People do collect all sorts of different things though, I know someone on here who used to collect those Confederate singles

Should anybody buy or sell perceived racist material?

James Coit?

The checkmates Ltd?

Black power movement?

Obviously a market for all kinds of stuff like this.

Ed

You can't seriously compare the two. Black Power acts on self love and equality, the other on hate and supremacy.

Should never have listed it in the first place....

I would have thought a man like Mr Manship could and should have had the judgement to know selling this was wrong. Even if it came into his possession I'm sure he had contacts in other specialist collecting fields where he could have disposed of this item without offending the mainstay of his customers. I don't know but if after how long he's been record trader I'd say it was rather odd if he didn't have contacts to trade or pass this onto! However the guy wilfully made a discerned choice to get the best possible price by auctioning it himself. I'd say that's really, really distasteful given the context, as bad a Kosher butcher selling bacon or the Greg's Sausage roll Messiah. All done in the name of greed!

It seems to me he will put anything on his site if he thinks he can make a Buck.

You must be deluded. Black Power, White Power, Religious Power, Ethnic Power, in fact any group who advocate hate of another group are all bad imo.

Luckily most folks just want to live and let live.

Black power is not separatist or racist. It is for the social and political empowerment of black people who have been subject to racial prejudice for centuries. It's not black supremacy or hatred of other races. White power is the call for separation of the races and the ideology that other races are inferior.

Thought malcolm x did advocate racial segregation?

Well to part one's "intention" from the "name/word" one's attribute himself and so it's "meaning" even when put in "context" is the intellectual effort that in my experience only serves to dazzle the minds. It's human history in politics that ! Pervertion and indignation, lie, disgrace, worship, sacralize, idolize, colonize...

In my experience, lived in immigrant neighborhood for "ever", I can tell you racism is not relevant to the whites only nor it is some modern western culture that got depicted onto the other countries cultures... It's anqered in human culture amongst the majority of individuals in most societies since about ever or so...

The Black Panther community social project that it was for the "originators" of the movement and that got shipwreck from the outside and the inside was at first intended toward "solidarity and awareness". And to me that distinguishes them from "White Power" as that has nothing but hate for all that is not white or western.

And so, yes "Black Power" became more and more a scream of individualistic frustration and defiance than a statement of empowerment IMO. If not the tone would be very different I am sure of that. I always found it a bit difficult even to dance to JB's "say it loud" since you can only be proud of an achievement not of what you are...

It's not the benefit of the doubt that is at stake here nor am I accusing JM of any "sacred" salesman ethic trespassing. He retracted and apologized. Good enough for me. Only I've seen so many of these sold on decades ago and I am not in shock seing this now even on his records auction "window" next to other kin. Sorry but true.

Never I wanted to touch, deal or look at any of those N.S., R.A.C. or white noise records. They are an embarrassment and JM got that reminded. At the same time let's not get so politically correct at once and forget under that assumption that "hate" promoting artists are only them those fascist caricatures of themselves. Keep an Ear !

For a short time he did, as did Stokely Carmichael but he also said this:

To be honest Malcolm x's (and the nation of islam) views have never sat well with me. The black power movement is much more multi faceted than the white power movement which has always been in favour of segregation and oppression by violent means.

The black panther movement never supported segregation.

The black power movement may not have been perfect and had internal differences of opinion but the ku klux clan, national front or Nazis they were not. IMO that's why I don't think they are comparable.

Thanks for the insight, Im certainly no social history expert, and I respect your views. For me the poor:white, black and every shade betwixt have been sold down the river politically by left right and centre.

I think we're losing sight of the fact that Screwdriver are hate mongering fascist scum and should not be conflated with movements promoting civil rights and respect for self and others (sometimes rightly in anger) in a country we all know too well has never respected black culture and people.

Dx

Exactly, apartheid has always been associated with South Africa  but for some reason the USA has escaped the accusation

Dx - are you really saying that the whole of Britain (country) has never respected black culture and people - to make it simple please answer Yes or No
