Chapter Five - You Can't Mean It / - CBS 202395

Chapter Five

You Can't Mean It / Anything You Do Is Alright

CBS: CBS 202395 (45s)

Imagine the scene 1966 in Barrow In Furness, Cumbria. The weekend is here and the local hometown group are playing live at the town's "99" Club.

It's a must attend night for local teenage girls and boys, the night to hear their neighborhood band The Chapter Five play Soul. What a blasting night of blue-eyed Soul that would have been. Incorporating honkin' horns ( a tenor sax, a baritone sax, a trumpet ), keyboards, bass & guitar and pulsating-percussion, apparently this six man squad, knew exactly how to shake it down.

At the end of their set, the six man team sat on the edge of the stage proudly handing out copies of their new 45, a cover version of Maxine Brown's "Anything You Do Is Alright". One young lady who only lived 2 streets away from keyboard player Dave McGerty eagerly accepted Dave's gift. Which she took home that night, dropped it into the W.H. Smith family record-box and in the morning forgot all about it..

Little did the young recipient know or indeed Dave McGerty, Dave Roberts, Allan Davies, Bruce Martin, Frank Hayes, Tony Flanagan, Dave Roberts, Lou Mickleback or vocalist John Ritson, realize that the flipside that Dave McGerty had written, would over the coming decades evolve into one of the most sought-after Northern Soul British 45's of all time..."You Can't Mean It"

It wasn't until the sad passing of her mother and the records coming back to her daughter, she remembered that "Freebie" from a night out in 1966. Some time later there was a random conversation with a Northern Soul DJ from Warrington, who suggested the family may have a very special record in their possession..

Very special indeed, now universally considered a "rarest-of-the-rare" British record, that very seldom comes to market and certainly never in this spectacular condition and with the signed provenance for all to read.

Collecting Northern Soul, collecting rare British 45's, opening a registered delivery package does not get any more dramatic than this... a breathtaking experience.

Condition Report

The owner is sure this 45 sat in the family record box unplayed sine 1966, and I believe that assertion is correct, as the center hole reveals not a trace of spindle hole penetration UNPLAYED before we lifted that glorious soundfile. Note however during its virginal lifetime the play surface as expected picked up a few sleeve storage blemishes to the vinyl. a solitary hairline and what I believe is a very mild factory inflicted scuff and it was "bagged" into its sleeve. None of these benign freckles affect play in any way, visually not "pristine" as the provenance described but visually an impressive EX++ but the grooves are MINT I can find no evidence of play before it arrived with us.

So you could well be listening to the least played example of this iconic British Soul collectors item on Planet Earth. Labels are utterly immaculate, Christine thankfully resisted that young girl temptation of writing her name on everything..The sleeve is the exact same one Dave McGerty handed it down from the stage in 51 years ago.

This copy is a breathtaking beauty, that will be sold with the historical provenance ,typed and signed by the owners.

Jimmy Delphs - Dancing A Hole In The world vocal & Instrumental - Carla 1904 Promo

Jimmy Delphs

Dancing A Hole In The World / same: instrumental

Carla: 1904 DJ (45s)

One of my favourite Detroit vocalists with by far and away his rarest 45.

Richard Searling teased the Wigan Casino crowd with this wonderful Ollie McLaughlin creation, as Richard frustrated the collectors by covering it up as "Tony Hester" "Dancin' A Hole In The World" whilst we all dug and hoped to find a copy, this original version remained one of the "Rarest Of The Rare" it seems forever. As the best Richard's rival DJ's could come up with was the Esquires version on Rocky Ridge.

It is now 40 years + since Richard's cover-up was launched it's still one of Detroit's "impossibles" sounding as good today as it ever did. Vocally slick, like all Mr. Delph's work, fantastic honkin' horns, lively guitar driven rhythm, the occasional burping from Mike Terry's Baritone Sax.

THIS IS DETROIT!

The instrumental side really clarifies how much is going on in the background whilst the Jimmy enthusiastically delivers the "Dance" message.

Records so rich in instrumentation, chorus enhancement are now a "Lost Art" never to be repeated wealth of talent coming together to make a recording that fell through the cracks of the avalanche of 45s that were released every week in the Motor City.

This is what Northern Soul is all about finding, exposing and preserving the truly great recordings of 60s Soul..

They ain't making it anymore..

Condition Report

this promo has two flaw-free promo labels, just light biro II squiggle to left on the A-side. Flipside label is clean. The vinyl a-side has many light surface hairline which DO NOT affect play, listen to the double soundfile lifted directly off this disc, as yo can hear it plays Loud, Clean & true. Flipside looks a little worse with a couple of those panicky fumbled turntable retrieves that leave a fingernail trail. NOT affecting play..

Overall visually vg+ plays a clean EX+.. listen to Wigan Casino circa 1977 and enjoy the lost art of Detroit Dance that started to die as Tony Hester, Ollie McLaughlin, Mike Terry passed on.. we rthink this rec ord demonstrates the sound perfectly..

Mixed Generation Enterprize - Take To The Sky / Feel So Good Inside - Blastoff 175

Mixed Generation Enterprize

Take To The Sky / Feel So Good Inside

Blastoff : 175 (45s)

Seriously RARE New England D.I.Y. private press Modern Soul Funk infused dancer, that very few DJ's can boast of owning. Soul Sam spin, perched and ready to fly as it's perfect for the European scene qualities seep from every note. An Earth, Wind and Fire inspired dancer crafted by two "unknowns".

Rare in the extreme and dripping with "Blastoff" potential. Intricate guitar riff make for an easy opening, then the subtle horns pout and blow. The group then take shape with soaring harmony and searing voices punctuating the song.. the long vocal note holding, is very reminiscent of an Earth Wind and Fire production, with EWF style stabbing horns, wah-wah and shrill screaming when required. This is very impressive Rare Soul Dance near 5 minutes of a compelling fusion of Soul, Funk and Jazz..which only a few DJ are able to play.

Flip it over and the "Mixed Generation Enterprize " lead you into contrasting but equally impressive Soul territory, as they deliver the Sweetest of Lowrider harmony, as an icy-cold falsetto is cradled by a silky arrangement of sexy-sax and silken harmonies. The lilting stroll of harmony propelled by the gentlest of piano tinkles and a most considerate saxophonist who enriches the background. A wealth of male vocals seamlessly fuse into one curtain of Soul.. this is Sweet Soul at it's most convincing..

Two truly Brilliant sides, one extremely RARE disc from Connecticut.

Condition Report

Two clean labels, both sides of the vinyl have some light hairline, a mild tiny scuff here and there. But it plays an impressive loud, clean & true. Check out the two full soundfiles attached.

Reggie Soul & The Soul Swingers - My World Of Ecstasy / Mighty Good Loving - Capri 11712

Reggie Soul

My World Of Ecstasy / Mighty Good Loving

Capri : 11712 (45s)

Forgive he pun, but this is sublime Chicago Northern Soul Crossover ecstasy.

A much loved drop at all those discerning Soul events across the country. Soul Essence, Tuff Love, Diggin' Deeper, The Orwell etc have all been elevated by tunes of this superior quality as the "Crossover" sound enriches the evening with a touch of class.

Check out those urgent girls serve up the intro, then cradle Reggie Soul's beseeching voice through his pleading offering of "Ecstasy" as if not enough has already been laid down, a flute solo joins the session...

Utterly fantastic tune, my kinda play, perfect Northern Soul Crossover drenched in seriously Soulful qualities to upgrade you set.

Hidden on the back is a slab of intense back-drop inducing Northern Soul, a careering 100 mph out of control truck of Northern Soul that if you pitch down transforms into a real-deal Northern Soul dancer you have a chance to keep up with.. Listen and make your own judgement on that.. meanwhile I'm still swooning over the A-side that is the ideal missionary to convert the uninitiated to premium Crossover!

Condition Report

So close to a Manship Mint is hurts.. this copy is flawless in every way.

'Marvellos' did well! I always thought this was a £60-100 record! Just shows how behind the times I am

£0.30p in Rob Smith's sales bins was most likely the one he bought from me...

No, you're right. Minty more toward £100 though for the Marvellos. Now what about the Dells almost reaching £200 is kinda sick !!! And Lou Johnson WDJ rarer but blowing above £200... Babylon A Fall, the end is nigh, troubled times...

Kell Osborne seemed to be a good buy as far as I can tell. I prefer The Lonely Boy Song myself (a track that Dave Truscott got behind in the heydays of The Birchfield in Widnes).

International GTOs also appeared to be a good(ish) buy given that JM had a copy for some time on his site as a BIN for £400 as Mint unplayed.

I thought Chapter Five might have sold for even more than it did...but still a pricey record.

It was probably the BIN copy that was up for auction, it had been sitting there for at least a couple of years as it was about when I got my copy from the Louise Neal collection

I think you may be right as it's disappeared from his site as a BIN, but I suspect he had more than one Mint copy as I seem to remember that he auctioned another Mint copy and achieved just shy of £400 around 12 - 18 months ago...unless of course he was selling that for a customer...or my memory is playing tricks on me (which is entirely possible).

Nice result getting a copy from the Louise Neal collection BTW...

cheers, didn't too bad as I also bagged a Sheppards WD with the original Mira mailer from the collection the same day, both were a very very good price

tricky to find but not overly expensive. Maybe that is going to change ?

Again two good sides but is it that tough to find a copy ? Wouldn't have thought an auction item ................................. but what do I know ? :(

I know I bought an issue about 10 years ago around 30 ish quid

Which is rarer Demo or Issue ?

Yes agree when I was looking it was 30 to 50 quid but I didn’t see loads of copies like you do some records at that price.

for the quality I think in this market 100 is fair not that I would pay it.
