THEDELLS.

22 the best of all the A5 Blues & Soul’s IMHO - this copy is in flawless condition - the supplement is MINT

The Best Is Yet To Come / Just A Little Understanding

It doesn’t not matter which side you drop the needle on this Chicago rarity. Both sides give up strong burping horns the perfect underlay for a impressive James Holvey styled lead vocal, delivering expressive lyrics with a muscular voice.

We lead with the punchier “The Best Is Yet To Come” drum rolls, jerking piano prods punctuate the blaring brass arrangement as the “unknown” vocalist gets to work. A slab of elusive Northern Soul with a cult following that has appreciated the Stafford era dancer for decades. Over that time we can count of one hand the number of times we’ve had the pleasure of presenting it for sale.

One of those simmering away on the back burner 45s that has never been over presented to the dancers as so few Jocks possess a copy, like all good Northern Soul 45s, it’s reputation glowing from it’s validated obscurity.

I hadn’t heard the flipside in an age, and was pleasantly reminded of it’s addictive charm as a mid-pace stroller, benefiting from all the ingredients of the lead side side unfolded.

RARE SELDOM SEEN and shimmering with revival potential for the rare &underplayed events.

A-side 95% of the vinyl is Mint - the a-side has a light scuff at the beginning that is only cosmetic not transferring to the stylus. Flip side vinyl for the NSstroller has unblemished vinyl…

Georgia Hinton With Little Mack

I Play For Keeps / I Need Love

R&B DJ’s checkout this rare double delivery of roaring Chicago R&B Northern Soul, that seldom turns up for sale, especially in this clean play perfect condition

Georgia Hinton is backed by prolific Chicago blues man Little Mack Simmons who’s famed electrified energy comes through on ever note; as his sassy partner Georgia Hinton-Simmons belts out an uncompromising R&B screamer, with her space piercing voice. A top drawer Bluesy stroller emitting girl-power by the ton.

Flip it over, you’ll collide with Little Mack’s potent take on Willie Dixon’s answer to Berry Gordy’s “Money That’s What I Want”. A tweaking of the lyrics from “Money” to “Love” and a familiar tune rings out, featuring some fabulous guitar work, decorated with a shrill girl-group chorus. It actually transcends Motown’s hit, as a better dance recording. A meatier-mover you just can’t help but dance to..

Two great R&B shakers no matter which side you lead with, condition is superior to anything listed this century..just a few mild surface hairlines, not affecting play and two flawless labels..

Killer songs, in impressive condition.

The Journey

The truly dedicated British Soul vinyl collector’s biggest challenge has always been completing the run of the desirable labels; with fine conditions EP’s being frustratingly difficult to a acquire.

Here is a Gold Text 1965 4 track EP in sublime condition complete with an equally unblemished laminated cover, that most reading this review will not own.

Only very occasionally coming to market and hardly ever in flawless condition. Gaze at the inviting scans, and ask when was the last copy you saw in perfect condition.. Labels reveal a previously unplayed perfect state with not a sign of spindle entry. Vinyl is unblemished, cover likewise, this is an extreme copy, that’s been cherished and filed only.

You Do

I’ve always been drawn to sweet girl vocal enriched by male backing choruses. Add a fanfare a trumpets, an enthusiastic drummer and you’ve got the makings of an uplifting “Niter” sound with all in ingredients that punters take home in their heads, an enslaving ear-worm that just won’t go away..

Is it her voice, is it the backing group, is the keys changes, or those soaring trumpets that make this tune so indelible? Or is it the skill of putting all those components together into a fluid flow of joyous 60’s dance..

Whatever it is, it’s still whirling around in my head, begging for another drop of the stylus… the vinyl is Mint - so I don’t mind if I do..

Go on Verma, turn me on just one more time..
