completely agree, great band with right ethos, I keep an open mind on new soul music as a few years down the line it suddenly becomes in demand - if it's good, it's good

Jay Vons - very nice tune and thanks for alerting us to them. The Mystery Lights , another New York band signed to Wick Records, are good too although a bit more 60's garage rock than blue eyed soul.

Yes I love that & my own Esther favourite, " Nobody but you." She has a unique but so soulful voice.

Thing is I don't own a copy of the latter otherwise would be on my playlist every week.

Right up my street that. I meant to ask you if you would recommend a particular Chocolate Milk LP? I got "Action Speaks Louder Than Words" 7' and I know "Time Machine" but I'm wondering if any LP of theirs stand out in particular?

Cheers!

Stick with the early stuff - at least for me their debut album is strongest. Some years back I got a copy of their 1981 "Blue Jeans" album, which stood out alright - horrible lamest of the lame by the numbers funk. That's how I felt about it anyway...

Yeah, as Mickey mentioned the early stuff is the best.

I'd definitely recommend the first 3 Chocolate Milk lps for you Jimmy, they're all pretty decent.Theres also a couple of compilation lp's  available too, which are  'Ice Cold Funk' & another just called 'The Best Of Chocolate Milk'.

Glad you liked the playlist btw !

Cheers fellas, I'll probably go for the first first then, I really like those two songs I mentioned.

Soulsides, your "New Bell" pick encouraged me to get my Soul Makossa LP out last night, although I had a listen to the fantastic "Nights In Zeralda" which led me onto a more "exotic" playlist that probably isn't quite suitable for this forum. :D

I'm not ashamed to say I like it either. It's just that I don't

Don't see why jazz shouldn't get a look in here. The overlap with blues and soul is big enough. Motown's Funk Brothers were originally jazz musicians playing in Detroit clubs before they were hired by Berry Gordy. The acrobatics of James Jamerson came out of that jazz background. The story goes that Leon Huff's organ solo on MFSB's Kay-Jee was him simply arriving in the middle of the recording session and joining in at the improvised moment. The musicianship of so much soul is top notch and the freshness of so many recorded tunes comes down to that style of playing and the ability to improvise, such that recordings could be done in one or a few takes.

Hey, Bruv, what a good instrumental "Disco Connection" by Isaac Hayes! I have the vynil album with the same title (credited as "Isaac Hayes Movement") and there's some other good tracks as the mellow "After Five" or "Aruba". Jointly with the double album live with Dionne Warwick ("A Man & A Woman"... what a fantastic cover of "Can't Hide Love"!!!) is my favorite from Isaac Hayes from his ABC / Hot Buttered Soul period.

Thank you Josep, Yes it is a great instrumental I used to play it for a friend who would request it at a Sports Social Club I did dj-ing at in the late 1980's he took his dancing seriously he even turned up wearing dancing shoes, which he still does now when I have seen him at some of the Northern Soul events....:)  :hatsoff2:

I don't forget! I referred to the ABC period. My favorites are "Shaft" and "To be Continued" from Stax years; the two I have mentioned from ABC and from Polydor years "New Horizon" with the great up tempo "Ménage à trois" and the soulful "It's Heaven To Me". In fact I have practically all his discography from "Black Moses" to "For The Shake Of Love" (passing trough "Groove-A-Thon", "Chocolate Chip",...) but the ones I mentioned are the ones I can hear the whole LP non - stop again and again.

A great cover of Shaft is the one included in his "For The Shake Of Love" album (1979, Polydor). And a boogaloo cover by Joe Bataan is also super-groove.

Cheers to all.

No, it's just the typical sort of stuff that gets played every Saturday night round here but I never record mixes anymore these days ..you've given me the idea that maybe I should though...more drinking time, less fiddling about with records hehe !

liking that, funky dancer

Yeah, the Mandingo stuff is great , Funky and cool sounding.

I picked up the 'Primeval Rhythm Of Life' lp around 20 odd years ago in a charity shop for literally pennies and took it home not expecting anything spectacular and was totally blown away by how good it was...all of the Mandingo albums are terrific in my opinion and the fact that Mandingo was actually the brainchild of the Easy Listening band leader, the one and only Geoff Love makes it even more surprising just how good those lp's are to say the least.

The trendy hipsters don't seem to have picked up on these particular albums yet for whatever reason so you can still grab them really cheaply from places like Discogs etc.

Some of it certainly is! Have you got the "Sacrifice" LP? Love "The Cheetah" and funnily enough I played it at the weekend too, I'll note 'em down later.

Yes, I have all of the albums by Mandingo plus some other things by Geoff Love that I've used for sampling in my own tunes..there's a couple of his tracks that have some very nice drum breaks on them .

Drum breaks on records ,now that is a subject very close to my heart, I can happily spend hours chopping ,slicing and looping them to create dusty funked up madness for some intense freestyle sampler jamming sessions !

It drives my missus nuts sometimes but I've explained very nicely to her that this is why Netflix was invented ( she took this rather well I thought under the circumstances) so she can like it or lump it basically hehe.

Is not "exactly" a "DJ session", simply yesterday at the car my wife let me (a thing very rare!) to play a CD of mine (she always plays CD's by Cat Stevens and spanish - catalonian singers as Jeanette, Joan Manuel Serrat, La Oreja de Van Gogh,...), I played a personal domestical compilation from different other CD's. Along one hour of the trip and another hour during the back home...

(Not exactly in this order)

- Archie Bell & The Drells: "A Thousand Wonders"

- Archie Bell & The Drells: "Tighten Up"

- The Olympics: "Big Boy Pete"

- The Blue Notes: "Blue Star"

- The Impressions: "At The County Fair"

- Jerry Butler: "I'm A Telling You"

- Curtis Mayfield: "Sparkle"

- McFadden & Whitehead: "I Got The Love"

- Crusaders: "Allucinate"

- Trammps: "Ninety Nine And Haf"

- Ernie K-Doe: "Mother In Law"

- Frederick Knight: "I'm Lonely For So Long"

- R.B. Greaves: "Take A Letter Maria"

- Sam Dees: "Soul Sister"

- The Pack -Keys: "Diggin'"

- The O'Jays: "Rented Tuxedo"

- The O'Jays: "Break Down And Let It All Out"

- Fontella Bass & Tina Turner: "Poor Little Fool"

- Wilson Pickett & Jackie Moore: "Precious, Precious"

- Joe Tex: "I Wanna Be Free"

- Billy Stewart: "Sittin' In The Park"

- John "Rootman" Henry: "Say It"

- Clarence Carter: "Light My Fire"
