Edith Brown – You did it / You think love is something to play with – 4 Brothers 403 Ex/Ex+ OFFERS - A little over 12 hours to go on this one, current high offer is £1900

Willie James Barney had vision and an entrepreneurial spirit, he began selling R&B records from the trunk of his car, eventually growing Barney’s Swing Shop into Barney’s Records Store. He founded Four Brothers Productions in 1965, operating it out of the record store on Chicago’s west side. His partners were a covert Columbia Records promoter Granville White and employee Jack Daniels, who was the principal operator of the label, handling the administration, A&R, production and promotional aspects. Barney’s One-Stop was added to his portfolio, which soon one became of the country’s leading distribution hubs to many family business retail stores, indie labels and DJs. With no studio of their own they relied on other studio’s around the city.

Whilst 4 or Four Brothers and Bright Star & Hit Sound subsidiaries boasted more obvious names on the northern circuit, such as Tyrone “The Wonder Boy” Davis, Ricky Allen, Johnny Moore, it was the coupling of Sam & Kitty, who it transpires were Leroy Dandridge and Edith Brown working under aliases. It is the young lady that causes the eyebrow to raise, because it’s her 2 individual releases on the 4 Brothers label, which undoubtedly attracts the attention of those detective type soul aficionados that search high and low to uncover the rarest of the rare.

Whilst the label numbering system seems to be back to front in terms of sequence to issue date, this late 67 double-sider is typical untamed Chicago, with added extras - only experienced through a female windy city vocalist. “You did it” bursts into life on a guitar and drum roll intro, raw unpolished vocals that rise in confidence and power as the simple but effective backing track grows, coming to a crescendo as Edith peaks with sass. “You think love”, is the A side, and may well be second choice for DJs, but ignore it at your peril, not only will “You did it” command dance floors for many years to come, the flip with its moodier approach will captivate the same audiences for years beyond, double bubble!

The vinyl is Ex / Ex+ to look at with sparse superficial marks that don’t affect play, so it plays a stunning M- on both sides, check out the sound files. The labels show very mild ageing with light discolouration, don’t we all, but otherwise pristine. I guess many won’t ever have heard of the top side, let alone the flip, that’s the enormity of this rare Chicago offering, massive potential.

Open to offers above the minimum of £1500, with a deadline of 8pm on Monday 25 September 2017, unless I get an offer I can't refuse in between.

No trades etc.

PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please.

Postage is included in any final sale.

Cheers, Lee
