You need to add North Wales vilages and hamlets to this list, but the Casino has to be the top spot, if you ask the average man in the street about a northern soul venue then I would put money on their answer - Wigan, the rest of us will all have different views on it of course but the reality is the Northern Soul and Wigan go hand in hand. :shhh::):thumbsup:

Unless ,of course, they know about THE TWISTED WHEEL,where the name was coined, and where people still come to from all over the country to KTF!

Lot of the places being touted on this thread are saying this town or that town USED to be a big soul place. Kettering still is! Wicksteed Park (I'll be there tommorrow for the Velvelettes) Central Hall, KLV, Cornmarket, Three Cocks inn, are just a few venues off the top of my head I've been to on a regular basis in Kettering in the past 3-4 years. There is, and always has been a strong Northern soul base in Kettering. If you add Desborough and Rothwell into the equasion (both in Kettering Borough) then the case for 10th place is even stronger.

Northants is 7th in the city/area table. Allthough there are no big name venues here, there is always something on on the A6 in Northants or Wellingborough and latterly, Corby. Northampton for the size of the place let's the county down imho[And as for soulies per head of population, I'd put a shout in for Higham Ferrers. Population 6,500 and every single one of them is a soulie! Well nearly. :)

Probably cos half the peeps who claim to be into Northern always say they will come along to a soul night/nighter etc etc and let you down at the last minute,mate...I'm not talking about the main crowd who have been mainstays on the scene for the last 20-30+ years...but just some who had been into the scene, who will stand and tell you where they went and how they would be up for going places all done in front of non soulies..just to show flash...then later on sheepishly say that they can't go after all...:thumbsup: rather they kept their gobs shut and that's being polite...Yes I agree, Kettering/Wellingborough have always had solid Northern soul bases as opposed to Northampton....Delxx

My vote for UK's most soulful town is Newton Aycliffe

In the mid-70s an amazing amount of collectors came from this town.

Today I'd guess more people collect rare soul in that town per head of population than any other small town.

According to our database we have 19 from that town..+ many more from the surrounding areas.

Take a bow, Newton Aycliffe.

I'd agree with this. Newton Aycliffe is no bigger than an average size housing estate in most towns, yet the amount of soulies i've met over the years from there is staggering. It must be a town tradition as all the lads i know from there have been souling since they were school kids.

Per head of population i couldn't think of anywhere that comes close.

Burnley far and away has the most soulies per head of population in the small town category. From the Wheel right through to now the town is full of us.

In my opinion I cant believe there's no mention of any of the following Widnes, Warrington. In the mid to late 70,s there was a soul night 7 nights a week in Widnes at different venue's. Warrington had the Carlton then Parr hall. Then there was St Helens, Where the Saints club ran for i think 11 years through the 80,s and 90,s The Saints was responsible for breaking as many tunes as any of the nighters that where knocking about at the time and Baz M and Flanny just don't get the credit they deserve.

Great topic by the way.

Steve

Hi Steve

Yes we closed on the 11th Anniversary - Must admit when I first saw the list in Kev's book I was a little disappointed that St Helens was not included but I guess there are quite a few who wern't included and as you say Warrington (Parr Hall) and Widnes should have been in there.

Saints WAS special and never really went mainstream so wasn't picked up on the NS radar probably due to the scene not being as big as it was in the late early 70' early 80's and then in the late 90's Y2K. BUT what it did do was re-enthuse many of the people who are still passionate about the music today. I wont name names but there are many DJ's (and punters) on the scene today who will tell you straight away that the Saints Club changed their lives as far as coming back into Northern Soul is concerned. Many of them went on to play a key role in either breaking great records as DJ's or promoting superb venues.

We won't even mention the groud breaking 'On The Real Side' extra sessions which were the forerunner to the Ridgeway Arms and Orwell Crossover nights.

So I look at it like this - 'Better to have been loved by a few than liked by many' and loved it was - I doesn't really matter if it's included in the list because like you Steve the people who went month in month out, at the time where part of something that was special and made a difference. So to all who were there - Respect to you

The thread is about Soul Towns- so please add St Helens to the list not only for Saints but the tribes of people who filled the last bus and train to the Casino and the band of 'Scousers' who over the years have supported Pitches, Parkers, Yate, Stafford, Morecambe, Cassinellis and hundreds of more Northern and soul nights across that UK. Deffo a 'Soul Town' IMHO

what an outrage. if this is a list compiled for UK on the top towns/cities etc of Northern soul (not to be biased here) but Peterborough should be in top 10. i have heard weather it's true or not but back in the 70's we had and was one of biggest places for nighters and Phoenix soul club was well attended.

For a small town, Newton Aycliffe had hundreds of northern soul fans in the early-to-mid 1970s, mostly teenagers and many school kids (including me). For many years they outnumbered soul fans from much bigger nearby towns such as Darlington, Durham, Middlesbrough and even Newcastle. Soul music was definately the town's main youth culture.

And here's the reason why Newton Aycliffe had such a high proportion of soul fans in the mid 1970s...

The town was new, the population was young and everyone knew each other. There were only two schools (which merged into one huge school) and one large modern youth centre which had discos several times per week. The playlist became almost 100% soul and the same applied to the juke box in the town's one and only coffee bar. Most kids were too young to get into the pubs so the youth centre was crammed full of teenagers who were heavily exposed to northern soul. Mass exposure, it's as simple as that. Other towns had many smaller schools and youth clubs etc. so their kids had more choices and wider influences. You just couldn't escape soul music in Newton Aycliffe at the time ...unless you left town.

But, having said all that, I can't explain why other similar new towns (such as nearby Peterlee and Washington) only had a few soul fans. So it must all boil down to the handful of teenagers who influenced the other kids with music and fashion.

Same as Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Apart from the coaches, sometimes there would be 30-40 people getting on at Wton station, but there would only be a maximum of 2 people from Birmingham on the train.

In central Northants, the bigger towns were Soul havens, Wellingborough, Kettering, Rushden/Higham, and the smaller nearby places, Irthlingborough, Raunds etc were grebo places. Irthlingborough and Higham Ferrers are but a mile apart and of a similar size (5,000 pop in the 70's) Higham is full of "soulies" while Irthlingborough has few.

The Newton Aycliffe example is really interesting and I often wonder why a large town like say Peterborough has a long history of Northern Soul while Coventry, twice the size of Peterborough and smack in the middle of the London to Lancashire soul belt has, apparently, very little soul activity. tumbleweed3.gif :search:

There was a brilliant nighter in Brum about 1972 in the back of an all night prostitute's cafe called the Saints and Sinners, out of 80 people there 95% came from Northants and Harboro.

Archive press reports for The Birmingham Evening Mail state that 95% of people arrested at a raid on a famous all-night brothel cafe were from Northants and Harboro-------

I think Kevin might have based the list on collectors & record shops as well as venues ! He always mentions the famous "Syd Booth's" from Mansfield.

Ady, is it also true that Northants had the first police drug squad in the country due to the amount of chemist raids by the local soul fraternity on their way to nighters? ohmy.gif

Rochester in Kent,

Kent Soul Club, bringing back the Northern after 20+ years without it,

just a little plug really but there was once a big Northern scene in the Medway Towns all them years ago,

Jo Wallace for one played a massive part in it didnt you Jo.

Bearsy

It would be nice to think that Keith Rylatt and myself left a little legacy back in '81... without forgetting Graham the promoter who had the bollox to put me on as a resident dj for nearly 2 years
Bogarts in Strood, Kent may not have been the most salubrious joint in town but it was a bastion of soul on a Sunday night - heavy doses of oldies and Detroit monsters....and a few tunes that have since become 'scooterist' classics...

Also, you can't forget our 'gallant matelots'...H.M.S Pembroke in Chatham was a hotbed of devotees...every Sunday night at the Dockyard Bop in the mid 7Ts, I'd go and listen to the tunes that the lads had brought back from that perculiar place called 'The North'...and those funny discotheques they went to....God Bless 'Em - if it hadn't been for sailors, goodness only knows what route I'd have gone down

Thanks for the props, Bearsy

i met a woman this summer who was a dancer (employed) at the flamingo - met her at a bbq on a sunday lunchtime after the 100 and when i told her where i'd been the night before we had a good old chat about allniter culture - extremely interesting to look back at the heritage of what we're doing now

of course the flamingo wasn't a soul club and it finished about 3.00am

did you know that the flamingo allniters started in woolwich before moving up west? (i made that up btw)

Warren Boogaloo

Yep I did Warren.

I think Simsy has missed out the Roundabout and the Cattle Market (Cant remember the venue name) in his list of clubs in the 80s.

Although I have never been there, as long as I have been going to Soul do's I seem to be meeting people from Kettering.

One guy (On the Leicester video), always used to introduce himself and his sister, and made sure he got 'Kettering Northants' into the introduction.

Why not get a map of the UK pinpoint all of them on the map and then see where most clubs are concentrated into one area to gain a better picture of the most soulful county or city?
