His biography is a fascinating read but you need to read the first publication, it was tamed down  with a fair bit taken out by lawyers.

And, sadly, that's one of the main reasons that Berry Gordy never got Jackie to sign with Motown.

Few people emerge from this with any credit, but most were in over their heads and the Nixon Justice Dept was also very selective in its prosecutions, going after Brunswick, PIR and Clive Davis at Columbia, conveniently taking out a big chunk of black music if successful. Very very murky and worth a proper investigation even today. Nat Tarnopol looks like he was in way over his head with the mob, but before he died he filed a suit against the Justice Dept alleging collusion between the Nixon administration and MCA Records, which had contributed to Nixon's campaigns.

Typical of many record labels from the past,ripping off the artists. Shame them and the  bureaucrats that allowed them to get away with it.

He was buried without a headstone and I remember Blues & Soul making the UK soul,fans aware about a fund raise to buy Mr JW a headstone, which was successful. A truly sad sad story to a man that gave the music world so much, not just the Northern scene. He is my favourite male singer and just adore his output from across all spectrums of black music.

How the hell could Eric reissue Doggin' Around with different writer credits than the original release ?, and given that they did, how would that affect the original registration at ASCAP, MCPS or whoever and any royalties paid ?.

It's my understanding that the original creators can sell their songwriting rights to someone else for a one-time amount of monetary compensation.  When that occurs, not only to the automatic royalty rights go to the new rights owner, but writing credits on re-issues of the recordings are changed to reflect the new rightsholder's interest.  Many creators came upon hard times, needed cash desperately, and sold their songwriting rights for a handful of cash (often very little).  That has explained many of the songwriting credits changes, even on later issues on the same record label.  Some of those instances where we thought the record company later "discovered" the "true" writers of a given song, was actually simply a reflection of the new rights ownership configuration, after a cash transaction rights sale was made.

Thanks for the reply, it all makes sense now, especially with Brunswick making offers people couldn't refuse.

Jackie Wilson was the cream of the crop with his voice as good as anybody, Combined with his Stage performance and live performances he was Double cream of the crop a true legend admired and envied by the best, what happened to him was a real tragedy, I BELEIVE Barry White gave him a lot of support in his last years,
