Should a DJ have to pay to get in a venue he/she is spinning records at?

Usual rule is DJ and one other helping them out.

However - There are some dj's who feel coming in a car with 4 people each carrying a record box is acceptable to shuffle in and say there with me.  Yea right

DJ plus one, however, if the DJ insists on turning up solely for his / her set, then I would be tempted to charge them entry, as it says to the promoter "I'm not interested in attending your event, just in taking your money".

Pet hate while we're talking about DJs, the guys who turn up just before their spot and leave straight afterwards. Total disrespect to the event and other guys playing.

Dj and partner or box carrier.  Some in my experience do try to take the p*ss. 

But if you are the promoter and you let the dj turn up just before and leave after then it is a pretty poor show on your part.

And we always asked in advance who was the designated partner of the Dj.  Their name was then on the door so if they turned up with someone else they paid.

if you only turn up to do your set you aint going to know what has already been played for a start. Paying attention to the sets before yours and the dancefloor reactions will surely help you to create a better set thats right on the night and compliments what has gone before.

  Having been promoter. DJ  and box carrying guest over the many year's I've been on the scene.  It's always been one DJ and one guest. Be that the box carrying person. Wife or mate.

DJ shouldn't pay if he has been invited by the promoter to play a set regardless of the venue

Seriously though - no.....Although, I used to run a Thursday night event many moons ago, and I had to charge the punters £2.00, and the DJs £1.00 to cover the cost of the hall (Only one DJ moaned)

In hindsight though, maybe I should have charged £2.50, and not charged the DJs. But this was a time when some were at School, or on young people's low wages - It was a very low key event, just somat to do in the week.

Just curious at the initial question Ian - have you as a DJ been asked to pay into events you're playing at or have you as a promoter asked a DJ to pay into events you've put on?

Completely agree with the consensus here - DJs should never pay to get in and are allowed a guest. 

I do know of one event not so long ago where the DJs got in for free but their guest/spouse had to pay. That didn't go down well!

I was asked to pay entry... I also turned up to spin at a nameless venue, three weeks ago , to be informed that ' we don't pay the DJs here'

That's pretty shit with regards to having to pay entrance fee. I know when I promote I always pay the DJs and put them up as well if they're traveling, as I appreciate their time and effort. Most places where I've played have done the same but not all, if I can kip in a spare room or they sort a hotel I'm happy as it reduces my travel costs. But that's a whole different mine field, I saw some outrageous demands by a so called "big name" DJ on FB last week, another one tying to live off his reputation from the 70s.

I always made 'the deal' crystal clear at the time of booking DJs. I'd ask what they charged / or suggested a figure, and I would have their wages ready in an envelope before the event started. Not hoping enough people turned up, if not, then saying sorry we didn't have enough people in - Financing an event has nothing to do with the DJs.

I was at a venue the other week where there were literally more DJs than punters.  I felt a bit left out as I didn't have a record box.

This is quite common at venues in the south mate. Especially if you're not playing bog standard 500 oldies. One venue I went to had three non DJ people, and being one of the three I spoke to the other couple and turns out the husband was a DJ too. So technically only one non DJ amongst the public attendees.

Ian there was a mistake on behalf of you coming to Dj steve was told to let you no And didn’t I can’t apologise no more and thanx for coming as I said on the night just a mistake no one gets paid we are trying to get the venue going and it’s working free admission and give away free cd to all now and then all said I’m sorry for the misunderstanding all the best Jazz carter lane soul club

I agree, theres DJs and then theres people with a box of pressings, cd's and a few originals who usually ask to do a spot as theyre a mate of the  promoter.

DJ,s should be made to  put down a £50 deposit when they arrive if they play a bad set they should lose the deposit and all the proceeds should go to Russ Winstanleys Casino ,s Soul police orphans society in honour of the great job they did stopping  drugs being taken and sold at the Casino

no he should not pay or his partner i stay at every venue i play at only have left early to play at allnighter on same nite  i would be very disappointed in the club if the did charge me or my wife .i think thats just rude & very unsoulfull
