I bought literally thousands of 45s and hundreds of LPs and 78s I had never heard before, and still hadn't heard them at the time I handed over the money, simply based on the fact that I had liked many previous songs written by the songwriter(s), or arranged by the arranger, or published by that music publishing company, or sung by that singer(group/duo), or released by that record label, or produced by that producer.

That was the entire strategy behind my subconsciously memorizing all that information from hundreds of thousands (probably actually several millions) of records flipped through during 65+ years of record collecting. The privilege of paying only 5 to 25 cents for a 45, 25 to 50 cents for a 78, or 25 cents to $1 for LPs often came with the slight disadvantage of not getting to listen to the record.  But, it was well worth it, as over 93% of the time my memory for those details learned by reading the writing on records paid off in a big way.  Even when i ended up with a record not to my taste, I was almost always able to sell it off or swap it to someone who collected that particular genre.

Was I ever "impulsive" in buying records?  Well, I often spent the last of my spending money on records.  So, I guess one might consider that impulsive.

This Timothy Wilson spin I had never heard before until one of my friends put a live tape recording from one night he was at Wigan Casino up on facebook. I was very lucky and managed to come across a copy a few weeks back. :hatsoff2:

I just don't get this thread. Isn't it what we all do, we hear a record &  decide I must have that & we go & buy it or at least begin the hunt :g:

Spot on, now if the thread was called "Never heard it AT ALL but had to buy it" all collectors could tell us how many middle of the road and jazz records they have in the loft because they took a chance and it was sh#te

The other week saw on Facebook  a friend drunk dancing around, singing along to a record that was playing in the back ground.  The video made me laugh and as a result I had to buy the record, which I hadn't heard before, so immediately set about obtaining a copy....

this is what i'm talking about. That instant reaction, when you feel that you just have to have a copy. I have done the hear a record being played and thought i like that and i wouldn't mind getting a copy, but in this case it was almost instant, with-in 24 hours i had sourced and bought it.

I go back to my post isn't this what we all do ? I've lost count of the amount of times I've been out & heard a great record & it's like what the fuck is this, you find out (hopefully)  & first thing is ask any dealers if they have a copy, if not the next day the hunt is on. I think everyone I've ever known on the scene had that attitude. (Apart from Mikey Gibbs ) Its that excitement, that addiction, that fanaticism that helped develop our great scene into what it is...................... or at least what it used to be.

I've certainly done my fair share of impulse buying, Usually on a Saturday night if I've stayed in drinking beer/red wine and listening to radio, You Tube etc! :D

Sat in the modern room at Cleethorpes weekender heard Archie Bell "Strategy" on PIR (Ivor Jones spin) and Dynamic Superiors "One Nighter" on Motown (can't remember who). May well have heard em before but certainly made an impact! Within 5 minutes of hearing each I'd researched/sourced them on Discogs and bought them.

It's just too easy nowadays to do this, especially with the less rare, cheaper end of the market

Had the Dynamic Superiors for ages (love it), but had never heard the Archie Bell until i just checked it out on (the wonderful Youtube, what a help this has been) like this but not one that i would hunt out, if i see it one up for sale at a later date who knows , i might listen to it again and want it but it is definitely not an impulse buy for me. That is one of the best things about us "soulies" (for want of a better word), we all have our likes and dislikes but we all still get along.

i have had a massive wants list (that i wrote down about 15 years ago, 180 records) i do realize that most are well out of my reach, but hey ho i can still dream. I have managed to pick up 37 of them which work out at just over 2 a year, but then i hear something that is new to me, or something that i had forgotten and that might  jump ahead of my list. but while i am still breathing i will keep on reaching, listening and searching.
