Most inappropriate request to a DJ....

Having just turned 15 and at about my 6th Cleethorpes Winter Gardens All Nighter I plucked up the courage to request Long after tonight is all over - Jimmy Radcliffe about 3am in the morning...........The DJ just looked at me and said 'why not'. Lots of dancers were looking around thinking why is this being played right now!! Haunted me ever since........I was in the 'moment' for sure.

I was in the Highland Room at Blackpool Mecca many years ago, when the dj played the great Ronnie McNeir “Sitting In My Class”.

I was just a young lad, but knew and loved the other side “Isn’t She A Pretty Girl” as well. So I went and asked the Dj and his colleague to play it!

They looked at each other and shook their heads! They must have thought my request from a youngster like me inappropriate, as it was hardly known then!

Bet they were surprised if they ever took the trouble to give it a listen later!

The late Glen Hunter used to run a Soul night somewhere in Macclesfield town centre and he asked me to do an hour. About 30 seconds into my J J Barnes Lonely No More an extremely loud drunken woman staggered over and bawled, Oi, have you got any T rex?...................

I can definitely relate to that. Second or third night of The Magnet, (remember, it was originally one of those terrible 70's "disco pubs") and two very tasty young females came up and asked me to play some Bowie. Certainly, said I, and here's his version of Love You Baby.  Sounded remarkably like Eddie Parker I recall. 😂

That's a very valid point Steve!!!!......ive also said to a dj when he finished "loved it when you played ????? Sounded great, fitted in really well" to be told "that wasn't me it was the dj before me!"... I'm noticing a definite pattern!!!!!!.....Rob

Leicester Oddfellows 4th Anniversary at 5 am !

Not inappropriate for me as a newcomer ! But for the dj - questionable  to their reputation !

My first English all-nighter anniversary  having travelled down from Scotland at 16 yrs of age by train after telling my folks I was sleeping two streets away at home ! Yes we’ve all been there  ! - as you can imagine at that time of the morning the dance floor was flagging

Asked for the Just Bros . Sliced Tomatoes  - Can’t remember who the dj was - But they shook their head as if to say “ SERIOUSLY ! “

I pleaded as my favourite instrumental - kicked to death at that time BUT I had come so far and was leaving soon , so he succumbed !

Packed the floor as soon as he played it ! And I stood in awe watching the guys and girls from the 1st Anniversary video dance and spin that I had watched in my mates house years earlier

Still makes me smile today when I here it sampled on my kids mixes and tv adverts

But for me , 5 am Loughborough Town Hall

I can only dream of people like that at The Fleet - we have a way of dealing with them lol

Whilst dj'ing at Derby at 3 in the morning.  I'd been playing a few 70s & 80s sounds and someone asked me for some chart Motown.. after a bit of a delay while it sunk in, must admit I was totally gobsmacked and it took me by surprise .  I apologised for not having any and told her to ask the Next dj who was my son kev lol  and proceded to play the skullsnaps I'm your pimp.

With apologies, as these weren't requests to DJs, but to record sellers, in the same night at Keele about 25 year ago my Hull mate (who knows his soul but must have been having a bad night) asked Rob Smith how much a copy of Dennis Edwards - JOGGING on the spot would go for and then asked Roger Banks what he may expect to shell out for a copy of GRIZZLY Adams - I can't escape from you!! (the ever polite Roger said 'isn't that the big bearded bloke with a bear??!!) - I kid you not, both of these on the SAME night - of course as a close friend I only mention it..........about every time I see him!

Why, if he was so disgusted by your request, did he have a copy in his box?!! :g:

I will admit to nothing of the sort. Who or what is this "the gear" person/thing you all speak so fondly of? :-) :-) :-)

Do an occasional spot for Steve Studge (not on here), with Banner (on here), in a Mansfield Sunday afternoon bar, that odd mix of interested and interesting scene people, local commercial / Motown enthusiasts, and not a clue how 'much is the beer' types. Many of the above have been experienced: Play some Motown (look at the label going round f*** wit); Have you got any Billy Joel (nope); Can you play something I like (what do you like) I don't know what it's called.

But my favourite: Can I sing with you? (What???) Can I sing with you? (You don't really understand this DJ thing do you?)

I didn't realise I had such a good mic voice!!!!

I once got called a shit DJ because I wouldn't play Blue Monday by New Order.  Seriously out of dozens of requests I've only ever had 2 or 3 sensible ones, it makes me cringe to think how annoying I must have been when I used to bother DJs with requests when I was younger.  I just politely decline these days but if they persist I tell them to fuck off and find a pub with a Juke box and put on whatever they want.

You sure it wasn't for NOT playing the Snake? 🐍

Some years back at one of the Soul in the Dales events at Settle I was chatting to Sean Milward who was deejaying when a lady came up and asked "Have you got any Whitesnake?" Dunno if Sean knew what she was talking about
